If you read the initial story ideas for the sequel history will not be completely rewritten but definitely different than what the general fan would know and what the hardcore has loved.

+1

I'm a fan of TOS and TNG, but I could never get into DS9 or Voyager... they all seemed really boring, sterile, and lifeless. Enterprise was really blah for the first 3 seasons, but then it got REALLY good in season 4, but the damage was already done (not to mention the damage done with that final episode... ugh!!!).

But universally, it's pretty uncool to like Trek. I asked a few people to go with me to watch the new flick when it comes out (all girls), but they were all like, "ewwww, star trek is for NERDSSSSS!!!" I really hope the movie gets good word of mouth like Iron Man (another film my female friends had no interest in watching, yet loved when they finally saw it), so it'll attract a newer audience so Trek will be accepted by the mainstream audience.

I'm really getting tired of all the "It's not TOS Trek because the Enterprise isn't made of cardboard sets and the phasers don't look exactly the same and that new Kirk isn't Kirk because he's not the Shat" talk. Spoofs like this shouldn't be the first thing that come to mind when people think of TOS...

You're dating the wrong women! :lol

Man, who cares what females think about these movies..some women just ruin it for me, like say the movie does well..the only thing you will hear from the stereotypical media hungry woman is "chris pine is sexy"..lots of dumb ass women horded to see The Dark Knight because it was "OMG OMG heath ledger! and he died!OMG OMG!" so, lots of non-batman fans made TDK the movie it was i think, i just like how Star Trek was never "cool" to the common person, its what makes it more of a unique interest to me.

You're dating the wrong women too. :lol:lol

I don't know if this was posted yet, but here are some excerpts from Giacchino's score. I REALLY like what I'm hearing (especially the combination of the TOS theme with the new film theme) and I'm definitely going to be picking the CD up when it's released :D:D:D

Hearing that it's the end credits makes me REALLY hopeful that the tones will be there at the very end of the flick before the credits begin to roll.

This is great! Even though he didn't use the Goldsmith or Courage themes much (or at all?), this really sounds like the cheesy '60s action music they used on the show. Like he did for The Incredibles it's a homage and evokes the original but still makes it fresh and original.

Don't think that it was just women who went to see The Dark Knight because of Heath Ledger's death. I'm sure there were men who were curious about that, too.

The Dark Knight was a movie that appealed to a universal audience, not just for Ledger, but because the movie was intelligent, dramatic, and more than your typical "superhero" film. I've had friends love this movie who'd never cared for Batman in the past because they don't like superheroes.

But I've never understood the attitude people have about something going "mainstream". Star Trek needed to be revived and no one should be unhappy if this movie becomes popular and puts Trek on the map again. Trek's been off the map for a long time and it would have just faded away.

And TOS always had women in skimpy clothes for guys to admire, so I think it should be absolutely fine for a girl if she wants to admire Chris Pine while watching the movie.

Thanks for posting this, MooMooEgg...
Giacchino sounds like he did his homework...his music fits in just fine with everything that's come before, including a nice hook of a main theme. Can't wait to hear it in context with the movie...

So I was lucky enough to catch this last night at a preview screening here in San Diego,
and I'll be honest, I've never been a fan of Star Trek at all...
I vaguely remember watching the TV show with my brother, who loves Star Trek.
I don't recall watching the movies, maybe I watched one or two, so as you can tell, Star Trek was never huge in my life, I'm more of a Star Wars fan...but anyway...
here are my thoughts...
Heavy spoilers ahead...

The movie isn't a prequel/sequel or re-imagination...
it's actually an
alternate reality, so, even though it works great as a big plot element, since this is sort of the beginning of Star trek, it kind of tells us that all of the later (in time) stuff like the TV series/ Movies and all that, somewhat never happened...or won't happen ever again, because now the crew is living in an alternate reality.
I know, heavy stuff, but maybe once you see it it'll make sense...

With that said, I know nothing about most of these guys backgrounds, I know about Spock and I loved how Quinto played him....
I don't want to put too many spoilers, but in a nutshell, this movie was great!
All the actors did an awesome job IMO, except for one character that was annoying as hell...Chekov... oh my... at first it was funny, but after a while it's as bad as Dracula's brides in Van helsing... or close to Jar Jar actually....

Anyway, lots of action, twists, deep plots and mind boggling plot elements here...
Liked it a lot, and would definitely recommend it!
The SFX were amazing, and the overall look was great!

For the Trekkies out there, Star Trek is back... with a vengeance!!!
BTW, when the credits were rolling I heard a guy say:
"Man, this was awesome, George Lucas needs to take some notes!!"...
:D

I have to second Kuzeh - I've never gotten the appeal of Trek but this movie is terrific. I don't know if it's enough to make me sit down with the older stuff but I'm definitely in for a sequel. I imagine this is going to do for Trek what the new Doctor Who did for that series; the old stuff will still be the domain of geeks but the new stuff is going to be a mainstream hit.

I don't know enough about the original show to know if the Trek fans will like it, but I thought it was great as a newcomer.

All i am going to say is..no matter how awesome this movie is, Star Trek and Star Wars are two very different things and should never be compared at all..Star Wars is for kids/adults(awesome imagery with par script) and i think Trek is for young adults/adults(again great imagery with great scripts most of the time)..i mean in a sense that Trek is way way more technical then Star Wars ever was.
