I've changed my mind about KOTCS

The internet? No. But BBS (Bulletin Board Systems) were pretty popular in those days. Ah, the good old days of the 300 baud rate...

Man oh man--- The BBS must'a ripped TOD a new one over the cartoony life raft fall from the plane and Willie's annoying character.

:lol

sadly, not so for indy4. the furthest i always ever make it is halfway thru. that's when the whole movie falls completely apart for me.

I didn't mind the team aspect, since it felt a lot like a fifties adventure movie. Even though the sidekicks were allowed to be a little more proactive here, it's not as though they were an entirely new addition to the series. You generally expect to see Indy traveling with a couple of offbeat sidekicks and a love interest.

But I do think it's interesting that the second half appears to have given people the most trouble. By all accounts, this was basically the half of the film that was Spielberg's creation.

Lucas is the one who wanted to explore new territory by pushing Indy into a completely new era. Spielberg is the one who wanted to shy away from that approach, and instead have Indy treading over familiar ground. The end result is that most critics praised the bolder elements of the first half, while being underwhelmed by the "greatest hits" feel of the second.

I've liked it since the first time I saw it. A lot of people are really hard on it, especially the fridge scene, but it just seems like something that would only happen to Indy.

Yea I really didn't think the fridge scene was that bad, it isn't like he was at the point of the blast.

I love the fridge scene. It's totally Indy, like falling out of the plane in ToD in an inflatible raft and hitting the ground with a nice, soft bounce. :lol

Or holding on to the outside of a submarine as it makes its way to a secret Nazi stronghold on a far away island.

It's amazing how all of these people who bash the absurdity of KOTCS seem to remember Raiders with rose-coloured glasses. They're all good movies (some great a la ROTLA) if taken for what they are.

the problem i have with the team aspect in kotcs was that indy was relegated to an almost supporting role. that never happened with the other 3 films. indy was always in control, and the sidekicks (sallah, short round, dad) were there to help or guide him. ultimately, it was INDY who figured stuff out and acted on it. in kotcs, they relied WAAAY too much on the annoying oxley character to move the plot forward. and i absolutely hated the double/triple/quadruple-crossing mac character. he was supposed to keep u guessing but it just came across lame and contrived.

did they really need so many characters? in kotcs, there were FOUR other people in indy's team. i would've been totally fine with just indy and mutt, with marion in it only at certain points.

oh well, wishful thinking...

totally agree. i never had a problem with the fridge, or the gophers. they were the LEAST of the film's problems.

Add me to the list of people that have liked KOTS from the start. Was it was the best film ever? no, but it was enjoyable. Truth be told, I can sit through and enjoy the whole thing...until that damn alien shows up, I'm cringing just thinking about it. Ugh.

The alien is the one thing that bugs me too, at least the design of it anyway. It was too modern X-Files looking. They should have stuck with 50's B movie vibe and gone with a really weird Paul Blaisdell type creature.

^^ Agreed, but correct me if I'm wrong, the skull needed to be that shape to fit the crystal skull lore.

You mean the real world crystal skulls? To my knowledge, they're all normal human shaped, but most people going to see the movie have probably never even heard of them anyway, so they should've just played around with it and went for a far out 50's bug-eyed monster imo. If you're going to put Indy and spaceships together, go crazy with it! :lol

Yup, the real crystal skulls are human-shaped, which is why I was a bit disappointed they went the alien route. I prefer my Indy stories based (albeit loosely) in reality; when he's pursuing actual artifacts that exist (or are thought to exist) in our reality, I find myself drawn more into the narrative.

There were any number of real or imagined artifacts he could have been after in this latest movie, from the Spear of Destiny to the Philosopher's Stone. That they chose instead to create their own artifact in order to fit the storyline seemed a bit lazy, in my opinion.

Still, it was a decent popcorn flick with only a few cringe-worthy moments, so I definitely wouldn't call it the worst movie in history. It was no Star Trek II, but at least it wasn't Star Trek V.

I was okay with it because Indy was always driving the action forward. He decoded all the riddles and was the one who took control during the jungle convoy. I also felt that Indy's relationship with Oxley was one of patience, rather than necessity. He doesn't really need Oxley to help him get out of the Ugha cave. He seems more concerned with helping Oxley find what he needs to discover than anything else. Henry Sr. upstaged Indy far more than Harold Oxley, imo.

Now having said all that, I do think that one more Indy scene in the jungle would've gone a long way. Many fans focused so much on Mutt's antics that they didn't really pause to consider how much Indy had truly done.

Didn't Mythbusters prove that the fall in the life raft was actually plausible?

They did attempt the stunt, but it was hardly what was seen in TOD. It was very controlled and I believe only involved a single mannequin. In reality, dropping a ten-year-old kid from a plane would end as badly as launching a grown man in a refrigerator.

actually, the spear of destiny or spear of longinus was featured in constantine. if not, yeah, it would've made a nice macguffin.

indy relied FAR too much on oxley, who was not even a proper character imo, but a plot device. that's the other main difference between him and henry senior, who was charming and funny and INTERESTING. so even if dad regularly upstaged indy himself, it was hugely entertaining. oxley was a tiresome, one-note non-entity.
