Apparently, the original crane kicker isn't happy.

The original Karate Kid has lashed out at plans for a big budget remake of the hit franchise - urging Hollywood producers to leave classic films alone.

Ralph Macchio shot to international fame as a teenager when he landed the part of Daniel Larusso in the first Karate Kid movie.

He went on to star in two sequels before the mantle was passed to a young Hilary Swank in 1994's The Next Karate Kid.

Now the role is to be taken on by Will Smith's 10-year-old son, Jayden, in a new version of the original movie, which will be co-produced by the youngster's famous father.

And Macchio is adamant that the new film won't be a hit with the public - because too many movies are ruined by remakes.

He tells MTV.com, "It feels pretty good that some people are pretty angry that they're trying to remake The Karate Kid. It feels good that the public feels you don't touch certain things. Some times you go back to that, and probably shouldn't.

.From my personal view, the filling the void of what Mr. Miyagi was - and the magic of that character - is going to be the toughest task. I (also) don.t know where the romantic story-arc goes (with Smith.s Daniel) at that age..

Chan is a better pick than freakin' Sulu.

I don't even want to imagine Takei saying "up... down..." to Daniel-son... :horror

Likely if he'd been cast, you all of a sudden have Ralph's "romantic story-arc" answered and "up... down..." would be replaced by "in... out..." :p

Seeing as how it's now based in China and the instructor will likely be a Sifu instead of a Sensei, wouldn't it make more sense to just call it The Kung Fu Kid? Although TBH, a few things always bugged me about the original. The first being that a blackbelt couldn't see where the "kick" in the Crane Kick was coming from, the second being that Daniel could actually support all that force on an injured knee and the third being the kick itself. For the life of me, I've never seen a "Crane Kick" in Okinawan Karate. :huh

I'm glad Ralph is speaking out...
I don't mind if they use a similar story-line, just DON'T link it to the Karate kid, because it's a completely different thing...

Suspension of disbelief??...
It was the 80's after-all!

I just read today that they're remaking Footloose with the guy from High School Musical. Another one I'll skip.

I don't care. Part IV already gave us a bad remake with a different kid. Another one won't impact my enjoyment of Parts I and II.

there was a part iv?

wait... "the next karate kid" but was a girl?

Daniel - Sylvester Stallone
John Kreese - Chuck Norris
Mr. Miyagi - TBD
Johnny - Jean-Claude Van Damme
Ali - [pick a chick]

game over, cranekick boy!

Karate Kid III remake - Terry Silver - Steven Seagal

wait. imdb has Jackie Chan listed.
wtf

I'm not happy with a remake of this movie, can't they just rename the film and ripoff the storyline like so many other movies in hollywood.

Does anyone think Jaden Smith is a talented actor? Am I the only one annoyed by this kid's personality?
