Here's how I feel; this is Khan:

This is ONLY khan. Or Javier Bardem. What if Cumberbatch isn't the villian, but a henchmen. Would be brilliant and throw us all off the scent?

I don't think cumberbatch is khan, he could be but I don't get why would he use a name like john harrison if that's not his real name, from the trailers i'm gathering they knew who cumberbatchs character was before his return. I'm guessing alot of this is just a misinformation campaign.

I would totally agree with that, except for one important detail. When it comes to secrecy, JJ Abrams is a paranoid schizophrenic that's freaked out about revealing what color socks a character wears normally. So could I see him going this far? Sure.....time will tell. I have NO CLUE what's going on, though!!!

I'll be a little disappointed if they do use Kahn in this or any future Trek. It will just seem like a re-tread. I mean, why re-make the most popular OT Trek movie, when they've gone to such lengths to create this alternate timeline that frees them from repeating anything we've seen in the movies or TV show or books? Seems like there are an infinite amount of other stories that could be told.

I don't think Cumberbatch is Kahn either but I do think we'll see a lot from that film recycled into a newer continuity and even some of the parts of Kahn pushed in this character. Although I wouldn't put it past Abrams to call him Harrison or whatever only to have the character itself call himself Kahn as sort of a persona gained from an event but I still think Abrams has something up his sleeve especially since people are banking on the Wrath of Kahn 2.0.

I'm astonishingly excited about this, far more than I thought I'd be.

April? I read April is actually a character from a book, and his arc involved the klingons stopping him from helping a crew in need which ended in their death. We did see cumberbatch taking out a few klingons in the trailer.

Robert April was meantioned back in the original show, or original pilot, but not sure on the EU books or whatnot...I could definitely enjoy Cumberpatch as a rogue April

I'm trying to remember if Abrams hid the identity and name Nero during the initial marketing of Star Trek.

Nope, the name "Nero" was officially revealed quite early on, though it didn't mean a heck of a lot to anyone, because it was a brand-new character. I think the fact that Nero was Romulan was revealed soon after the name was released. But it wasn't until late in the game that photos of Nero started to surface, and his appearance was kinda shocking - a bald Romulan with his face covered in tattoos was something no one had seen before, and it hinted at the new direction of the Trek reboot.

There's a lot of TOS stuff that's hard to tie-down, canon-wise. April's one of them. He is widely considered the first captain of the TOS Enterprise before Pike, but that was never established on-screen (except in an animated episode, which isn't considered canon, although canon stuff has come from it later - Specifically stuff about Vulcan culture and Spock's youth, Kirk's middle name being "Tiberius," and Spock's mom's maiden name "Grayson"). So whether or not he ever existed is up in the air. What we do know is that the age of the Enterprise given by Admiral Morrow in Wrath of Khan leaves quite a few years in service in addition to the ten we know of with Pike and five with Kirk.

In this timeline, obviously the Enterprise is a newer ship (Kirk would have to have been a young teenager in the original timeline when it was launched). So it makes sense that Pike would have been the first captain, and then the events with Nero took him out sooner than he would have in the other timeline. April would've never had a shot to captain it.

But doesn't Cumberbatch's age make that less likely? April would have been a captain ten years before Kirk. That's a big age gap.

April was never official beyond TAS and some development notes when Rodenberry was first drafting and casting characters, but when "Enterprise" was being developed Archer was originally going to be Robert April.

More details on "John Harrison" straight from Cumberbatch:
I play John Harrison who’s a terrorist and an extraordinary character in his own right. He’s somebody who is not your two-dimensional cookie cutter villain. He’s got an extraordinary purpose, and I hope that at one point or other in the film you might even sympathize with the reasons he’s doing what he’s doing — not necessarily the means and the destruction he causes. But it was a great ride, not just because he’s the bad guy and the antagonist but also because he has a purpose and it’s hard not to see his point of view at certain points.

He has extraordinary physical powers, but also mental powers. He can sow an idea, which is as powerful as gunshots or close-hand combat, which he’s masterful in. He tears into the fabric of both the world and the Enterprise family, and he leaves behind him a trail of devastation. It’s quite exciting to watch.
