Yeah, I've been close to ordering the Tama a couple times, curious based on the strength of their 3PO, but the HT R2 really looks great (and do have that one on order).

Only question there is the scale. They all seem about the size of the SS astromechs, which clearly I can live with since I have that one currently.

HT loves their variants, I wonder how long until they issue one? It'd be interesting if when they went into AOTC for example if they offered up Obi-Wan's R2 to accompany him.

still thinking about this...

How does the OT R2 differ from the TFA R2?

Looks like the TFA R2 has black tubes and the OT has copper tubes.

Anything else?

I've posted pics of the 3 1/6 R2-D2s we are getting this year, including the SSC, since I am still undecided.

I thought Tamashii had abandoned their plan to release an R2.

Hot Toys R2 looked like a good upgrade.
SSC's cheap plastic dome was an issue for me.

But when choosing between the Hot Toys or the Tama, it's difficult... as I see it so far:

HOT TOYS
Pros: real die cast dome, thicker look more movie-accurate, better articulation, no hinges, no rivets, no seams. Colors match how we "remember" R2 from most movies, but not from ANH, good weathering.
Cons: no accessories, could be smaller than Tamashii and actually a tad smaller than sideshow, "face" details are not 100% accurate, not ANH accurate.

TAMASHII
Pros: heavy sturdy build, with 183 mm it is the biggest R2 in size, accurate details.
Cons: rivets, hinges or dents visible, dome is not die cast, R2 seems to be very screen accurate to the first scene it appears in ANH, too shiny. Price in Europe can be 100 EUR more than the Hot Toys.

I am debating between the two as well. Like the previous post the middle leg is not that accurate on the Hot Toys. The middle leg seems to be a little undersized but it extends longer. In some poses (last years San Diego Comicon) it is over extended and R2 is leaning furthur back (see your posted pic) then in any screen pic. I also think in some pics the body looks wider than it should be

I think the Tamashii looks a lot more screen accurate all round. If the Tamashii had the Diecast dome and lost the hinges (rivots seem to be screen accurate) with the weathering added, I think it would be the perfect R2.

Chubby R2..

It's going to be so interesting to see the HT, Tama and SSC R2's all side-by-side.

Quibbles aside, we really being spoiled for choice. I'm guessing that there will not be any "perfect" R2 at the end of the day.

The lighted panels (logic displays?) in the dome are green/red/yellow on OT. They are mostly blue/white on TFA.

close. Tama is supposed to be 176 mm on 3 legs, 183 on 2.

Hot Toys is supposed to be 179 but we dont know yet if that's on 2 or on 3 legs.

If that would be on 3 legs that would be pretty impressive. Still the only one I'm considering simply cause of the metal dome. It makes or breaks the figure imo. It's why I held off on the sideshow.

Why though? The HT has the metal dome and sound effects with a remote (always a good one for getting giggles from visitors)

sound gimmicks are not a must on my list.

I dont know, I think the Tama R2 represents more my like of an R2.... and at that price range I may be able to change my mind in the future without a big loss.

I preordered last month with a $20 code. I really like how it looks with the metal dome and weathering. Plus the lights and sounds are a plus for me. Just waiting for C-3PO now.
