Re: I saw AVATAR in 3D!

A good portion of the military doesn't join because they "want to kill people". They join because they legitimately want to try and help their country and others.

Unfortunately, the brainwashing that follows after enlistment is what turns them into killing machines who have no purpose or training other than killing other living beings to accomplish the goals of the people giving them orders. It's drilled and pounded into their brains to unquestioningly follow the orders given to them by their superiors, no matter the cost. Their willingness to do what they think helps their country is manipulated by the smooth talkers in power who will do anything to keep that power and/or obtain more.

Sure, there are people who enlist just so they can kill people that aren't like them. The same can be said for any job that puts you in a position of power over people. The real problem is the leadership and government that has no qualms about killing scores of people to achieve what they want. The only thing to blame the soldiers for is lacking the ability to say no or resist the brainwashing and see through the facade of "do it for your country!" for what it really is.

Avatar was amazing.

Holy crap! That was actually an excellent post! 100% agreed.

Re: I saw AVATAR in 3D!

What kind of post is that...:google:duh

If you've seen the movie, it's relevant, because the soldiers in avatar just blindly follow orders, even if it means murdering a race of beings. I wouldn't draw the same conclusion about real life and the noble causes I feel our our own military are trying to achieve. War is ugly, wether in real life or on big screen.

You are a ????ing moron! Thank you! :lecture

A moron with extensive familial history in and connections to the military. Also one that spent the first 20 years of his life eating, sleeping and breathing the military life, and one who's seen what it does to people when it's done sucking the life out of them. So you're welcome.

One thing that bugged me was that James Horner reused his own music from Enemy at the Gates... but oh well.

Yes I knew I have heard what I heard during the tree scene correct.... Enemy at the gates is my favorite sniper movie ... And have seen it plenty of times so when I heard the score during that scene it sounds just like enemy at the gates... ;)

Thank you, I was thinking the same thing. Funny how these people against the military don't realize that it's because of them that we are a free people and don't live under a dictatorship. I also have several ex soldiers who report to me and all have families and are generally very good people who aren't the killing machines being portrayed in this devolving thread. The only exception would be a marine, and he did fit that brainwashed stereo type, but I think he was like that before he entered. There's a few bad people in any group and in the military, if you're psycho, you are likely to be kicked out.

Edit: unless you're a Muslim radical on jihad, then it's too politically incorrect to get kicked out

Enemy At the Gates IMO is one my least favorites.I loved the action in the movie,Rachel Weisz is sexy BUT!,WTF is it with the English accents? they're RUSSIANS!! FFS!.

Re: I saw AVATAR in 3D!

I never once said I was against the military. I'm not against the soldiers who enlist because they legitimately want to help make the world a better place.

I'm against the upper echelon of the military and the government who views soldiers as expendable grunts and, when they're lucky to make it home from a war they sent them to, they treat them as fourth-class citizens and refuse to give them the help or care they need as a result of the situations they were put in by their superiors. Look at the denial and subsequent acknowledgment, 40 years after the fact, of the effects of Agent Orange on the soldiers and natives that were exposed to it during the Vietnam War. Look at the denial of and outright refusal to aid those who are affected by Gulf War Syndrome. Look at the denial and ridicule posed toward those who had PTSD because of their experiences, only to subsequently have it be acknowledged long after many, many people had killed themselves over something the military refused to admit existed.

I am 100% behind the soldiers who sign up to protect and serve their country. It's the people who manipulate and subsequently discard those who gave everything they had for them that I take issue with. How many veterans are now homeless because they came back to nothing when their country called on them? How many are sick yet receive little to no V.A. benefits because the bureaucrats refuse to spend 5 more minutes on paperwork? How about my brother's dad, who was drafted at 18 into Vietnam despite the fact that he couldn't read, did 3 tours in the bush, and had to kill a 5 year old Vietnamese child who was booby-trapped by the Viet Cong one day when he made his daily visit to the soldiers' camp because they would give him candy? He's lucky to see $400 a month from the government, despite the fact that they destroyed his life before it even began. Or my father, whose alcoholism was ignored and oftentimes encouraged by his superior officers because they didn't give a damn so long as he kept buying them rounds, and his domestic violence against my mother and I swept under the rug by his COs until they couldn't cover up what I had to do to him when 18 years of it boiled over?

There's a serious problem in the military, and the soldiers are the only good thing about the entire system. You want to call me a moron? Fine. But I suggest you educate yourself beyond what you see in Kid Rock/Dale Earnhardt Jr. National Guard commercials.

My part in this discussion's over.

You are talking a more meaningfull cause here WWII, where we all had to unite as one to fight the Nazi's, they had plans for world domination.I would have fought them but, todays war? no sir..i am not signing up to drive over a IED and thats it for me..F' that!, i could see if Iraq was ACTUALLY a threat to the world but, they never were..Hell, Iran is more of a threat! North Korea FFS!.

That being said though, no disrespect to the men and women from America,Canada,UK,Poland,Italy etc.. in the service stationed in the middle east. You really got some huge balls to be trying to make a difference over there in that big mess.I also feel for the families of both the soldiers and the innocent civilians that die in war.

Re: I saw AVATAR in 3D!

what do u mean by ignorant?

do you mean obama send 30000 more troops to afghan to use as a leverage to negotiate with the taliban, i understand why the country have to do it, what i don't understand is why people want to do it, it is a job to kill, if you have a choice will you become a butcher.

i think Avatar's hidden meaning beside being a great entertainment is disgust of war for benefit, the metal code for oil , well, the army code for private company like balckwater or well army.

I would say this post is exactly what he meant by ignorant. Your BS belongs in the sandbox.

Re: I saw AVATAR in 3D!

:lol That was so easy. Congrats. :) Man i'm good at bringing out the Hitler in people. I need a pat on my back.

Whatever point you're trying to make here is lost on me. Sorry, my redneck inbred brain just can't comprehend defending the actions of a terrorist.

two people I work with have served in Iraq and are very proud of the advances they've made in that country. It will still take more time, more than the public is willing to wait, but according to their first hand perspective, the situation over there was improved by removing Sadam and bringing about free elections. Again, this is what I've been told by people that have been there and seen how bad the situation was when first setting foot on Iraqi soil. You won't hear this sort of positive feedback about the advances made in Iraq on the mainstream media, so don't only believe the perspective that the "news" reports.
