i'm a bit sick of people TELLING me i'm wrong for liking this movie, and that it sucked. i hadn't seen any trailers, read any reviews and didn't have a clue what it was about before i went to see it, and it surprised me in a very good way.

i think people had too many preconceptions about sucker punch, based on the trailers and the director. i'm not a zack synder fan at all - i think he's a slow-mo ho and his other films are largely style over substance. i still enjoy them, but i just know he's not making masterpieces. sucker punch made me respect him a lot more because he tried something different in terms of plot. it's psychological, emotional, disturbing and very sad. and for once i really liked his style, coz personally i felt the substance was there too. it's obviously one of those where it either affected you or it didn't. unfortunately, i think the ones that were affected by it were in the minority.

plus the soundtrack kicks ass. there are all sorts of clues in the song choices too for those people who didn't get the fact that there were 2 levels of escapism going on (and man i've read some really dumb reviews of the movie on amazon, where people thought zack snyder just "forgot" baby doll was in a mental asylum and wondered why he changed it to a brothel midway through).

basically... i liked this film more than a lot i've seen this year. and i want me a baby doll figure. so make it so HT. they might cut the line REALLY short, but the figure is coming. all the clues are there.

:exactly: I agree!

Why do people have to keep dissecting this? Hot Toys WILL release Sucker Punch figures, hot girls, guns, swords, what is there to think about? You don't have to really sell those kind of ideas to collectors. The only thing that the box office will do is decide whether or not we get all five. There is a reason that Baby Doll AND Amber were both shown, they could have shown a poster with all five or a poster with just Baby Doll or even just the wording but they didn't.

Expect at minimum Amber and Baby Doll. Unless this is an enormous hit in Asia I wouldn't count on much more. I have a feeling we'll get a glimpse of at least one by TTF which is in a few weeks.

I am not ashamed to say I liked the movie as well. It wasn't great or a masterpiece, but for what it is, a bit of escapism and some cool concepts. I liked it enough to want a Baby Doll figure and I am hoping Hot Toys will do one.

if i was HT, and i wanted to cancel the line, i certainly wouldn't have had sucker punch in the next reveal poll they had on the site a while ago. i'd just let it die off quietly, pretend it never happened and get rid of all witnesses. baby doll is definitely coming.

but i disagree that she'll sell just coz she's a chick with guns and swords. personally i never buy figures from movies i thought were crap and i think a lot of other people are the same. some people might, but i bet that samuel l. fig from the spirit didn't sell too well even though it was a cool looking figure.

Admittedly, Black Widow and Abigail Whistler are not the closest points of comparison to the potential Sucker Punch line. Black Widow being part of the Iron Man line and Abigail Whistler having sculpted hair. Both actors behind the roles are sex symbols helps as well. Also, to add to my point, even the Sarah Connor figure with rooted hair turned people off, if the donut head T-1000 didn't come with that figure, they probably would've only sold half..

But HT released two Sarah Connor figures. The Sarah version I'm sure sold well and the second T-1000 disguised as Sarah prolly sold decent too. Sure HT sweetened the deal with the donut head, but hey it worked.

Sucker Punch had a bunch of nobody actors and made pretty much made nothing at the box office. If it would have done better, I'm sure we would have seen something by now.

But I agree with what you are saying mostly. Female toys have always warmed the pegs in male toy lines.

Not beat a horse into the ground, but that's pretty much been Triad's business model for the last year or two, making hot girls with guns and swords, and nobody cares.

I don't doubt for a second that Hot Toys has Baby Doll and Amber ready to go. I'm saying that there is just not a strong market for that type of figure. But hell, maybe Hot Toys can help build that market, they've certainly given the general 1/6 industry a huge shot in the arm.

Sarah Connor and Ellen Ripley are probably the two exceptions to the rule. If Sigourney Weaver allowed the use of her likeness you can bet Sideshow and Hot Toys would be making Ripley after Ripley after Ripley, and they wouldn't have a problem selling. My point about the second Sarah Connor was the rooted hair, if that T-1000 Donut head wasn't included, there would've been a lot more naysaying, like "Why does Sarah Connor get a BD version and T-800 doesn't??"

you have to remember this was a con exclusive as well, not a general release. exclusivity i think suggests the issuing company's acknowledgement that it's not popular enough for general release. hence people didn't really care that there was a 2nd sarah connor/T1000.

