Re: Hot Toys – SDCC 2012 Ex - Captain America TFA: Captain America Rescue Version
My wife, missed the FexEx guy at my home, but my office is 5 minutes away from their warehouse so on my way home I picked up my 'packed-out' package. (to avoid future 'whatthehelliscomingfromsideshowcollectiblesthistime' I will now pick up my purchases from the FedEX warehouse)
Non pictoral review (my pictures are crap, and let's face it pictures almost never do these figures justice--except the few that really sell these, right OMG,Luka)
Box/packaging: Beautiful thick cardboard outer sleave, much like a sleeve holding a fine volume of a thick book. Inner box has a pull off window with siding, can be easily damaged placing back into the harder outer sleeve. Graphics are a painting design--simple, but elegant; inner clam shell holding the accesories typical of most HT's releases: the figure is housed in the IM mark IV style holder, but far easier to release the figure= killer work Hot Toys 4.5/5
Accesories: Metal Helmet, with removable inner workings, just beautiful (much like the Platoon figures) very well executed, nice weight.
Colt .45 non slide action, removable clip, would have been nice to have the slide action, but acceptable. Knife w. scabbard, just beautiful work HTs, same with the belt webbing accesories, quality work just like the Platoon figures but without the frustration of placing them individually on the webbing. Thompson gun, only has working cocking mechanism, but great look overall, nice paint/weathering, typical HT's standards ie very high. Finally the Shield, the rust effects are great, but the scratches could have been executed a little more realistic. No fastening mechanism on the back, however I don't see a problem with Captain holding the shield and having the straps break, unlike with some reporting on the other Captain shield. I will add the gloved hands, 2 fisted + 4 others with the typical quality one would expect, great paint, and an extra set of wrist pegs. Very nice 4.25/5 (the shield, IMO brought down the score a tad.)
The figure: The outfil, jacket, leggings and boots are stellar work by HTs, some complain that there is not enough weathering on the jacket: depends on what scene you pick from the movie, I would argue that this is figure is a depiction of a middle version of the Rescue scenes, the jacket has not been as damaged at this point in time during the movie: therefor, very well executed.
The underlying body is great, the arms have limited movement due to the jacket, but great nonetheless. The legs have they expected range of movement one would expect with a figure wearing boots. The boots have fabric gaiters and look great. There is an underlying hint of his heroic costume, HTs were smart and only have this extending to his waist (thereby making us completionists purchase the Classic Version later) The effect is great. 4/5 for the mobility of the figure.
...and finally the Evans head-sculpt: yes there I said it EVANS, HTs does an admirable effort in my opinion of depicting EVANS as Captain America. My wife saw this movie once a month ago, and when I removed the figure from the box, exclaimed, 'hey that's that guy from the Captain America movie.' Yes the neck joint is a little off-putting, but with a little futzing and pulling the collar of the jacket up, you can hide the sides and the back. 4.75/5
Intangibles: Well it's a SDCC exclusive, and despite the high price $225 +shipping 25 +import/duty fees 35= $285 this is a must have for Captain America or Hot Toys fans: Overall 4.5/5 a great figure.
