I'd hate to miss an opportunity to revisit a cool character cause some comic decided to do a gary mitchell storyline. I don't read IDW, and have no intention of doing so.
I keep hearing, 'but he's dead in the comic,' like that means anything.....(normally)
Matt, normally I would agree with you, but it's been said by the film writers that the comics are canon. They happened. They're supposed to hint to storylines in the new movie as well. Orci is managing them. So what reason would there be not to go by them? It's disastrous from a marketing perspective to ignore it.
Not to mention, they've already announced another mini-series tie-in prequel leading into the movie. Why would they do it if there already was one (meaning, the Gary Mitchell story in print)? That just doesn't add up.
It COULD be that they could make it so that Gary Mitchell didn't die, or that he came back etc etc., that's possible. But rehashing Where No Man Has Gone Before AGAIN would be just plain dumb based on all that.
Here's my thought:
The nuTrek universe comics hint that Starfleet Intelligence has a much greater role now, and that Sulu was recruited by them - though it's not clear if he joined up with them or not. They were behind the Landru experiment in "Return of the Archons." My guess is that they will have a big role to play in this movie.
And as for Eve/Dehner, um...why not Carol Marcus? That would make the whole "family" reference in the trailer even more poignant. A pregnant Carol? The Crew? The ship? It's all family.
Based on that line too, I'm thinking it's Ben Finney, and that he "died" on an away mission, only he didn't - he was taken in by Intelligence, who genetically modified him into a super soldier with Eugenics, and Finney blames Kirk for his "death" so he's getting revenge. Maybe his daugther Jamie dies in this universe too, who knows.
Or it could be - and this makes more sense - Garth of Izar, a fleet captain who went nuts and learned to shapeshift in TOS. Could be his shapeshifting/etc is a result of Intelligence too. Just think both of these make more sense than rehashing the comic plot.
Just my thought, of course!
