That's a whole other discussion. I was just strictly speaking on the guys back then who were mass producing TK armor, as opposed to being able to focus on a few ships or even fewer Fett helmets. Pretty sure there's docs out there with the guys admitting it was just a job for them and they didn't exactly have the utmost care, at the time.

Plus it was a lower budget movie, and the cinema technology wasn't so advanced that they would think we notice all these warps and dings on props. How things have changed now :)

Ah gotcha, I think the term "model makers" threw me off as to which folk you were talking about. Was thinking more of the original prop makers, etc.

I think the one thing with the changes to the Disney versions is that lots of their changes have no connection to symmetry (making the eyes rounder, etc). You could take one side of the ANH bucket (non warped side) and make it symmetrical and it would still look more like what people are used to than the Rogue One version. Anyhow, in movie I think they look fine--the HT figure is another matter, I don't think they captured what was see in the movie very well as they look slight compared to the troopers in the film.

Has anyone posted the Rebelscum pics from Celebration? This looks really good in their pics.

Saw this at Celebration yesterday and took some pictures that I will post when I have some time...looked amazing in person!

Well we always wondered what slight feminine teenage stormtroopers might look like. Now we know.:dunno

Plus machines are alot better at making things nowadays compared to model makers who didn't really care much in ~1977 .

The more I learn about all the the imperfect nuances of the OT Stormtroopers, the more I prefer the perfect symmetry of the "Disney Stormtroopers". I like my TK's to look perfect since all their armor is supposed to come from an assembly line. I find no charm in wonky defects, bumpy molds, etc. found in the OT TK's.

Didn't realize that even the 501st were into retconning. I thought the whole point was to get the outfits/armor to look as close as they do ONSCREEN, not place fingers on temples and teleport into some "real" Star Wars universe inside your head and imagine a machine making them, and change your costume accordingly.

I'm also not sure you'll find a whole lot of 501st members who talk about the people who made the SW costumes as disinterested drones who didn't give **** and that it shows onscreen.

Stormtroopers became iconic and loved as asymmetrical, hand-made helmets. The idea that suddenly they look like **** and need to be changed (after standing the test of time and becoming even more iconic over four decades) is frankly, a little silly.

That's your opinion and I'm ok with it. I can go into any SW thread, in any forum, and already read anything you will already say to defend the OT and any responses that I'll have, so let's just agree to disagree and get over it. This isn't the thread for that.

Let's get back to talking about the Hot Toys Royal Guard figure.

Some people like idealised versions of characters and some people like warts-and-all screen seen versions, and that difference of opinion is what makes things interesting. But one thing's for sure, no one working on ANH in 1976 'didn't really care much' or they would have found it hard to ever get work again in the film industry. Some people found it hard to buy into Lucas's vision, but that doesn't mean they had no pride in their work.

Opinions - yeah, whatever.

But don't state that the 1970's/80's props guys didn't give a **** - or that it shows onscreen.

That's not an opinion we can differ over. It's just **** in an objective sense.

:exactly:

My whole point was, there was complete symmetry in all of Joe Johnson's original art work and non of that transferred on-screen for whatever reason. Clearly, what you saw on-screen is what you guys love and want but I'm glad Disney can make them the way they do now. No need for anyone to get defensive or worked up. Just chill out and breathe.

Joe Johnston didn't design the stormtrooper costume.

Well here are the possibilities.....
.
1. The have basic jumpsuit under the robe.
2. The have intricate armor never seen in the film.
3. They have a plastic body...nothing else.

I am gonna go with number 1 , not because I do not like the armor idea...but because HT is going to want maximum profits....and #1 gives them that without being obviously cheap like #3.

This will be the most profitable figure yet for them......

Let's say this about the 501st: there are still guys trooping in the obsolete F/X armor. That says something about accuracy in 501st. There are people there who really care about accuracy, and others who don't. They are not really prop collectors nor rivet counters (with some exceptions), many are just interested in trooping with something affordable.

Going back on the Royal Guard, I'm wondering if HT will release them as a pair or single and what would be the price, considering this is a pretty simple figure, with robes, helmet, gloves, boots and force pike.

That's why there are Expert Infantryman and Centurion levels. :yess:

You can already see the cloth arms sticking out with the pike--so definitely 1 or 2. Option 3 would be way too cheap for a $200 figure, plus you know they'll be put in all sorts of EU poses so that would emphasize the cheapness.

Or more likely n.4, the actual costume:
501st CRL includes:

Gloves and boots:

I would Love some armor since they are guards. You don't arm your elite Guards with red velvet. :lol
