Did the Mother Boxes serve any beneficial purpose? Why weren't they all chucked into space or hidden in another dimension or something after Steppenwolf's original invasion was stopped?

I mean if they're going to copy the prologue from FOTR did they forget that after Sauron was defeated that Elrond and Isildur immediately set out to *destroy* the item that made him so powerful? And then 60 years later when said item resurfaced they immediately made plans to destroy it again. They didn't display it on a pedestal or hide it in a hole somewhere.

There were Green Lanterns and literal "gods" in that previous battle. They could have easily removed all Mother Boxes from the earth and chucked them into the sun or hidden them in Zeus' heavenly realm or whatever.

That's why I doubt that Snyder's cut would have been any better other than simply not having the lame wigs and extra jokes in it. The entire premise is so goofy that the "Saturday Morning Cartoon" approach that they ended up with really might have been the best way to make people overlook such holes in the narrative.
