Not sure why people think this doesn't have a chance. Yea the odds are probably against it but I think it is definitely plausible that this movie could win best picture at the Oscars and Cameron could win best director.

Heck, with it winning at the Golden Globes, winning BP at the Oscars isn't really a stretch.

Also on the topic of crazy Avatar fans...the same ____ happened with the new Star Wars Trilogy, same ____ happened with LotR, Twilight and now Avatar. I am sure most of you have fallen into one of those categories before.

There were PLENTY of weirdos who wanted to live in Middle earth.

I'm sure that's true, but I don't recall in all my years reading LotR message boards, fans being depressed, wanting to commit suicide or not wanting to make love to your wife because she wasn't Arwen.

You're always gonna have obsessive fans, no matter what the movie. This just happens to be the big movie right now.

It's the Oscar track record. Sure it has a chance, but......Oscars are a bit more stuffy than Golden Globes.

What I meant by saying about Cameron having pull in Hollywood is, would he use that pull to win?

Agreed. ____ that ____. Pandora sucks. Its scary as hell...

I Dont even know what would really be it's biggest competition?
Hurt Locker? What else came out this year that was REALLY good?
Basterds?
I just don't remember that many super good ones.
We will see I guess.
Nominations on Tuesday?

I did feel that the effects in District 9 were great and one could argue that they were more seamless than Avatar, but there is no way in hell Avatar is not taking that category.

I think so. When you invent new technology and take CG to a level never seen before where CG animation has the detail and emotion that they conveyed in the film-I think that alone wins it.

District 9 was grittier, and maybe a bit more realistic with lighting but that was achieved with a lot of shadows and creatures that lacked facial emotion. I thought the robot suit pretty cool but I dont really see it being close to the level that Avatar achieved.

The Aliens were a lot more sympthetic then the Na'Vi...they got really annoying when they would open their mouths and scream AHHHHHHHHUWAAAHHHHHH

I hated that.

The Prawns were awesome.

I'm not sure I agree with that. The best Special Effects EVER? Come now.

The snow scene on Hoth that was stop motion animation is still probably one of my favorite and impressive scenes ever on screen...although it might be because of how it was achieved that is so cool to me.

No offfense but the prawns were punks.

Avatar a rip off??? Anyone see this?? Thoughts? I mean you can see a "remake" of the Pocahantas story easily but this looks legit too!

Avatar rips off of everything. Its the least original movie ever made.

But its alright. It's still good. Just horribly cliche.

I recommend clicking on the Avatar discussion thread here:

Generally speaking some of the best film discussion on the net can be found at hometheaterforum.com. Nowhere near the "opinion as fact" derailing you see here. Avatar's film merits are discussed at length and while there are certainly differences of opinion I think you'll find very interesting takes on the movie's story and cultural impact.

thanks for the link :peace
