Those of you who didn't like Avatar:

Did you like Dances With Wolves?

Just curious.
Once again, for the record, I really liked Avatar. Saw it twice. May even see it again!
The special effects, 3D, realization of Pandora- all of it totally brilliant and worthy of receiving every appropriate award. But the script, dialogue, acting and character development is not so brilliant.

And I've said it before and I'll say it again:
If this movie had been filmed on an island on earth with no effects, would it really be that freakin' good???

I, IN MY HUMBLE OPINION, think not.

Wow.

That was really well done. Or is done well?

If it was set on contemporary Earth and had no effects, this thread would be about as long as the Sideshow Freaks thread for Hotel Rwanda. Set it two centuries ago and maybe it'd be as long as the Sideshow Freaks thread for The New World.

Never saw Dances With Wolves, and I am in no hurry to do so. I didn't like Pocahontas, for what its worth.

I don't think I'd argue that the characters were flat simply because they were computer generated. I've found quite a few memorable and relatable characters in Pixar movies.

The characters were flat because they lacked personality or depth aside from simplistic caricatures that can be captured in once line blurbs. The bloodthirsty marine commander, the noble indian chief, the wise indian priestess, the feisty but curious indian daughter, the greedy corporate stooge, the marine-turned-nature-buff protagonist, the gung-ho marine polit that sees the error of her ways ... blah, blah. They're all one-dimensional caricatures that could've been written in a screenwriting 101 class.

People that like the movie rarely claim to like it because of its character depth. As a spectacle, it was fine. The story was lame, and the characters were flat.

basically you're sayin it's all show & no go? :rotfl:rotfl

The story in Avatar is essentially Dances With Wolves. When it came out it was my favorite movie for years. It had zero CGI. Basically all the arch-typical characters (what you call "simplistic caricatures") that you have a problem with in Avatar are all represented in DWW.

IMHO, Avatar delivered these arch-typical characters in a brilliant way. Not only did it serve the DWW story to a generation that never saw DWW, but it also told the story more profoundly.

For me, the CGI was just a bonus.

I'm curious what people feel makes a "deep" character. Some would say Tom Stall aka Joey from A History of Violence is a character with a lot of depth. For me personally, I found his character to be very flat as compared to Maria Bello's character. It wasn't that she had some sort of deep background, but her character was the most affected by Tom's actions. Sure, Tom is a brutal killer who tries to start a new life (double life movies have been done before) but the character with real depth is Bello's because of what she goes through.

I felt for jake sully, and i loved neytir maybe its a difference in opnion but i loved the characters and i was waiting for them to suceed and i love the chemistry between thw two characters.

Well, yeah, you want them to win in the end, because the film makes you want it. You dont want it because you want it.

I couldn't disagree more. They gave you the whole back story of Dunbars character. The attempted suicide, the solitude that follows, and all of that. Sully's brother dies he gets a job. LOL! That's about all you get.

ok dude if you dont agree with me thats ok, but i could care less what you think i wanted the navi to win and i like the characters. Stop making excuses as to why i wanted them to win.

Totally agree! Avatar was amazing. Characters were awesome. Best film of the year. Thats MY opinion. Take it or leave it. What's the point in fighting over it? Get over yourselves, it's all opinion.

Indeed. It seems that those who claim they didn't like it are just doing it to be in an elite club. Kind of like those who seek out super weird music because no one else likes it. Then they claim that anything popular is just predictable drivel.

"Disliking" what most people love doesn't make you smarter or better than anyone else.

If you really didn't like the movie, then fine, not everyone has to like the same thing. I just don't like seeing people implying that in order to like it you have to be some kind of subhuman.
