Shane Black basically gave the Mandarin the same treatment Chris Nolan gave to Ra's Al Ghul, only this time, for some reason, there is much more backlash from the fans.
IMO it was a good twist, but a great waste of the great design the team came up with for the Mandarin/Slattery. That, and the poor showcasing of the Iron Legion (can't they fight during the day instead?? or at least where there're more lights like in IM 2!), I think is my main disappointments with IM 3.
I am sorry but they are not the same, similar? maybe. But it shows how much of a better director Nolan is than Black. They really can’t be compared. First of all Henry Ducard was never Batman’s greatest villain, he was the guy who trained him and with Nolan’s trilogy he keeps the spirit of the characters in tact. Henry Ducard or Ra’s Al Guhl was never promoted the way Ben Kingley’s Mandarin was, Black and most people working at Marvel talking about how great Kinglsey was as the Mandaarin.
Also, the twist while it was shocking, it was more shocking how much of a joke it was, like most of the movie was to be honest. I don’t understand how this movie was liked. Tony Stark thinks Peppor Pots dies at the end, yet he’s still making jokes. Then she comes comes back and learns some kung fu moves.
I love Don Cheadle as an actor but he is seriously miscast as Rhodey. everything that came out of his mouth was cringeworthy. And Tony Stark hanging with the little cute kid who gets bullied, brought a ton of cliches to the film.
Guy Pearce, another great actor, was made one dimensional and talking and acting like almost every bad rich guy I can remember from 90s films. Even with the terrible twist there is a reason people want this Kingley figure more then The real bad guy of this film, and its because he was not an original villain. There was nothing really great about him.
I am also not a big Iron Man guy, so the twist thing doesn’t bother me, but the way the whole movie was treated as a big joke, is what did. This was supposed to be the biggest threat personally for Tony and it never feels like that. Also the big ending action was cool, but all the action before that was whatever to be honest.
I think Iron Man had the best Iron Man action. With him getting out of the cave in the original suit, practical effect. then Going to that village and punching the guy in the air and using his power for the first time, even the last fight I thought was very good.
I think Iron Man 3 was one of the worst superhero movies for sure. I have Iron Man in my top 5 superhero movies of all time as well. After this movie.
