"Let's just call it out. Let's have a public discussion. That's what movies are supposed to do, you know, you can have a mindless entertainment film that doesn't affect anybody. I wasn't interested in that."

"I'm less interested in making money for the movie and more interested in saving the world that my children are going to inhabit.”

This is what makes Cameron a colossal d-bag. He actually believes his movie is more important than it actually is. :duh

I mean, if you're going to try and make a movie to "save the world", at least make something original. :lol

If I was using newly reissued $1000 bills to jerk off with I would be the same way.

Yea , just curious, whats orignal to you. Star wars ?

It depends on what your definition of "original" is. Some defend AVATAR by saying that "nothing is truly original", but that's just a straw man argument. If you can remain relative, tons and tons of movies have been more original than AVATAR. Pretty much every other film in the Best Picture category this year, for starters. And on and on and on. And, yes, I'd say even STAR WARS was more original, especially for its time. It was certainly derivative in its own right, but at least not from obvious other media elements from its own era.

I'd like to ask Cameron exactly what it is about AVATAR (the film itself, not the manufactured phenomenon) that he thinks could help "save the world". There is not a single message in the film that is new and/or transcends anything we've already seen and heard a dozen times, and recently.

duhhh hotshot, obviously if you can ride a huge red dragon you can save the world.... :lecture

He could donate that $2 Billion to charity for a start--of course he wont

But I still find it funny that fund raisers aren't making ____ when movies constantly make like $100 million in a week.

Probably because people are selfish and would rather spend the $10 to go to the movies then donate it.

:lecture :lol

And this is also why I think I'll be perfectly happy with my barebones/no-idiot-commentary Blu-Ray of the film next month. It is EXACTLY what the SW PT unsuccessfully aspired to be. And for that I have the utmost respect and gratitude toward Cameron. But my God at least Lucas knew that his movies were just fairy tale entertainment. Even the original SW, which really did change the world in a sense, was never celebrated as such by its creator.

I agree with Cameron that Avatar wasn't mindless entertainment but lets not get carried away here. :lol

Why's that funny? :dunno

Take for instance--that big celebrity TV thing raising money for Haiti--it got $50 million

Avatar made several times that much that week.

Not that going to Avatar is bad, it's just that considering if JC wants to change the world, he could do a lot better than just putting a message in a film.

Found this Sculpture of Neytiri done by Spectre Studios:

That was $50 million for ONE fund raiser for Haiti! They got a ton more than that. My school, with only K and 1st grade, raised $130 just in spare change for a week. Believe me, people are giving for all kinds of causes. The US is the most generous country in the world.

My daughter is watching The Secret of Nimh right now. I think James Cameron has seen it too. :)

Check this out:

The hero (Jake Sully/Ms. Brisby the mouse) loses their other half (twin/spouse) right before the movie starts and are therefore thrust into the deceased family member's world, a world for which they are ill prepared.

The hero must prove themselves to a species twice as tall as them (Na'vi/rats of Nimh). Through expiriments of human scientists the Na'vi/rats can now speak English.

The hero manages to ride a chaotic flying beast (Banshee/Jeremy the crow) and has an early encounter with a thanator/monstrous cat that chases him/her through thick brush and roots until the hero escapes over the side of a waterfall.

Later on a giant harvester threatens to destroy Brisby's home/racial trees until two tiny heroes climb onto it and sabotage it.

The hero develops a special bond with one Na'vi/rat in particular (Neytiri/Justin).

A final battle ensues and before the movie ends the heroes must first defeat the giant command ship/cat called "Dragon."
