I never really cared for it. I was really excited for it based on the awesome trailers but the whole thing just felt like a less inspired, goofier Return of the Jedi. This new one is still pretty derivative but I really liked the tone and the tactics of the aliens and humans this time around. It *does* have a few silly moments that are played for laughs but I did crack up (at the right times) and it never undermined the excitement of the battles IMO. It is quite the orgy of visual effects (it's very dense, a lot going on in every frame, etc.) but in a good way.

Cool, hopefully I'll like this one as much as you and Ween, I did like the first one a lot and will watch it today or tomorrow to get ready for this one.
But yeah it's derivative, it's basically a retelling of War of the Worlds, but I don't mind.
Must disagree with Khev and Ween. Didn't like it, I think the first one wipes the floor with it.

Well I had to drink afterwards to drown my sorrows over how typically over-escalated and generic this sequel was.

I always liked the idea of the first one. In fact I've liked the idea of pretty much every big Emmerich event film (Stargate, ID4, Godzilla 98) but he's always let me down. As to why I saw this one, well I was just kind of in the mood for some 90's-style Goldblum and lo and behold Emmerich actually delivered a fun movie around him this time. That's all it was--fun, forgettable summer fare but still I was entertained for two hours.
I preferred the ''present day'' setting and technology of the first film. Just more identifiable. Sure, it was a logical thing that we would have adapted alien technology and built new cities in the sequel but to me it just wasn't as engaging to watch. I didn't care about anything that was happening. Just noise on the screen.
The first film conveyed a real sense of fear and awe at humanity's first encounter with an alien race which was totally absent in this movie regardless of how much bigger the ship was.

Ah, okay. You like War of the Worlds and I like Robotech. Obviously the new ID4 was heavily skewed toward the latter.

Speaking of Robotech...we need that live action movie- even if it turns out bad I will probably dig it if I can see those Veritechs in action!!!
I think the last film I enjoyed in the cinema might have been Terminator Genisys of all things Maybe my expectations for that were just so damn low that I couldn't not enjoy it on some level.

The first one is pretty good tbh, I know everybody hates Emmerich but ID4 and Stargate are perfectly solid movies and better than most blockbusters nowadays.
