I instantly dismissed this movie when I saw the trailer but I really, really, really enjoyed it for what it was. It was a solid and exciting movie. It's really good.

This is the kind of series that needs a movie every year.



Anyway, this is going to be a flick that starts last, and finishes close. Word of mouth will spread. It's could end up being the sleeper hit of the year. Could.

Just saw it.I liked it a lot better than the Stallone version.I just wished that the used the Dark Judges in the film.They are great characters in the series.I gave DREDD 3D an 8/10!!
I think that Dredd would be a great T.V. series on HBO or AMC!!!

Box Office Mojo:

In sixth place, comic book adaptation/remake Dredd bombed with just $6.3 million from 2,506 locations. That's less than one-third of Kick-Ass's $19.8 million, and only a little over half of the original Judge Dredd's $12.3 million (and that movie was considered a flop 17 years ago!). It's at least up on Shoot 'Em Up ($5.7 million) and about on par with April's Lockout ($6.2 million), though those comparisons suggest Dredd is on track for less than $20 million through its entire run. The audience was predominantly male (75 percent) and older (69 percent were 25 years of age or older) and they gave the movie a "B" CinemaScore. A 3D share is not currently available

So far got about $4 million or so, a bit better than the US, given that the size of the market is like 1/6 of the US

I had high hopes for this movie:

The good:

Urban was great, believable.
The slo-mo action kill shots great.
Great sets
The mini-gun action was awesome.
Ma'ma was great.

The bad:

Unless you read the comics, no back-story save the one minute intro at the begining.
I know the girl-psychic sidekick explains that

'wearing a helmet blocks her psi-ability' but B.S. wear a helmet like the other Judges--have to have something nice to look at given the bleak post-apolyptic blah,blah blah.

Very little character development for J.D. --no back story whatsoever.

My overall score 7/10

I guess I'm missing the complaint? How often have you ever seen Anderson in a helmet? Maybe on a bike? You just don't like the explanation given? Because her not wearing a helmet is how it should be.

Is it just me, but this film seems like it has no advertising... Hopefully good word of mouth will get it going. And Digital Downloads, DVD & Blu-ray sales will boost its overall takings and make a sequel viable. It looks set to be a cult film, considering the critical response it's getting.

To be honest i have scene alot of TV spots for the movie, especially over the weekend with critic quotes in the advertisments. Plus didnt they show it at comic con? And i remember hearing alot of stuff behind the scene, but i have been following the movie so mabey that makes me biased. But they seemed to of had a decent marketing campaign,

Its a shame this movie kind of flopped over the weekend, its sooo good!! Hopefully as you said DVD & Blu Ray sells and Word of mouth will help out.

Great movie. The plot is the same as The Raid, but this is a much more interesting film.

The comic book fans would say that Dredd should have no back story, although I'd have to disagree with that, I'd say I didn't miss it. The other film went the wrong direction with making it ALL about Dredd's backstory.

Too bad it's doing so poorly - I guess the other film has tainted it so that people aren't willing to give this a chance.

I was in no rush to watch this film based on the tv spots. Upon reading all the positive reviews on the board, I will catch it before it leaves theaters.

KU SDCC interview from July:

Urban's rightfully very proud of the film that he made. When I mentioned that there's plenty of room for a franchise for this character, Urban replied, "Look, I love the character. I had a great time making this movie. If it takes off the way it should, the way I think it will, I'd love to do a sequel and revisit the character. But if it becomes nothing but a one-off cult hit, I'll be thrilled with that too. I'm proud of what we did."

After hearing all of the good things about the film, both from the boards and the critics, I went into it today with relatively high expectations. Suffice it to say, the film did not disappoint. The action was great, the story was great, and the characters were great. The first thing I did after it let out was get on my Facebook app and tell everyone I know to go see it, because it deserves as much attention as it can get. Right behind TDKR in terms of my favorite movies from 2012.
