I knew about this, but I thought they were just making an all new one....is it supposed to be a remake of the original? If it is, then I'm with everyone else, I think it's a disgrace. But if it's just a new one with a new kid, and someone who's the mentor by not playing Mr. Miyagi, then I don't really care. The originals will always be where it's at for me.

I just read today that they're remaking Footloose with the guy from High School Musical. Another one I'll skip.

All of the great 80's movies are getting destroyed. it's like food thats been regurgitated. Our movies were great then but now their come back...well not the way they were. :( Whats next- The Breakfast Club? They better not.

some remakes from the 70`s 80`s works and Karate Kid is not one of them.

Some directors out there is just running out of ideas...

There's a movie coming out called "Bumped"' that's supposed to be sorta a remake but I'm not sure that it really is.

‘The Karate Kid’ Remake Retitled ‘The Kung Fu Kid’

The trend of messing with our childhoods just seems to keep steam rolling on, no matter how much complaining fans do. One of the latest is a remake of the 1984 classic, The Karate Kid. The news recently broke that Will Smith’s son, Jaden, will be starring in the lead role, with Jackie Chan starring as the updated version of Mr Miyagi. It’s also come to light that this film won’t be a remake of the original: the screenplay will “borrow elements” from the original film but is not a remake.

And, to make that difference clear, the filmmakers have gone so far as to rename the film. So what are they renaming it? Well, according to Chan: “They don’t want to call it Karate Kid any more… They want to call it The Kung Fu Kid.”

So they’re remaking The Karate Kid, fine. And they’re casting Will Smith’s son as the titular character, okay. And they’ve even got Jackie Chan as the new Mr. Miyagi, great! But The Kung Fu Kid? Are they serious?! The filmmakers must’ve been reading all of the movie websites (such as our very own Screen Rant) to cover their backs with that one, eh?…

Film Drunk mentioned The Kung Fu Kid as a possible title for the project over a year ago, but now it’s looking like that’s what it’s going to be. With it the filmmakers have kind of neutered themselves, contradicting themselves in the most stupid of ways: they’re remaking a famous film, presumably hoping to capatalize on the name recognition of those who loved the original as kids, and then they go and give it a different title, effectively removing said name recognition.

Our friends over at First Showing point out the fact that the martial art of Karate actually has some of its historical roots in Kung Fu, so the reason they may be changing the name instead is to be more “culturally relevant and accurate.”

Hmmm, okay, I guess I can buy that - but you gotta’ admit, the title of The Kung Fu Kid sounds pretty silly, to say the least.

The Karate Kid is one of those movies that gets overshadowed by its many sequels (which steadily diminished in quality from the original). And much like the Rocky series, people seem to forget that the original Karate Kid film wasn’t just one of those fun, entertaining, “you like it because you remember it from childhood” type of movies; it’s actually a respectable film of decent quality that even got nominated for an Oscar (for Pat Morita’s legendary performance as Mr. Miyagi).

It’s yet another one of those classic movies that just doesn’t need another sequel, let alone a remake “re-imagining.” Didn’t Hollywood learn from the tried and failed The Next Karate Kid?

well, maybe it's not so bad afterall, come to think of it...
IT'S NOT Karate Kid...

There's a movie coming out called "Bumped"' that's supposed to be sorta a remake but I'm not sure that it really is.

It's the Breakfast Club, but takes place in an airport. A flight get canceled or delayed versus being in Saturday suspension. LAME!!!!!!!

Not me dude!! This is going to be a huge pass!!!
Can't stand Will Smith's Brat...

I agree!! :lecture:lecture

That's why I won't see it because of the Smith kid. Though I doubt I'd see it no matter who stars in it. I like Jackie Chan, but....pass.

i cant believe it.... another remake? Whats wrong with hollywood??
can nobody write or come up with any good original scripts these days?
does hollywood really have to resort to re-making classics and ruining them?
I agree, there cannot be another mr miyagi, just like there cannot be another fletch, or new ghostbusters, or a different freddy, bah!
BIG PASS for me if this ever comes to be...........:banghead

'Karate Kid' Remake Sounds Like a Distinctly New, Valid Vision

Moviehole has learned some plot details of Jackie Chan and Will Smith Son's Karate Kid remake, a movie I know everyone is pretty juiced about. Allow me to summarize their findings:

-Instead of moving from Jersey to Reseda, The Karate Kid moves from the United States to China.
-The Karate Kid's name is now Dre.
-Everything else is the same.

That sounds about right. Just let me know when Will Smith releases his hip-hop reinterpretation of Joe Esposito's "You're the Best," a catchy track titled "Da Best." That's when we need to put Ralph Macchio on 24-hour suicide watch.

I just seen "The Day the Earth Stood Still" I wanted to kill Will Smith's Kid, he sucks as an actor, Will Smith sucks to.

They should have left well alone with this no need for a remake the original is one of my fave films so i'll not be watching this crap!
