How much packaging do you keep?

If it's from Sideshow, I keep the shipper and boxes too. I've mainly done it for the larger pieces, but have kept shippers for some of my 1:6 pieces too.

I stand by my statement....

But let me pitch it to you this way...would you buy an EX statue and throw out the part that "makes" it EX because you dont display it with the piece?
The boxes are part of the investment....Im willing to bet if I ever had to sell my CM pred on ebay I would get $500-$800 more for it because I have them......VS......not having them.
How can you say you dont need the boxes?....of course you need them. Your simply storing money in the form of boxes elsewhere. Make no mistake their is a dollar value attached to having original boxes.

Chris

Statues are a bit of a different story though. I agree that the packaging is important. If nothing else, it is need for safe transportation. 12" figures (and smaller toys) I don't think there is a point to hang on to the packaging since they aren't the fragile.

Atheris666 is correct - the box represents a good 50% of a piece's value on the secondary market. And that applies to pretty much anything on the collectibles market, from statues to action figures.

I agree that there's very little sense in keeping a box if you intend to NEVER EVER sell/move/ship a particular piece, but who's to say what the future will bring? I certainly can't envisage selling off my collection of PFs, but if it came to a point where I absolutely needed some quick cash, I know I could not only cover my cost on those items, but make a tidy profit in the process as well. Why shoot yourself in the foot?

And on the flip side, there is a dollar value attached to having space. Each square foot and in my opinion, especially with the cost of housing these days, wasting it on 1/6 scale packaging is ridiculous. Prop replicas and statues are usually another matter though.

Like I said before, depends on the person. To me yes space is valuable and I take up a lot of it with my boxes BUT I wouldn't buy a 1/6th figure unless it came with the original box. Unless I was doing a custom and just needed it for parts. I am in the process of picking up some of The Dead figures I am missing and I won't buy them unless they come with the box....or I can track down a box.

So those who fold down the shippers on statue pieces, what do you do with the styro foam? :lecture

Dave

This didn't make sense to me because like you asked, WTF do you do with the foam? And if you throw it out, what is the point of the art box then? Look pretty? But when are you ever going to display a box?

Or even worse how would you pack up the statues, I'm thinking a 50lbs Hulk would be horrendous to just stick in the passenger seat and take off to the new house.

Seriously, only way I would feel safe is if someone else drove and I held it.

But game over if you get into an accident.

Well I have the art boxes only folded down. I have no room for shippers or foam. I figured if I ever move I'll either look into getting some foam cut but the stronger ones they use in camera/video equipment boxes or bubble wrap and foam around the PF and then those foam bubble things around it to stop it from moving.

Interesting point. I wonder if the opinions on packaging are influenced by the cost of living vs. space available. It was just announced that Vancouver is the most unaffordable place to live in the world, and I'm floored to see people can buy a house in some States for $180, 000. I paid twice that for my apartment...

Space has far more value to me that a box does.

Good point.. maybe I'll toss my art boxes too then.

Heck, houses are even cheaper here... I had a friend that just bought a 3 bedroom (not huge, but around 1300 sq ft) for around $100,000. But downside is you're living in Oklahoma :lol

Our place has a 2 car garage and accessible attic space so storage isn't a big issue. I mostly just hate moving the damn things, but we bought our place last year so that probably won't be an issue for at least 5-10 years.

All of it, I need it to get my flip on. :devil

Plus I have an entire closet for boxes and a nice roomy garage.

:peaceI know this is huge bump. Sorry.:monkey3

I am getting to the point where these boxes are getting to be a pain (much like many of you freaks). I thought for a second or two about throwing away the styrofoam:horror (dont worry, I'm not going to)

I currently have everything in my basement. I don't trust my attic because I live in a townhouse development where the association is in charge of my roof. It's supposedly been fixed, but I've had various ongoing leaks for the past few years.

One idea I had was to put the styrofoam boxes in the attic covered by a plastic sheet (just in case). I'm not too worried about the condition of the styrofoam anyway. I'm just interested in having it in case I move or have to sell anything. This way I can flatten the pretty sideshow boxes in the basement.

Decent plan? Any potential problems with that? Let me know.

I don't mind the bump, as storage is going to be a big problem for me soon. I'm probably going to have to rent a storage locker as I'm in the process of probably having to move to a much smaller place and I have too much stuff I'm not willing to throw away or otherwise get rid of.
