I imagine this is going to do for Trek what the new Doctor Who did for that series; the old stuff will still be the domain of geeks but the new stuff is going to be a mainstream hit.

Oh man, I REALLY hope that analogy holds true. I wasn't a fan of the older Who's, but I love the new series. They're just so fun, and if the new Trek is similar, I think it'll get a new audience hooked without alienating (most of) the older fans. =)

This movie was a mystery flick showing in Sydney wednesday just past. You had to enter a comp to win tickets to it...of course i thought it was going to be ST or Wolverine.I didnt win tix,but was greatly surprised that it was infact ST!!!!
Upon reading the feedback from ppl that won tix to it i was greatly surprised that they DID enjoy the movie especially as most were more casual movie goers and NOT die hard sci fi/fantasy genre fans like most of us on here!!!
So yea,as a HUGE SW fan,im looking forward to seeing THIS movie!!!!

I had the afternoon off from work today, so I went up to the local Barnes and Noble to read the "Star Trek: Countdown" trade paperback.

I absolutely CAN NOT WAIT FOR THIS MOVIE!!!!

Nero came across as a very real, very motivated, and very sympathetic character. His actions felt very logical (ironic seeing as how he's a Romulan) and not forced at all. I like how his thinking was still rooted in the inherent Romulan paranoia of outsiders and blood feud with Vulcans despite his attempts to be a more "progressive Romulan".

If Eric Bana can capture the essence of the Nero seen in this comic, then he will be among the best Trek villains.

It was also nice to see how the TNG crew fit in with the overall story. The Federation though did come across as a bit nefarious though with their secrecy, and it only helped to make Nero more sympathetic.

The only thing I didn't get was:

Why is Nero so motivated against Kirk? His vendetta is against Spock and the Vulcans he holds personally responsible for the destruction of Romulus and his family's death. Kirk was barely a blip in the prequel comic. It would seem that he should be going after Young Spock in a more direct manner. I can only imagine this will be explained further in the movie.

Thanks for posting your thoughts, Kuzeh. By all accounts, this movie is going to kick all sorts of ass.

I just don't know if I can get over the whole alternate reality thing. Why couldn't they just make it an early TOS story? Why the reboot? I guess I'll find out in two weeks!

To me the reboot makes sense because now they can do things with character that they might not have been able to do later. Especially seeing as though we witness a lot of that initial development in TOS. If the timeline remained the same, they couldn't touch on a lot of stuff... Pon Farr, Spock's parents, developing friendships with Kirk-Mccoy-Spock, mind melds, etc, etc.

I've heard nothing but positives for the flick so I've got high expectations. The thing I am worried about is the inevitable sequel. Has JJ DONE any follow ups as of yet?

Same here. I'm extremely excited for it. Seems like it may actually draw in a LOT of people to the franchise, whereas it's thus far been kind of relegated to an extremely devoted fandom and dismissed by the public at large. I know that when I've been bringing up this movie to a lot of my friends over the past year I've been getting little more than dismissive yawns and eye-rolls. Once the trailers started to roll out, though, and the more that's being revealed, the more people really seem to be coming around. I'm glad, because it looks exceptional.

Usually the antagonist/villain makes or breaks a movie for me in terms of the conflict, and since Nero looks to be following right in the footsteps of Khan in terms of a tangible, motivated, memorable enemy with a sympathetic drive, you can bet I'll be pleased. Takes a lot of cajones to take on Klingons and demand their submission. The prequel comics really did a lot for me, personally. Highly recommend them to anyone who hasn't picked them up yet.

Also, with a sequel I'm not really sure. JJ has earned my trust (huge LOST fan) so I'm confident that he'll do his best to keep the franchise lively, energized, thought-provoking, and still action-packed.

I completely bought Chris Pine as Kirk when I watched the exclusive clip on the official site. The whole cast seems stellar... aside from the occasional annoyed blurb about Chekov. :lol

I still think one of my favorite lines from Kirk (so far) was from one of the preview clips where he's flirting with Uhura and she makes the joke about sleeping with farm animals and he just replies "Well.. thats not all we do." I could see the essence of Kirk and it was believable.

Also, just throwing this out there, but the Narada to me is the coolest ship in the history of Star Trek... by far. Blows that Reman Warbird Scimitar out of the water.

I think the Reman Warbird actually looked like a ship, this Narada looks like a porcupine or some giant bug...still, this movie looks amazing.

What is the name of the track they keep playing with the trailers? Anyone know?

One trailer track is from the last episode of Buffy...think it's called 'Chosen'...the other is by Brian Tyler from his Children of Dune score.