I'm more worried that when they finally release Amber or Baby Doll that they will be released like Silken Floss was. Silken Floss was not distributed through Sideshow or DC Direct so if you wanted her - you had to order her from China for the premium price. (I got her with Bing cash back so it wasn't that bad - but they no longer offer that)

None of the comic shops (alter ego, vikings playground, etc) had her either cause she wasn't carried through Sideshow/DC Direct. I think Toys2 was the only place in North America who carried her??

I think there's a definite market for female figures. I for one would LOVE more female figures in my collection, but I have very, very few. The problems, as I see it, are two. One, most female characters aren't really worthy of being made into figure form. Most often, they aren't the popular hero, they are the hero's love interest. Add to that, their character or design may be somewhat plain, cliche, or boring as a secondary character/love interest, or even as an original character. So, very few collectors will want them.

Two, the quality of the products themselves just aren't up to our standards. Hot Toys is about the only company out there making female figures that look somewhat lifelike and beautiful. TTL isn't too far behind. The problem again is that the characters aren't always interesting enough to warrant a purchase with their price tag. Of course, this problem doesn't exist for those of us who just want decent nudes to make our own figures (and can actually obtain the nudes!). But this just goes back to my argument of lacking paint application (not to mention poorly designed bodies). If Triad painted up their sculpts as well as Hot Toys does, with each new nude/complete figure release you could expect to see Craig's List ads of a certain broke Japanese man offering up "pool services" to women of Congress at 2 o'clock in the morning. But to me, the quality just isn't there. Not for what they are demanding we pay. Plus, again not many of their releases seem all that inspired. So even with complete figures, I would, more often than not, seek out just their nudes (and than not have anything to dress them with, as I mentioned, the market doesn't have much inspired clothing and accessories on offer). The same can be said of TBL/Phicen among other comapnies and their offerings.

For me, frequenting the MWD forum among threads like this, there does seem to be a market, but companies just haven't figured out how to tap into it yet.

I thought the movie stunk to high heaven, but if HT makes figures from the movie - they would sell well.

ok... i had to ask... what does this mean?

No doubt. Using Triad as an example of how girls with guns don't sell is weak. Triad's stuff is painfully generic.

Is there ANYONE out there making non-licensed unique figures that people are talking about??

FoxBox made that Hermes figure, which looks pretty slick and that got all of about 10 replies and is way back on page 8.

IF you're a concept artist or you can create unique character designs, why would you be working in toys when you can be selling those designs to movie studios and make three times as much money?? Or working in video games where your work will be seen by 5 times as many people?? There is a very small talent pool in 1/6. Hot Toys wasn't Hot Toys until JC Hong came aboard to start painting their heads. Sideshow's likenesses were pretty poor until Trevor Grove came aboard to start sculpting their heads. I've believed for a long while now, those two individuals have given this hobby a HUGE shot in the arm.

With 1/6 females you have so many factors running against you,
- females sell less than males
- non-licensed = no one cares
- paint apps HAVE to be spot-on, females are all about beauty, if they're not hot, they're ugly. You can make an ugly dude and just say "He's ugly, that's how he's supposed to be" Spot-on paint apps = $$$$

3A?

i think the problem with the hermes figure was it was too limited. and it's this company's 1st real release. there isn't that much to talk about.

this is probably the wrong board for non-licensed stuff - generally people only seem to care about extremely accurate depictions of their favourite movie/TV characters (like scary accurate... don't even get us started). other forums have a lot more discussion on non-licensed stuff. i don't think it's fair to say it's not being talked about just coz it isn't here.

I've definitely noticed that, but what other active forums are there??

The way I see it is

SSF=licensed
OSW=military
MWD=femfigs

And even then just look at active members of those forums

SSF= 700
OSW= 600
MWD = 6

That shows you what people are interested in.

:dunno

3A females are hype. I love the designs and fantastic paintwork of the robots and de plumes whatver they are, but their female figures don't look one bit good to me.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not putting them down, but I wouldn't qualify 3A as "unique" it's the same robot painted differently over and over again. It's a unique design with great paint, but if you took a 1/6 figure and just repainted the head 5 different ways and changed the color of the shirt, people would be crying foul.

I think 3A falls more into the designer vinyl category. They're definitely blurring the lines.

I saw the movie and thought it was average - if I had disposable income, I might have picked up Babydoll because I did like Emily Browning in the role, but as it is, I would pass on her too.
