Well I finally saw it. Ummm...I grant you reading all spoilers and reviews beforehand has probably influenced my initial opinion but I didn't like it. At all.

It has really made me wish they didn't try to connect it to the original Star Trek universe in any way and just gone full franchise reboot. Because they try to connect it (with old Spock and the storyline of the previous film) and yet at the same time its too far removed in almost every way.

If it weren't spinning off from the original Trek-verse I think I would enjoy it more.

Star Wars will definitely be much more fitting for Abrams.

:goodpost::exactly: Couldn't agree more. A reboot is not supposed to refer to or bring older actors back. They want to have their own universe and still milk the Nimoy cameos and it just doesn't mesh. Own your vision, and leave TOS Spock/Nimoy out.

Just a pity the damage is already done. As far as I'm concerned with this film they just Final Frontiered the new movies already. It makes me want to disregard the 09 film aswell even though that one was less flawed.

Saw MOS last night. Nope. STID is still my most enjoyable movie of the season. And I'm as big of a Superman fan as anyone.

It used to be the norm to have old characters in reboots. It's for the old fans.

I honestly don't see what the big deal is. Nimoy was a blurp on the screen really.

Best movie for me so far this summer.

Well I enjoyed 2009's Star Trek as I thought they were just trying to reboot things, albeit with Nimoy being involved. But I never thought they'd bring him back in really a silly appearance.

I loved this film where at the same time I agree with A-Dev about it connecting to the original Treks. It feels and looks different from the old Trek. I mean even though it's a new time line, it feels like a completely different universe all together.

However....with that being said, I still enjoyed the heck out of it. I loved the 2009 one as well. I like to think of it as a reboot even though old Spock appears. I just pretend that this old Spock is still from the rebooted version of Trek.

Yeah, a completely unnecessary blurp that was a waste of a cameo. 2009's fit better. This one was, oh, yeah, we need to get Nimoy in somewhere. Only way it could have been worse in that scene was if Nimoy turned around and on a view screen behind him, Wrath of Khan final battle was playing. I'm just wondering what standard, if any, fans even have anymore. Star Trek V was crap, but it was at least distinguishable crap from Star Wars. This new film is really how many CGI shots a minute can we have, and yeah, we'll throw some recycled plot at it.

My best of the summer so far as well, and I frankly don't think any other I'll see this summer will beat it.

I love the original Trek, and love this Trek too. I think the movie was awesome. I might even like it a little more than '09.

I will agree that Nimoy's cameo in this film wasn't a good a idea and I wouldn't have placed it there myself (maybe for a different reason than most, though). But as far as the overall "alternate timeline" goes, it works fine for me. I like that it's different and yet still connected.

Can't say anything about MOS though - I'm just not a Superman fan, so no matter how good the movie is, I doubt I'll enjoy it as much as I did Trek. I love the Trek characters. Supes has always been my least favorite of the major superheroes.

ID still has a long way to go to tie 2009's domestic box office. Iron Man 3 is having an uncanny longevity, while ID does modestly in subsequent weeks. Fast and Furious 6 really started to stunt ID's growth and it's already past it slightly in the domestic box office. ID needs a couple more good weekends, but with Superman coming, I don't see it. It could literally finish below 2009's domestic box office.

Yep. For another 24-hours or so.

We shall see! Hopefully because it would be a win-win.

Hmm, that doesn't sound too good. Can't wait to see it.

Same here I it was a welcome distraction from the disappointment of Iron man 3

Ya, I was really dissapointed with that one.

Which would be fine if it were intended to be entirely seperate but it isn't. So rather than being able to simply look at it as a film on its own merits I can't help but compare it to older Star Trek and find a whole swathe of problems that otherwise wouldn't be problems.

I don't understand why young Spock even called old Spock at that point. What exactly prompted him to do it? Why was he asking about Khan? As far as he knew Admiral Marcus was the much more immediate threat at that time. Why wasn't he asking Old Spock 'Did you ever encounter a Starfleet Admiral Marcus?' It was as though he knew beating Marcus was a foregone conclusion and that Khan was the real threat when in actuality as far as he knew Khan was on their side. Theres also the fact that he makes this call in front of the whole bridge crew and no one bats an eyelid that Spock is somehow talking to his future self. Has Nimoy Spock announced his presence to the whole federation - it didn't seem like he was going to at the end of the 09 film. Annnddd the silliness that they can call old Spock but apparently no other starfleet ships - which would have been handier in their situation at that time. Not that it should even have been necessary to call reinforcements given that they were over earth and Starfleet should have been instantly aware of what was going on.

Your logic is lost on some of these posters and the writers and director. It's not hard to make a good movie without gaping plotholes when you have 4 years to write and film it. This has all the signs of too many writers not on the same page and holes were left wide open or inconsistencies as your mentioned. Novels don't typically get releases like this. They have people to catch all the inconsistencies. But it's okay for a 100+ million dollar film because, all gosh, it's a popcorn movie and no one cares if makes any sense at all, if it just has lots of action.

Yeah not good- ST still doesn't have the wide appeal it needs...the first day it came out and in the theatre were mostly people 21 and up, alot much older.
