Re: J.J. Abrams' Star Trek 2

That was my only complaint with the first one. Kirk goes from cadet straight to captain. Everything felt like it was happening at warp 9.

They all do, they're all cadets one minute and senior bridge crewmen on the starfleet flagship the next. It was fun but a bit of a stretch.

Go to a military acadamy and you're automatically an officer on graduation, so it's not much of a stretch really.

I would love it if this was the first Star Trek movie to not have EARTH in it once...Remember the 'explore strange new worlds' line?

Officer no, but straight to captain of a ship yes. Of course this is Star Trek so a few movies with Kirk working his way up isn't what any Trek fan wants to see. He needs to be captain.

Re: J.J. Abrams' Star Trek 2

It did seem like a major rush, but there are some factors to consider:

1. Spock Prime likely briefed Starfleet on the way the timeline was supposed to have unfolded, and that would require Kirk becoming Captain of the ENTERPRISE.

2. All the ships dispatched to Vulcan except for the ENTERPRISE were completely destroyed by the Narada, leaving Starfleet severely short-staffed at the end of the film.

By the end, one of the underlying themes of the movie was that, regardless of what Nero changed, Kirk and the original crew were always destined to be on the ENTERPRISE.

But, yeah...I also hope that the next movie slows it down a bit. A little more restraint on the lens flares would be nice too! Hey, it's great that Abrams has his own visual style, but he tends to overkill on it.

I didn't mean in ST....I meant real life. Aren't you a lieutenant when you graduate from military school?

Yes. I have some experience with this as this is exactly what I did. But LT is a far cry from being a captain of a ship in charge of hundreds of people. LTs are brand new (and often still in the "college kid" mentality) and with no experience aren't given much more respect or responsibility than privates. We often joke that our only job is to try and avoid accidently blowing up the base.
Hell, most people spend the majority of thier careers as a LT doing random office work around base or in job training waiting to be promoted. Usually it takes two years to be promoted to a 1st LT, and another three to be promoted to Captain. But even when you make the rank of Captain you still aren't given that much to be in charge of. It just means that they trust you to be professional, make smart decisions, and do your job without being constantly watched. Expect 10 years before they trust you to be in charge of anything larger than a small office staff.

Im not quite sure how the Star Trek Starfleet ranks work, but if I had to guess id say that the Captain of a starship would probably be the equivilant of a Colonel in our military. Someone who has 15-20 years worth of experience under thier belt and has stood out from thier peers over the course of thier career as a clear leader. There is no way in all hell they would hand over the command of a giant starship to a brand new officer. Not unless they want the worlds largest government subsidized party bus roaming the galaxy.

I was thinking Starfleet was pretty stripped out though at that point. I need to watch this again soon. And I think you have to attend Star Fleet 4 years? Hell, I don't know.

Re: J.J. Abrams' Star Trek 2

Yea, alot of fleet ships were destroyed, but I find it hard to believe that Starfleet had no officers with any more experience than a recent Cadet graduate. Most of the teachers at the academy probably had some operations experience.

I can understand the fleet being understaffed and needing to populate starships with cadets, but no way in hell they would put one in charge.

And yes, Starfleet academy is 4 years long. But that really isn't any officer experience. It isn't all that different from being at college. We just work harder not to get caught in our crazy antics. I mentioneed you needed 10 years minimum until you get any real responsibility. Those don't start until you graduate as an LT.

Nope. Earth needs to be in peril and the only ship close enough to help has to be the Enterprise.

...though, iirc, Insurrection didn't have Earth in it once.

Re: J.J. Abrams' Star Trek 2

I'd rather have a new story than a retread, but I'm sure whatever Abrams & co. have cooking will be fantastic.

Re: J.J. Abrams' Star Trek 2

Where No Man Has Gone Before is my favorite episode so I'd be down with Gary Mitchell. That episode had everything right, the Enterprise out further then any other ship, crazy space anomaly, crew and friends turned against each other, man becoming God themes.

Exactly, that ep was awesome on a limited budget; can you imagine a $150 million dollar version?
