Nick Fury became black...but totally different character and could get away with it....Bond faces super/rich Super Villains that I think a black man IRL just would not fit in...many of those rich types want nothing to do with many kinds...the common ground for everyone would be money...I think for the time being it would be a tough sell unless he matched up with a certain type of villain that fits in ....Many of the older Villains would not take a Black Bond seriously and it would have been reflected by the Movie Audience...Maybe one day..who knows...Hey with whats going on Bond might be gay one day...but that would be another debate and a big one!..LOL....Bottom line it would be a tough sell and interesting experiment if they did do it...JMHO

And what older villains are you talking about? Bond doesn't operate in the cold war of the fifties and early sixties anymore, so what do the older villains have to do with anything?

The fact is if you change Bond from what he is suppose to be, then you might as well create a new character. If you make Bond anything other than a Womanizing British agent then you cease to have the character. It would make better sense to have Doctor Who go black than Bond.

I don't think making a modern Bond black changes anything regarding being a womanizing british agent...

Oh god.. it was only a matter of time before this turned into a racial discussion which ironically is my exact point of why the whole idea of turning Bond black is just stupid. It would just be a cheap trick to stimulate controversy and buzz.

I'll tell you the ONE and ONLY one reason it could work. it could also help improve the overall stigma and continuity of all things Bond. It was tossed around but never came to be; James Bond is not a man, James Bond is a code name and one that is earned and designated to a very special and qualified MI6 Agent. A mantle that is passed down when the previous dies or retires.

But even then I'd argue he could not be black, Hispanic, American, whatever... The character of James bond should remain just that a character. Caucasian, over 6 feet, fashionable and good looking, wealthy and womanizing, charming and skilled, hair clean cut. This should be the character of James Bond and MI6 can use this character for the correct missions, one that calls for work that involves seduction and the right Bond-esque pizazz.

Basically I dont think the world is ready yet for a black Bond, or gay or not british etc, etc.....that's all I'm saying...It would be very tricky in my opinion to make a black bond work for the audiences...They would have to be very very careful how they do it...Bond is more complex then say Nick Fury, or Kingpin or lots of other guys around...and racist is becoming one of those words that many folks love to take out of their back pocket and throw around...no offense...Next we will have a black Santa movie...Can it happen?...yes, but the transition has to be done carefully...I would love to see a white Shaft...Just kidding...but I hope you can see that this could be a neverending topic...There are some roles that are very hard to replace...Sometimes things just dont fit in too...All legit questions in my book...period

I'd have no problem with a black Bond. I think the defining characteristics of the character are applicable to any race, as long as he is British.

I have no problem with a black Bond. My problem is more in the realm of I love period movies, and I would much rather see Bond go back to his roots fighting communism in the Post-WWII Cold War. And if that was the case, to be historically accurate, I doubt a black man would have been hired. Just historical fact.

Also - I don't care for Idris Elba. I hated his ****** character in The Office. I haven't seen him in anything else, however.

I also agree with those who feel that Bond has gone too far from his roots. Casino Royale was a great movie, and a decent Bond flick, but Craig's Bond's modus operandi is too far gone from who the Bond character was supposed to be. And we seem to be going further and further away from Ian Fleming's character.

Understood...Bottom line...When one makes such a big change like that you have to consider all implications of what could happen...not easy in this particular case for many to handle if Bond was black...just my opinion of course, but I think I'm right...nothing is just Black and White anymore although some in the world try to convey it that way.....No pun intended.

I think the fact that Daniel Craig could do bond and a very good bond at that, while staying true to the character in the books (Ian Fleming never saw a Bond movie i believe) proves that Elba could own it. The world is more than ready for a black bond

Being black doesn't change the character he can still be fashionable and good looking, wealthy, womanizing, charming, skilled and clean cut. James Bond is James Bond and being black wouldn't effect that.

Granted but it better be done right and not just to appease the young viewers...It has to appeal to the older viewer too...This is a old franchise not just young guys............That quote about James Bond is James Bond and black would not effect that is easier said than done and strictly a matter of opinion..

Ian Fleming did indeed see a bond movie. After seeing Connery as bind he had such a hard time seeing anyone else as Bond he went back and altered the characters background to be of Scottish desent originally

But I am not sure anybody really associated Will Smith's Jim West to the original. It was a totally different character and film making it unrecognizable to the original. That is what would happen to Bond. It would Bond in name only. Just make a new character.

In my honest opinion if that was done to Bond...I think there would be a bad response to it unless the film came out perfect...I know when Craig became Bond lots of folks became upset...But when Casino Royale came out everybody loved him and he became the closest thing to a Connery type Bond(License to Kill was the only other maybe close to it)...Craig was loved because Casino Royal was close to perfect...end of story...If Quantum was Craigs first then you would have heard more complaints...The Wild West many I know who remembered the old series refused to go see it...I saw it but as entertainment and I just knew it would be a fun film...but that's it...I still love the original Conrad series first...Many of the younger crowd do not even know the old series as well as history so I could see how it appeased them somewhat...Bond is an institution!...an old one at that and should be made to try to conform to all audiences...That is why I think it is tricky to change him to a black Bond....He has a huge following worldwide!...I'm not saying it cannot be done...but it has to done really right or folks will be turned off

Why is this even a discussion....Fleming NEVER intended 007 to be black , why mess with the formula that HE created

A black Bond is not and never will be the same character , its that simple.

Truth is that Fleming disliked Connery after seeing "Dr No" but warmed up to him eventually. He prolly would think that some Bonds like Moonraker wasnt the Bond he created (but would shut up cuz it would be financially stupid to trash talk his income , hed get a good piece of the pie I bet)
