My Wife loves Avatar. And she has even said to me it's one of the best movies she has ever seen.
I really enjoyed it, but I would put quite a few movies ahead of it if I was doing a list of my favourite movies.
I have no problem with people who love this movie, even the ones who enjoy dressing up like Na'Vi. If it makes them happy, rather than depressed, I see nothing wrong with that.
The real test for this movie will be a year after the DVD has come out, will it still be as popular? Or will most Avatar fans have moved on?
My guess is that Avatar will probably produce a sequel that will surpass it on every level. Then the Avatar universe will most likely have garnered Die hard fans on the same level as Star Wars.

having seen it finally a couple weeks ago, Im surprised that I have no real desire to watch it again.
The only aspect about the film I want to see again would be the 3D effects.

It did make me sit down and watch Final Fantasy again and I have to say I like the story line to that one much more.... :monkey1

Avatar rips off of everything. Its the least original movie ever made.
But its alright. It's still good. Just horribly cliche.

:lol Not quite.

Whilst the storyline is generic there are some things that were somewhat original......well i hadn't seen them in a film before.:D

Hero falls for native girl and then actually physically becomes one of them.

The planet and wildlife rises up and rebels against the invaders.

Whilst i liked the storyline i agree it could have been way better but i guess they were spending loads of time on the effects.Look forward to the second one having more depth to the story now that they have the technology down pat.

Question. Can Jakes Na'Vi 'avatar' procreate (was it even thought about?), would the scientists have gone as far as making it possible, it's hardly their primary concern in just making him able to survive and operate, maybe even 'infiltrate, they wouldn't have expected him to 'infiltrate' that deeply.:naughty

Just thought this might 'impact' on the sequels, it's the kind of detail that the novelisation might go into, but I can't be arsed to read it.

Anyone, anyone?

I'm betting yes, though they may not actually come out and talk about it. He was capable of having sex, so I'm sure he'll end up having a child in the sequel.

Predator. Changing one big aspect of the plot creates a whole new idea.

and i'm too sleepy to think of more, so i'll get back to you on that one....

How is predator original? How is it any different than Alien? Jungle vs Spaceship?
Or any movie with big scary creature stalking and hunting the good guy humans?

I'm trying to make the point, that there is no point in arguing about Avatar's story or originality at this point.
The ORIGINAL thing about Avatar - the ultra advanced CGI and 3D.

I bet years from now, the next movie to do killer 3D and CGI, people will be saying - this sucks man, it's just like Avatar...people are just seeing it because of the 3D and effects. lol

Ok i'll bite, what movie do you find original.

There are tons of terrific, original films. Just off the top of my head...

Fight Club
Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind
The Elephant Man
(and any David Lynch film)
Citizen Kane
Memento
Seven Samurai
RAN
Vertigo
The Fisher King
Dr. Strangelove
The Shawshank Redemption
Close Encounters of The 3rd Kind
The Royal Tenenbaums
Moulin Rouge
A History of Violence
Blade Runner
Fargo

And, to add even a Cameron sci-fi film on the list... The Abyss.

And in several ways, District 9 is more original than Avatar, though it isn't exactly entirely original, either (the theme is quite similar to lesser films like "Alien Nation").

I dunno, I sort of dread the sequels. I loved Avatar, but I don't think the story needs to be continued.

I am sure if you did enough research some of those movies, if not most were derived from some other story.

2 million more bucks and Avatar beats domestic box office.

BTW, after adjusted box office-its number 21 on the list all time. I dont know if thats just adjusted from inflation or taking into account the premium on the glasses.

At that point you would surely be splitting pubic hairs. The point is, all of those films are more original and not nearly as derivative as many others.

Are you going to sit there and tell me that Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind is not a more original work than Avatar? Come now.

If you want to be technical, sure, "nothing is original". But the argument is relative. Some movies are absolutely unique and much more original than others. And some are absolutely more derivative than others.
