You haven't seen anything since then that you liked? :(

Well sure, I was just talking about films I saw in the cinema.

I forgot about The Force Awakens. That came out after Genisys. I enjoyed TFA in the cinema although I've kinda soured on it since then. As for Genisys, it's a guilty pleasure film but I don't regard it as a real Terminator movie.

Of the films I've seen in the cinema this year - BvS, X-men Apocalypse and now Independence Day Resurgence - my reaction coming out has been 'meh' for all of them. 3 films seems low, has there been anything else, what am I forgetting? (apart from Civil War)

Speaking of Robotech...we need that live action movie- even if it turns out bad I will probably dig it if I can see those Veritechs in action!!!

+1 to Robotech. Gonna skip this ID. First one is fine. Don't need to keep watching sequel. There is enough sequel to go after.

This year, off the top of my head was DeadPool. Since Genisys...I think Ant-Man? Can't remember when Jurassic World or Mad Max came out. Too lazy to look it up. Can't think of anything in that time period.

Jurassic World Came out last year of June.

I've tried watching the old series several times and I keep falling asleep on it. Even back in the 80's it just didn't do anything for me but I did like the vehicle designs. I love Macross Plus though.

Must disagree with Khev and Ween. Didn't like it, I think the first one wipes the floor with it.

I suppose it may seem a laughable thing to say but, compared to the first one, it felt cartoonish. The whole thing was a video game cut-scene to me, I felt no connection to any of it.

:lol

I always liked the idea of the first one. In fact I've liked the idea of pretty much every big Emmerich event film (Stargate, ID4, Godzilla 98) but he's always let me down. As to why I saw this one, well I was just kind of in the mood for some 90's-style Goldblum and lo and behold Emmerich actually delivered a fun movie around him this time. That's all it was--fun, forgettable summer fare but still I was entertained for two hours.

Hmmm curious to see who I agree with. I tend to get where both of you are coming from with you film taste and tend to share some of the same views.

I really don't care for the first film. I pretty much think that everything Emmerich has made is completely goofy and pretty bad. Only reason I am going is because my friend wants to and my kids want to. I could easily skip on this... But I find it interesting that khev does not care for the first but likes this one... Makes me think I might find some enjoyment... Yet a-dev makes it sound more like what I am expecting but he enjoys the first one, which was one of the major disappointments of my younger movie going life.

I will declare who is wrong and who is right after Tuesday night ;)

20 years ago the way we saw the white house get all blown up was the pinnacle of SFX and CGI in that time. In all reality Emmerich is a Michael Bay but of Universal proportions and I love it. I knew what I was going to expect from this movie especially after seeing how bad 2012 was, therefore it was quite enjoyable the only bad part was the way Hiller's mom finale but that's about it.

Well if going even goofier is a good thing then this film achieves superiority.

I don't know how you can even say (or type) that with a straight face. In the first film Will Smith magically knows how to fly an advanced alien spacecraft because "I've seen how they maneuver." Um, okay, I watched the Blue Angels at an air show once so now I guess I can pilot an F-18.

In the new one the humans tested out the new tech for 20 years, sometimes with fatal results. Much more believable.

In the original the aliens wiped out tens of millions of humans and then, when Will Smith doesn't even know if his *wife and kid* survived the devastation inflicted on *his own city* he's immediately joking around with Harry Connick Jr ("hold me") in the briefing room prior to the first counter attack and then goes up and delivers one-liners left and right ("oh you did NOT shoot that green **** at me") like it was a ****ing MIB or Wild Wild West movie. This was a film that had marketed itself and then even presented itself for the first 30 minutes as what a "real" alien invasion might look like. But everything just turned silly and was crap.

In the new movie the pilots seemed to really carry the weight of the world on their shoulders. And because everyone lost someone either in the first invasion or the sequel they carried that bittersweet vibe throughout.

And then with regard to the aliens tactics I loved that they:

analyzed their first defeat and as their first order of business when they came back they lured bombers into their mothership so they could blast them with an EMP and then have drones coat the bombers in shields so that the humans couldn't set off nukes inside anymore. Second order of business was to send a strike team to eliminate the American president so that the world wouldn't be emboldened by any iconic speeches from that particular office.

That was all really good stuff. The rest was varying levels of *good* 90's cheese, and overall much better than the first. The T1/T2 debates have subsided, begun the ID4 war has.... ;)

As for JAWS, I predict that he will NOT like this new film but will indeed recognize it as being superior to the original.

I didn't even realize this came out. Gotta find time to see it. I don't love the first one but enjoy it for an over-the-top action movie and a movie I did love as a kid. My expectations for this are low but I hope to be surprised.

Khev, they weren't his wife and kid. He had taken on the role of Dad and husband but she was still just a single mom and stripper that he was sleeping with.

I enjoyed Will Smith in the first movie. He, Goldblum, Hirsch, crazy Quaid and the president's speech made that movie entertaining for me. I never took the movie seriously, although the first lady's death and her daughter talking to the president gets me every time. I'll watch the sequel when it hits one of the streaming services.

Okay, you are right about not his wife because they do officially get married toward the end right? But still are you joking about her being "just a single mom and stripper?" I can't tell. :lol Married or not she was his woman and they were a family.

I do enjoy everything you mention above (save Smith) in the first movie though, my disappointment with it has greatly subsided now that many other movies have properly filled the "aliens invade earth" void, including the new one. The original now does admittedly have a bit of nostalgia (undeserved or not) and is actually made better now that the sequel has rectified the "humans and aliens are all idiots playing 'Star Wars'" motif.

Yes, but he bought her an ring to marry her!

Hmm, so, if a film gets so totally ridiculous enough, that very ridiculousness becomes invisible to Khev - making it appear better than a previous less ridiculous film *strokes chin* :monkey3

This was baddd. And I usually love every summer blockbuster I see. It was all over the place with unnecessary plot lines and characters. There is no nostalgia for the first one here. There is no spectacle, at all. No heart like the first had. Stay away.
