It was a great movie, but I wouldn't say perfect 10 out of 10 like some.

They really didn't need to rehash the old material like that.
I get what they are trying to do, but still...

And I'm not a "new" fan because of the cool reboot.
I've followed Trek since the original series, and love those original movies too.
And that being said, I'll probably watch Wrath of Khan, and Search for Spock, more than I would this one.
If anything it made me want to come home and watch the original movies again!

Liked the last Star Trek much more
many times I wondered when the crew became superhumans in strength
Also big scene with two characters failed if you know Enterprise and crew went on to a TV series and motion pictures

Haha great post man! I actually came home and put Wrath of Kahn on straight after. Let's be honest, it's the benchmark. Even Trek III I loved as a companion piece to WOK.
As for this film, yeah it was good on its own merits as long as you park your brain at the door.

I recently saw the film. I liked it but I guess w/age I am a major critic...
I was hoping Spock w/be re-assigned to the U.S.S. Constellation under Matt Decker (well if he did command the ship). U.S.S. Vengence, whoa what a name I have one...U.S.S. Supremacy. Harrison as Khan....OMG why? I cringed when I heard the K-name. What about Joachim instead? He could confess to Kirk that he claimed to be Khan to Adm. Marcus to protect his leader and revive him & the others later on? Was the Botnay Bay ever mentioned?

There's probably other things to nitpick but I can't think of any right now....:lol

I guess it wasn't such a shock to me since I read all the speculation online months ago, and TheEnemy spoiled it with his Interest thread the other day, but a significant portion of the audience gasped
when Cumberbatch said "My name is KHAAAAAAN".
I was surprised that they were surprised.

I just rolled my eyes.

Thanks, Internet.

I noticed a lot of people just aren't up on the news. Like, when the Anchorman trailer played people were amped for it, and I was like "I've seen this ten times already". . . I miss being surprised about stuff. How awesome would it be to learn about a movie for the first time, watching the trailer, like if you didn't know they were making an Anchorman 2, and you loved the first one, and those guys come walking up on screen, you'd be stoked. Ahhhh well, can't put that genie back in the bottle.

Your suggestion would have been much better IMO. And at least Cumberbatch has more resemblance to Joachim than he does 'the other guy'.

THEN maybe they could have gotten a more suitable actor to play Khan in a later film

Thank you a-dev. :duff

I also 100% agree about a different actor playing Khan.

Just saw the commercial for the Kreo short for this on Cartoon Network...

"Red Alert! Shields up! Lens flares on!"

:rotfl

Interesting. My brain decided to accompany me, and I still enjoyed it immensely.

Benedict's hot-headed, pasty and super-Britishy villain is the equivalent of Terry Crews playing the Joker with no make-up, green hair, or a purple suit.

Cumberbatch is great as this generic megalomaniac. But to call him
Khan, and make no attempt to explain why he looks or acts the way he does is ridiculous. I seriously thought they were gonna pull a BATMAN BEGINS and have Cumberbatch be Khan's decoy general, while the real guy was hidden in cryostasis.

Yes, Montalban was Mexican. But at least they made an attempt to give him a spray-on tan to pass as an Indian prince. Why couldn't they do the same with Benedict and give him brown contact lenses?

It isn't just ethnicity that's an issue. The original Khan was charismatic and calculating.
"Harrison" is just a loud-mouth, violent prick. Unlike the rest of the Abrams cast,
Khan is Khan
in name only and has NOTHING in common with his namesake, save for super-strength.

So why even bother?

Because the majority don't know who he is, and why he's so important.

It was a silly move for that reason alone.

I agree. To the general public, his name could have been Robert Smith, and it wouldn't have made any difference to the story.

Which is why fan service ike that isn't that good. Honestly, I say **** the fans, and just do what's right for the story.

And while I didn't hate it....it just, didn't need to be.

Benedict Cumberbatch doesn't look like he's from north India.

Is he supposed too?

I was posting in here alot a few months back but I went on radio silence for this film as I didn't want to be spoiled of who the villain really was. I didn't think it would be Khan as he doesn't look like the original villain but man was I freakin excited when they said he was 300 years old. I knew who he was then when that was said.

My only problem with Khan was that once he took over the giant ship he's not given a chance to really do any damage, nothing like the previous captain of the ship did. he did most of his damage while we didn't know who he was. I personally prefer my villains when they aren't hiding behind a vail much like the Romulains of the first film. Once we learned he was Khan he already had his best moments as a villain. Benedict was still awesome though.

But I will say it was quite chilling when Kirk was trying to beat him up and he just looked at kirk like he was nothing, probably my favorite moment from this film.

Overall really good but just a notch lower than the previous film. I wonder what will happen to the franchise since this is doing about the same as the first film minus the foreign take, which is better. I wouldn't be surprised if JJ doesn't come back for another one after this.

I liked how the film ended -
as opposed to STII where Khan dies.

With Star Wars VII firmly in front of him, I wonder if he'll be able to do another Trek. I have enjoyed both of the Trek films immensely and even though I am super excited he is doing SW, I would hate for Trek to die all over again in another director's hands.

:lecture I was thinking the same thing yesterday during and after watching this movie. I enjoyed watching this one, but after having some time to think about it I really don't care for it. I'll stick with the first one.

I've been thinking about the movie again sorry folks.....:thud:

Yeah I would prefer "him" being Jochaim lying to Adm. Marcus claiming he is Khan. The brig scene w/Kirk & Spock; He would confess to both of them that Khan agreed to have Jochaim takes his place, change the dates, cyro-tube names or whatever so if anyone found out who Khan is in the tube they would unfreeze Jochaim instead. And for the ending Kirk can ask Bones; so which one of these guys is Khan? Bones: I don't know we may never know, Hell Khan could be a woman as far as I know.

I'm glad writing isn't my primary job....:lol

"a more suitable actor"??? Again, it's all about race for you. :slap

Cumberbatch is a phenomenal actor who delivered an impressive performance, by far the best performance of both Abrams movies. Somehow you're letting his race cloud your opinion of the character when the character's race has nothing to do with the plot, in any universe. :dunno
