Right, but I think all the CGI will hurt it's chances.
I'm not sure. Would it qualify for best animated picture?
Even if it did it would have no chance against Up which is also a much better film.

Not sure why people think this doesn't have a chance. Yea the odds are probably against it but I think it is definitely plausible that this movie could win best picture at the Oscars and Cameron could win best director.
Also on the topic of crazy Avatar fans...the same ____ happened with the new Star Wars Trilogy, same ____ happened with LotR, Twilight and now Avatar. I am sure most of you have fallen into one of those categories before.
There were PLENTY of weirdos who wanted to live in Middle earth.

I did feel that the effects in District 9 were great and one could argue that they were more seamless than Avatar, but there is no way in hell Avatar is not taking that category.
I think so. When you invent new technology and take CG to a level never seen before where CG animation has the detail and emotion that they conveyed in the film-I think that alone wins it.
District 9 was grittier, and maybe a bit more realistic with lighting but that was achieved with a lot of shadows and creatures that lacked facial emotion. I thought the robot suit pretty cool but I dont really see it being close to the level that Avatar achieved.
I'm not sure I agree with that. The best Special Effects EVER? Come now.
The Aliens were a lot more sympthetic then the Na'Vi...they got really annoying when they would open their mouths and scream AHHHHHHHHUWAAAHHHHHH
I hated that.
The Prawns were awesome.
I take so much offense to that. Because I am a Prawn. Racist.
I recommend clicking on the Avatar discussion thread here:

Generally speaking some of the best film discussion on the net can be found at hometheaterforum.com. Nowhere near the "opinion as fact" derailing you see here. Avatar's film merits are discussed at length and while there are certainly differences of opinion I think you'll find very interesting takes on the movie's story and cultural impact.
