* The Bush administration, which failed to provide needed government oversight of the increasingly dicey mortgage-backed securities market.

Bush requested oversight of Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac and action to be taken by a Democratically controlled congress (Barnie Franks and some others), all of whom are on record as saying there is no problem with the housing/banking/loan industry.

This happened on at least two occasions,w here he warned of a collapse, and was ignored. You can google it if you'd like, the truth is out there, just not being reported accurately.

And now he gets the blame for it.

Bush did ALL sorts of things wrong during his adminsitration regarding conservative financial decisions, but the FM FM implosion should not be included in his legacy. That was all the democrats child, giving away "free" money like it grew on trees, sortof like now.

By the way, Obama has now passed legislation that provides the same two comanpies that helped us get into this mess (FM & FM), with an unlimited amount of government provided financial support. Seems like the wrong thing to do IMO.

And here we go ...

Failure is heaped on all parties (Govt down the line) who purchased bigger than their wallets allowed, of course this is liable to include most of us who buy relatively expensive collectibles. :banana :lol :monkey4

What the hell, let's just print more money.

LOTR Fan for president!

It could be worse -- we could be ANY OTHER COUNTRY IN THE WORLD. Those who whine about "corporate America" should count their blessings that they aren't in "impoverished Cuba", "tyrannical Iran", or "nancy-pants France" (for instance).

The system is imperfect -- but its the best around. I literally would not trade it for anything in the world today.

I see right through Lotr Fan's teemu impersonation. You aint fooling anyone bud. You can't just print money. Money is printed to a very strict regime.

And let's not get off track by involving governments in this topic, other than they don't police corporate responsibility for their involvement in the misery they bestow upon employees by paying them peanuts but expecting precision surgery in return.

Why are Lithium stocks going up? Zombieland is on our doorsteps. Corporate America has spoken. Be ready! Thank you for the warning Sideshow.

I hate it when people do that...compare situations.

F That! I don't care about those countries...I care about this country!

And I still hate C.A...I'm going off the grid! Live in the woods!

This is true. There is even a you-tube video of them saying everything was ok. Bill Clinton started the deregulation of the banking industry

It actually was not an issue of government 'letting' banks get away with what they were doing. Banks' ratings were dependent upon the number of high-risk loans they offered, i.e. they were encouraged by the U.S. government to make these loans.

The derivatives that they created and sold after the fact by bundling the high-risk loans with lower risk loans were to mitigate their own liability, and actually make some money off of the whole farce. What broke the whole thing wide open was the trillion dollars worth of sub-prime that the FM's lent in 2007. Countrywide Financial was another taking advantage of the government's treatment of the banks. It's pretty funny because the guy who owned it was a passionate believer in the idea that everyone has a right to a home and that it was the obligation of those with available capital to make it happen.

You are all free to blame the banks for obeying the government. But who could blame the government? They were just trying to help people who the evil banks wouldn't give loans to (those evil banks who didn't bother to figure out how many mortgages these companies were whoring out on their dime).

:duh

I actually thought for a second that this whole incident would make people question their kneejerk hatred of big business, but the same lies that distorted all of this were the lies that set it up, so I understand that it's expecting a lot. I mean, it's such a festered cliche that you'd think more people would notice the stench.

:dunno

Guess not.

That's it, I'm down with this thread (though I'll be browsing for sure), but I think finally America is WAKING UP and realizing there is no such thing as magic beans and the "hope and change" that was campaigned on was a complete and total LIE (not even to mention "bipartisan-ship," "televise on C-Span about Helath Care", "cut pork and earmark wasteful spending in bills and make those names available", tripling the national deficit, etc. etc. etc.), and deceived the majority of the American population, and the only way out of this mess is through a hard work ethic, American ingenuity, self reliance, and not through government hand outs. Everything I've heard in the past year from Washington has been a God damn lie, and I'm pissed about it. No such thing as a free lunch, and anyone who promises it is a frack ing liar.

I know, I know, Bush sucks, but is this method really any better?
