The memory issue is because it's using flash memory, which is much more stable than hard drives, but it's a new technology so there isn't a high capacity yet. This is also probably why the Iphone and Ipod touch are expensive.

I do prefer the Ipod Touch though to the Iphone, since it's cheaper, and I don't have to pay for a monthly service. And it can connect to the internet. Now I just have to see if I can sell my current Ipod to use the money for an Ipod Touch.

I am not interested in the iPhone but have been waiting for the technology of the touch screen and widescreen display to be applied to the iPod and now here it is. But what's up with the 8 and 16 gigs of memory?

i think they are using a different kind of drive space than the previous ipods. no longer are hard drives being used but some form of flash memory if i remember correctly. someone posted information on a mac forum a couple months ago when the iphone came out and people were grumbling about the small capacity of the drive.

Interesting that they'd switch memory style, I've had my mini for over 2 years and never had a problem.

Well, flash memory is very secure against damage. You can drop it a lot and it probably won't get messed up. However (as people with a computer will know) hard drives are much less solid, they can break pretty easily and that's really the big difference between the Ipod Classic and the Ipod Nano/Shuffle/Touch/Iphone.

Hard drives really are quite week, one time I took the hard drive out of my computer for just a second, when I put it back in it started clicking and it was shot (clicking means that the discs are misaligned which can cause data loss and you can't use the drive)

Well, if they can increase the memory then I'm sold. I would love the newer features but I just won't sacrifice the memory of my (now discontinued) 60 GB model. Considering that you can now fill your regular iPod up with 160 gigs worth of content, they should offer more than just 10% of that with the new touch screen version. As soon as they do, I will buy one.

I would imagine that the ammount of memory they're offering is relative to what's available in this size device right now; Apple isn't going to skimp on provided memory for any reason other than it's not cost efficient to the end consumer or it increases the size of the device to a point they don't want to go, otherwise, they'll put what they can into the things, hence a classic iPod with as much memory as a home PC.

I've had my old 6GB iPod for over two years now. I don't felt the need do upgrade just yet. Unfortunately, it doesn't taste like chocolate.

I love Apple products for their simplicity - both in design and use. IF you want to get more complex you can (adding apps, etc), but I love how they don't needlessly bog things down with extra, fancy, 'zing-pow' cr@p. To me, they are as close to a perfect company as you can get. A little pricy, but for good reason, IMO.

All the other MP3 players I've ever played with are needlessly complex. Pretty much anyone can pick up an iPod and figure out how to work it in a minute or less. I love not having to read directions in order to figure out how to use something (and that goes for their computers too) - powerful and easy to use, can't ask for much more :rock I've been wanting to upgrade my iPod (still have an old Mini that I actually won direct from Apple in one of their iTunes 'Countdown to _____ Songs Downloaded' contests) Looks like I have some awesome options now! :chew

I like Ipods, but, I just can't do Macs, mainly because of the price since I know I can get way more for my money by buying a Windows-based PC. As far as music players go, Ipod is the original, all the rest are imitations, I love the one I have and I really like their new offering.

Dusty, you rule! I'm on the fence about upgrade options, I have about 30GB of songs on my computer; part of me wants to get the touch pad for top of the line technology, but the 80GB classic has plenty of memory, decisions decisions.

Well, it's time to finally upgrade my 20GB 3rd gen. Do I go for the 80 GB "classic" or do I go with the phoneless iPhone?

I want more capacity, but the iPod touch is pretty tempting... bah, I'll just get 'em both.

At that point, it becomes very confusing to me why someone would get a Nano. That is a major difference for only fifty bucks.

I think the draw of the nano has more to do with it's size physcially than capacity; someone looking to keep their mp3 player in a smaller space or on arm bands for sports work and things of that sort would do better with a smaller model than the full size.

I love the idea of the iTouch version but with the memory capacities its a no brainer that they'll release next gen versions with larger memory capabilities as soon as its available. I have a blue iPod mini that has served me well for years and will probably trade up to a new iPod video but I will wait on the iTouch until the memory catches up, at this point my Mini is completely full and I end up deleting songs to add new ones...

The Ipod classic isn't exactly heavy or huge and the Ipod Nano is pretty close to the same size (although I think it's actually thinner than the Nano used to be)

Too bad the Ipod Touch doesn't have a microphone, then people could use it as a skype phone.

And the prices are just strange. The 60 was worth about as much as the 30GB one was, but the 80GB is now worth as much as that one was, but yet the 30GB 60GB are significantly better than the 8GB Nano... hmm.

On a sidenote, I really want to see Shoot 'Em Up on Friday.

I don't think your statement is 100% accurate. Apple is a company after all and there are people out there that buy the new models all the time. IT would be in Apple's best interest to release a smaller capacity unit first and sell as many as possible then update it and sell to those same people again that must have the newest gadget. :)

$$$$

It's always the same story when I by an iPod. I get one and two weeks later a newer model is released. Well I will beat them at their own game and keep my old one till it completely fries out! Ha to you Apple!

That's probably one reason. But I'm sure that the Flash memory is one reason for the high cost and lower memory capacity. Notice that the Ipod Touch has more memory than the Iphone did and they lowered the price of the Iphone which probably reflects the falling cost of flash memory. Although I would prefer that they'd use a hard drive if it would give more memory for the same price or for cheaper.

That is one thing that kind of gets me too. Wasn't the iPhone just released like a month or two ago and now they are dropping the price by $200?! Wow. I would be pissed. :lol:lol

I think that kind of proves that they release an inferior product first in hopes of snagging the impatient people then release the better product just a little bit down the road. I will continue to wait. :) Until my iPod takes out the trash for me, I will wait. :lol
