I'm straining to remember when lighting made that big of a difference in the overall appearance of a figure.

For example, i can move my T2 Arnie all over the room and while he does look better in certain places, it isn't THAT big of a difference. (even in photographs.)

This here..almost reminds me of MJ Thriller difference between proto and final product...just sayin

I hope to bloody hell I am wrong...

Alot of people want this so bad they don't even want to think that the production pic is not up to par as the one off proto painted by a professional.

Better example is MKIV TS head. Proto was ok but in person it was brilliant, even when some people posted inhand pics of it with bright lights.

That's a perfect example of what proper lighting can do and what improper lighting can do. Nothing more, nothing less.

It's not just the lighting - for example you can clearly see the hairline is painted with a lot more shading and details in the JC Hong proto as opposed to the in hand factory painted version

^Right. It usually looks close to the proto and in many cases lately, better than the proto when in hand pic's start showing up. Lighting aside.

For comparison:

The above HTC looks more like what one will see when they look at the head, only it will be slightly better in person. Modern tech can make something look better than it is, that's why modelling is basically all photoshopped these day's with un-natural beauty.

Uh no, that is not natural lighting... unless you live in a very stark room. Natural lighting is warm, these photos have been pretty unflattering and cold.

Figures tend to look better in-hand because the lighting around you is real. You can never perfectly capture with you see in life with a photo.

Aside from the hairline (which I think the verdict is still out on), what non-lighting dependent differences exactly are you guys seeing between the prototype and the final product? And please, be specific.

This is just based off the group of HTC pics a few pages back but the forhead on the preview pics show a definite redness of natural skin, more freckles and blemishes on the cheeks, the line below the eyes is less gaunt than the in-hand, the hairline was a reddish colour in the preview pics

Thats the differences i see, but it is from that one set of pictures on one head, in a couple of hours there could be new pics that make it look much closer to the proto.

This is just mere assumption, but it seems that HT has all their figures on display at their HQ from pics I've seen so I would think that the protos are the ones they have on display

If you look at the sculpted aspects of the head in both shots, you can totally see it's all there (though it's highly blurred in the latter pic). The difference is, the prototype was lit with warm lights and the pics professionally taken, whereas the production piece looks like it was taken under fluorescent lights with the contrast almost completely pulled down. You can't even see the "freckling" in the skin in the latter pic and we all know it's on just about every HT head nowadays. These custom pole squatters need to just stop chickenlittling this thing, freaking out other board members.

I thought they used different paint on the protos? ones that can get scratched and smugged up easier.

The htc ones are the photos with the cold white balance? The one you used in your comparison on the previous page? Those are fairly poor choices to compare with the official HT shot. Lighting aside, the photos aren't of the quality necessary to highlight small details in the paint application. I'm sure the small freckles and marks are still there and the shading on the forehead and cheeks are still present though not quite as obvious as it was on the HT shots.


Searching back through the past 20+ pages, I think this photo does the best job thus far of showing off the sculpt and paint. You can see that most, if not all the details from the proto are still present. Notice the slight shading on the cheeks and forehead.
