Well no, it proves that Gone With the Wind performed better than Avatar has so far in real dollar terms.

I'd like to see an apples to apples comparison rather than the 70 years of rereleases padding GWTW's numbers. Anyone know what GWTW actually made during its first run in 1939? Because I'm quite curious to see how mighty those "adjusted" dollars become next to 1.8 billion (and counting).

I suggest reading the article I posted. GWTW wasn't even released on 200 screens.

Look, Avatar is a good movie, but let's not make it out to be some kind of God send of a movie. Truth is.....it's only top boxoffice money maker of all time right now because people paid a hell of alot more per ticket to see it. That's not taking away from the movie, it's just fact.

It can be whatever it is in your eyes. I haven't seen it yet and at this point, I really don't care if I do.

I guess we will know the truth when the next big 3D release comes out.

What does that have to do with anything?

She said the only reason it is top box office is because of the extra cost per ticket. So if we take another movie that is a blockbuster type movie that is fully 3D, we will see what kind of hype it gets and how much money that will bring it.

Yes, Avatar has higher ticket prices but people are going to see it more than once for one reason or another, so the whole tickets cost more than standard tickets is not the only reason for top box office.

Which may be true if we strip away the 3D surcharge even without accounting for inflation (remember ticket prices have risen an average of 56% since Titanic even without accounting for those surcharges). But it becomes a basic math and logic question: can Avatar have a higher box office than the usual 3D blockbuster while still only achieving the top spot because of 3D surcharges? The answer obviously is yes.

In other words, it's possible Avatar is a massive success compared to standard blockbusters, but pushed to the nominal top spot because of 3D surcharges.

I don't think we'll see a similar box office for a few years, partly because a lot of big films won't be released in 3D and partly because a significant percentage of the buzz for Avatar is your first new 3D experience. I suspect there will be many people who don't find it worth the money and spring for 2D Alice in Wonderland tickets.

However, inflation alone means there will always be a new box office king every so often. Just wait until it costs $20 a ticket to go to the movies ... and that's not far off from the $18 I paid to see Avatar in IMAX 3D. Twice what I'm going to pay to see Iron Man. Same bum on seat, double the haul.

I was referring to the cost of tickets NOW compared to years ago. The article states that ticket prices are up 56% since Titanic was released.

I never pay any attention to what a movie makes at the box office because the ticket prices go up every year. Of course a big movie is gonna make a ton of money, and probably more than the big movie of the year last year.

Gotcha.

I find it interesting to follow regardless of rising ticket prices. Something to do and is entertaining.

Also went and saw this movie again last night with a friend who never saw. He really liked it and surprising there were a decent amount of people in the theater.

Nothing wrong with that!

Glad to hear there were a decent amount of people in the theater. I saw Legion last night and it was so empty there was almost an echo...

The Imax 3D is still selling out every night where I am.

The article didn't state how much GWTW made during its first full theatrical run. The only thing that ever gets posted is its box office take after 50 years of rereleases.

Look, Avatar is a good movie,

How would you know?

Yep, pretty impressive that Titanic managed to stay on top for 12 years. Who would have guessed in 1997 that it would weather not one but three new Star Wars releases especially since, as you said, inflation favored the prequels with each successive release.

I think what is getting mixed up here is popularity and actual box office. No doubt, Gone With the Wind is king in actual box office when you adjust for inflation, but who knows what is the most popular film ever.

On this website called the Numbers, it shows you top grossing movies due to inflation. Star wars is #1 i believe, but even with inflation for Avatar, it still has a LONG time to go, with it still being #1 for 6 weeks in a row, it will be in theaters for a long time, only time will tell.
