Re: Do you think we will ever get Hot Toys Star Wars 1/6 figures?

Seriously though, HT would do a hell of a job with the SW line.

I'll disagree with this all day long. HT would do a great job with their SW figures, but a line they would not make, and if they did, it'd be an unprecidented first.

The closest thing to a full line HT's done was ALIENS and that's it and even that is missing some key pieces.

HT's a great figure maker, but they're not a line maker.

The best aspect of Sideshow's line is the variety. If HT ran it, they'd look at Piett, Kit Fisto, Ki-Adi, etc. like they do Comm. Gordon in the TDK line, not worth the extra mile to make it, just never do it.

I now realize, I'll be ok probably if SSC doesn't do all the mains because if Hot Toys started a line, they'd do just that so any Sideshow missed would be covered. Better to ride out the SSC line for the variety while they keep the license.

Re: Do you think we will ever get Hot Toys Star Wars 1/6 figures?

To see this, all one has to do is look at how well the HT Hell Boy release went. It was begged for and delivered and... crickets. Several freaks were touting that if HT picked up the license they'd "definitely" buy. While a few did, I'm betting the majority looked at the price and bailed. Same thing will happen with POTA and will likely happen with Star Wars should HT get that license as well.

That said, I do agree that, like the Stormtroopers, a collaboration for the droids and Chewbacca would be 1:6 gold.

We are talking Star Wars here, not HB or Apes. If Medicom can still sell their SW figures that now retail for $180, I don't see why a HT line with a better scale and closer likeness wouldn't last long.

Re: Do you think we will ever get Hot Toys Star Wars 1/6 figures?

Good points, except you're addressing strawmen because no one has come in and said HT couldn't improve on SSC. Its about the money and how it doesn't grow on trees for most of us.

F the price, I'd pay it. I mean we're only talking about 10-15 figures at $150-$200 a pop. At least I'd know that HT would do all the core figures that I really wanted right off the bat,AND do a bang up job. I really don't need some obscure figure like Prajj anyway, just the core is all I need, I'll let Sideshow handle all of those obscure characters.

Re: Do you think we will ever get Hot Toys Star Wars 1/6 figures?

Hmmmm, I'm not so certain Medicom is still doing well. Discussion on Han and Anakin has gone WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY down from discussion about Darth Maul and Boba Fett, etc, if thats any indication on popularity.

Yeah, you really can't compare anything to Star Wars. Apart from Barbie and, maybe, LEGO, that has to be the biggest toy seller there is, and the hard-core fans are HARD-CORE, being willing to pay crazy prices for stuff.

Its true that Hot Toys has never done a "complete line," but I'm betting that the interest from the collectors (at least) would certainly be there for Star Wars.

Comparing the head and paint on CloneObi's head to HT's stuff, it's near identical in quality (save for the doll dot of course). There were even freaks speculating that HT had actually done the head for Sideshow. When I look at my CloneObi or the Stormtroopers, I'm hard pressed to see where HT could improve upon those figures enough to justify a $70 price hike (assuming they didn't charge more).

That is because they do like 2 figures a year and they take the year making them.

Its not like we are comparing SSC Star Wars to HT Apes or Hellboy.

Its straight along comparison. To think that SW is immune to price increases is naive. If anything its a bigger cash cow and therefore MORE dependant on value pricing to maintain that large base.

Interest yeah, but as they say, money talks bull^^^^ walks. I think a number of fans would be interested, but when the prices come up and the release schedules etc. show, could thin things out.

Trouble is, I'm sure many SW collectors are just SW collectors. I myself collect Rambo, Terminator, Batman, Rocky, Aliens, LOTR, and more, so if following an HT line meant dropping all the other properties to keep up, I'd actually drop SW. I like a lot of Star Wars, but not as my lone collectible property. I've owned Star Wars crap since I was 4, a lot of other properties are just now getting their dues (Aliens, Predator, etc.) and I'm enjoying having something else that I love be made into collectibles.

HT is putting out Darth Vader, Hellboy and Soldier Ape each for 149.99, you only have $150, which are you getting?

If Hot Toys is able to sell Dark Knight and Iron Man stuff at the current prices, holding the economy constant, I guarantee that Star Wars of similar quality would sell even better. Its not that every Star Wars collector will buy them, but there are so many Star Wars collectors that there are a larger chunk who can/will buy then there are for other lines.

I get the Vader, but I seriously doubt its a $150 item. I don't see your point though.

I agree....

Ratios, 300,000 Star Wars fans with 50'000 HT figures to sell, good odds of doing fine business.

100,000 TDK fans with 50,000 HT figures to sell, odds of having enough people willing to pay go down.

Re: Do you think we will ever get Hot Toys Star Wars 1/6 figures?

I'd rather pay $150 for something like HT's Iron Man than $90 for SSC's German Soldier Indy any day.

Just because HT's figures are generally more expensive does not mean they don't produce more value than SSC's barebones figs (which are now pushing $100 themselves).

Amen.

Shouldn't SSC's production costs _decline_ during an economic downturn where labour and raw materials cost less? Their pricing (relative to quality) is really starting to tick me off.

Lando is a $40-60 figure (like Buffy or X-File figures of old) as are Piett and the ANH Rebel Troopers.

The Sandtrooper should be less too since it is 90% previously developed parts and they will undoubtedly milk us for an orange pauldron variant at soem point.

Indy in German Uniform is really just a normal military figure (actually probably with less stuff) with a famous sculpt. I had no intention of ordering him but was shocked when I heard how overpriced he was.

HT Iron Man, Dark Knight, RoboCop, etc. worth every penny in contrast.

"Sell better than Iron Man" is not the objective. The point is whether LFL and Hasbro can make more by selling through SSC or HT. I say SSC by a mile because they sell quantity, both by # of releases and units.

In 3 years
HT makes 12 products 2000 units each $140 = $3,360,000
SSC makes 30 products 5000 units each $80 =$12,000,000

What do you choose?

HT is tiddlywinks compared to SSC in terms of profit potential.

Without published edition sizes, we can only speculate that. 5000 SSC SW figures at $90 ammounts to $450,000.

5000 HT Dark Knights at $150 ammounts to $750,000.

That's basically 2/3 the money for one SSC to one HT, so depending on exact figures, HT may do better with less figures. We just can't tell, they never tell you the edition sizes.

Those numbers are pure speculation. For all you know, HT sells twice as many units per figure as Sideshow.

I seriously doubt it. Its speculation, but its an educated guess that I think is much more reasonable than an assumption that HT makes 10,000 units of their figures.

We've seen first hand that as SSC products get more expensive, their production numbers drop. Even though HT makes killer products, I don't think you change the economic model for them. As price rises, demand drops.

Re: Do you think we will ever get Hot Toys Star Wars 1/6 figures?

I don't know, when you do 2, 3 production runs of a figure, I think that's a sign numbers get up there.
