I loved them putting it in the X-Files universe, but does that make it a homage or a rip-off?

But a GREAT season premiere. I was sure that Olivia was dead but it was the alternate reality Olivia - I got that because Walter called her "Olive". But the way it played out was better, although the amnesia is a bit tired. The new FBI agent is going to be interesting too with her secret agenda. Walter and Peter's interaction is still classic - some great lines and delivery there.

That's one thing I'm wondering about, is it really her at all? Maybe we'll find out later that the here-reality Olivia is still in the alternate reality and that alternate-reality Olivia was the one that came through the windshield.

I hate u guys!...my stupid LTS stopped showing Fringe here in TDot......

It's interesting that you say that, because FRINGE is very much playing in the same field that Mulder and Scully once did, sans grey aliens and black oil. The first season of Fringe gave us a grand conspiracy ala X-Files with William Bell, ZFT and the alternate universe. Now we have the Fringe version of super-soldiers, an interesting but ultimately pointless plot device from the latter seasons of X-Files. Let's put it this way. I like what JJ and crew are doing with these definite X-Files-esque ideas and have to give them this praise too--the first season of FRINGE and that entire season 2 premiere was better than the last three seasons of X-Files combined. So this in my opinion is not a bad thing.

Now, about Olivia. I'm going to have to watch the season 2 premiere again but I thought she recognized Peter right off the bat while in the hospital. Peter should not exist in the alternate universe with what we now know about Walter and how he "got back what he had lost."
Not saying that's not a possibility that we could have been introduced to her doppelganger in that premiere. But like I said, I'm going to have to watch again. What I will say is this. I think Olivia was on her way to see the alternate universe Walter after meeting Walter's wife/Peter's mom in that universe. I think that alternate universe Walter is the man behind the curtain here and he is the one orchestrating the attacks on our universe and giving the soldier his orders. I bet that once his son was taken away from him, that alternate universe Walter went bad and turned into a menace to both universes. Could evil Walter orchestrated the destruction of his universe's White House? William Bell may know this. In a way, if this is true, we may have already met alternate universe Walter when our universe's Walter was put back in the asylum in season 1. If you remember, Walter who was apparently hallucinating (or was he) was talking to his doppelganger, a very evil doppelganger in that particular episode...

all i know is with them introducing that new girl at the start, i thought for 5 mins they were really killing off olivia and i was cursing the tv :lol

Ok, great episode overall, but...

...wouldn't they have done an autopsy on the nurse and figured out it was a human body not a shapeshifter? I mean, the whole premise of the show is investigating the unknown - Walter with a supposed alternate-world body would have gone ape. 2 + 2 and BINGO! Charlie must be the killer now! Pretty big plot hole there...

Still enjoyed it though :)

They knew she was a shapshifter and after examining her would have found the nail holes in her mouth. But the other FBI agent that the guy hid and burned, they had no way of knowing he had changed into. I really think this is a very clever way to open this season. :rock

But they should end up with two of the nurse's body if they really got the shapeshifter as they found the original people's bodies. So yeah, a pretty big hole there unless it is on purpose and eventually leads them to finding out Charlie is dead and really the shapeshifter.

And I too thought the X-files references were great. Do you think there is any chance they'd actually get Mulder and Scully to guest star on an episode or two? I think that would actually be quite awesome. I've always felt Fox/other stations should cross over their shows more often when it makes sense. The CSIs have done in with the other CSIs and well as another show (criminal minds?). So it has been done before, but probably not with a canceled show.

I've decided JJ Abram shows are really designed to keep you guessing. Just like with Lost we already have a bunch of crazy theories. Alternate universe bad versions of our guys, etc. I think its all of those crazy ideas off the show that make the show so much fun to watch.

I was desperately hoping that Peter and Olivia were going to make Charlie show them the roof of his mouth when they came upon him over the nurse's body.

Yeah, you would think they would want to check everyone that was in the basement when dealing with a shapeshifter but that would make too much sense.

That would be AWESOME if Mulder & Scully made an appearence! :banana :banana

Detective Much (Richard Belzer), a character from Homicide: Life on the Street & Law & Order, guest starred in the X-Files episode Unusual Suspects. :D

So it's not an impossibility. :rock

Munch is an alien. He has been on so many shows and crossed so many genres. Cop shows, sci fi, drama. If you go just on Munch Law and Order/L&O:SVU, Homicide Life on the Streets, X-Files - all the same universe. And now since X-Files and Fringe may share the same universe that would mean Munch is there too.

He also appeared on The Wire.
