Just got back from watching it, and I bet there's nothing I can say that hasn't been said. It's an awesome movie! Loved all the phrases and throwbacks to the originals (i.e. "Are you out of your Vulcan mind?!", which was in 'Wrath of Khan') :lol:D
I can't wait to watch it again!

Well folks, Star Trek is number 1 with an estimated $76.5 million including Thursdays early takes. In other news: Wolverine's take dropped 68%.

No surprise really, but the big thing will be Trek's numbers next week. Wolverine's drop is no shock though. If I weren't such a big Hugh Jackman Wolverine fan and that movie was approached like a stand alone, it is too weak to sustain numbers in the theaters. I think Trek should do nicely.

It should... But with Terminator arriving in theatres it'll most definitely be bumped to #2.

Eventually, but it's got one more week to stay at the top. I don't know how much of a competitor Terminator will be, that looks to be a very dark film, I don't forsee much humor or anything. Trek's got action, adventure, humore, romance. Pretty much everything you could want in a story to draw in a wide audience. Terminator will probably hold most appeal with Terminator fans and reach little outside of that after opening weekend. Transformers 2 will probably be the highest grossing film of the summer though.

I don't really get into box office takes, but I must say I am thrilled to hear Star Trek did so well. The entire franchise was resting on this movie and it is a tremendous relief to hear that Trek is still viable. :banana

My interest in Trek faded with each new series post-TNG, but I think this movie's success shows that with Trek, it's not enough to just be hopping around the galaxy and fancy effects, you need strong characters and stories, and to me that's where DSP, Voyager, and I never even watched Enterprise, fell off. The characters were neat, but not as interesting and engaging like OS and TNG crews. Kirk-McCoy-Spock is a great character relationships to follow, Data and Geordi seeking humanity for data was an interesting story line, Picard was a well acted and created captain. Sisko was ok, Janeway was weak.

Abrams' reboot isn't redesigning what makes Star Trek work, it's bringing it back. Which is why I'd love to see it spin into a series rather than movies, I'm so into what he's done, I want weekly doses of it, not 2 hours ever 2-3 years.

If it happens, it wouldn't be with the same cast.

Tv series based on the reboot? No thanks. Even if Abrams were attached in any capacity, we'd just be retreading down the same line the ST series has been on the last 40 years. Like Pitu said, keep this on the big screen.

The effects, and everything were a big part as well...and it wouldnt be in the show. So no TV series.

Plus, most TV shows never come up with a story, they just keep making new ones without an end. Terminator comes to mind. Had a OK start, got better, set up SO much...but then midway through just created a new boring story. Didnt work.

and lastly, by the end of the movie, i did not feel like kirk had truly earned his place as captain of the enterprise. it just seemed too early. sure, he's a hotshot, but come on, a guy just fresh out of starfleet academy being handed command of the federation's flagship? it just reeks of completism, meaning the names "kirk" and "captain of the enterprise" are what's expected by joe public, so they just shoehorned it in. they should've kept his promotion for the sequel.

I was thinking that his promotion was too quick too - but wasn't the entire fleet destroyed at Vulcan? In wartime promotions happen quickly and the fact that most of the fleet is gone, makes it more believable that a green cadet who has just saved Earth from total destruction could get command of the flagship.

On another matter, I hadn't thought of Q, but he'd be a perfect foil for Nuevo Kirk - Q loves playing with reality and time - and the reboot is something he'd love to mess with - so I can see him introducing Kirk to the Borg rather than waiting for Picard.

I just got back from seeing it! I loved it! I wish I could see it in IMAX!

The only thing I didn't care for was.....

Putting Uhura and Spock together. Meh....

Kirk said he would be captain in 3 years, and he did it. If I remember correctly, there were 7 ships going to Vulcan. I wouldn't think that would be all of Starfleet, but considering the time frame, it could've been. I know I missed alot of things watching this because I was too busy looking for little things in the background. :lol

There are so many possiblities with this crew now. Anything could happen!

If they would come up with a entirely new series, I would be okay with it, but not one based on this crew. I'm surprised they haven't come up with a Starfleet Acadamy series yet.

The promotion was a fluke, playing with fate. Pike made him first officer to the shock of everyone around including Spock because he was trying to push him for that "dare to be great" moment that he was pushing him towards back on Earth. Spock Prime was shocked that Kirk wasn't Captain and so gave him the key to getting Spock to emote. After that being First Captain it was a position of opportunity but through the battle and the mission showing how strong of a captain he could be it only makes sense to keep the team together especially since Pike was promoted as well.

The funny thing is we get a Farmboy from Tatooine who is an okay pilot gets involved in an attack on the Empire, comes back from a successful run and all of a sudden in the next film is Commander Skywalker, same with Han. People are cool with those swift military promotions and Kirk? Oh no. :lol He was already in Starfleet trying to pass the exam to be a Captain, its one foot out the door already. Its just the mission simply negated the need for passing the exam.
