Re: I saw AVATAR in 3D!
Copy/pasted from another board, here's my thoughts on Avatar, to help get things back on track.
I didn't really want to go this morning, but I went to see it so I would have an informed opinion when I bashed it afterwards. I've just, since day one, had no interest in the movie and everything I saw on TV just reinforced the fact that I thought it looked boring and stupid.
It's my favorite movie of the year. Was it the best? No. Did I enjoy it more than anything else I've seen this year? By leaps and bounds. The CGI was just...I don't know how to describe it without repeating everything else that's been said. It was incredible. The characters had the facial tics of their human counterparts, they never seemed like they were just CG creations, and they somehow found a way to beat the uncanny valley. I don't know how they did it, but they achieved it. It was just breathtaking.
They also, very smartly, kept the interaction between live action and CGI to a minimum. One of the problems with CGI is when you try to make it believable within a real world, it just never works. There's always something, be it interaction with the environment or other characters, that tells you that you're watching a false creation. The Na'vi were so well integrated into the world of Pandora that you felt like you were watching real creatures on a real world. They were interacting with each other and the world in a real way. That's why I think it worked so well for me...you never had to pretend you were watching a real person interact with something that wasn't there.
Pandora itself...my God. There was more imagination put into this movie than anything I've seen in years. Everything was just so strange and beautiful...it was like Willy Wonka's factory...just pure imagination.
As far as the story goes, look...it's been said before, you know what you're getting with Cameron. I'm not a huge fan of his. The Abyss is fantastic, Aliens is enjoyable...Titanic? No thank you. But again, it's Cameron...so you know what you're heading into when you buy the ticket. Does that mean it's any less enjoyable? Not at all, unless you're someone that loves to pick apart movies that don't fit your personal writing standards. I'd rather watch a straightforward, fun ????ing action movie with amazing visuals than a movie about a morbidly obese teenager who can't stop popping out babies because she's too stupid to get off her ass and do something about it (Precious). It's straight up action filmmaking with the best visuals I've ever seen. Good enough for me.
The performances were all great, especially Zoe Saldana. Neytiri is the best CGI creation I've ever seen, and the performance went right along with it. I have a real hard time putting it above Gollum, but I'm almost there. Worthington was great in his role as well...he showed a hell of a lot more here than he did in Terminator. Everyone else did their part, and I particularly enjoyed Sigourney Weaver.
I don't know how the movie's going to do financially or whatever, but either way, it's a damn triumph. I don't think it'll "change movies forever", I mean it has the potential to, but I don't believe it will. Mostly because I don't think there are any other directors out there as egotistical, narcissistic and downright ????ing insane as Cameron had to be to pull this off.
Let the haters go right on ahead hating. I've been converted. I can't wait to see this again tomorrow.
