I have yet to see First Class, though I really want to, especially following the great reception here. I did like TDKR over Avengers, however I admittedly do have a DC/Batman bias.

I'm sorry, I really wanted to like The Town. The whole crime saga/bank heist sub genre is a huge personal favorite of mine, and I was ready to just love the heck out of this film. I even blind bought the bluray after reading all the positive hype. Unfortunately, for me, it just came off as a dull, trashy, and uninspired rip-off of Heat. Affleck himself even praises Heat as a major influence in the making of and the commentary, not to mention the scene within the film where he is watching Heat on tv inside his apartment. If that isn't an admission of influence through an homage, I don't know what is. The film was lousy, overacted, and just... well, not as good as the others in the genre. If someone else has done it better, why bother unless you can match or top their efforts?

I still haven't seen Gone Baby Gone, though I am interested.

I siphoned my own tank in that thread. :lol Saw it, thought it was good, it met my expectations, and it's time for me to move on to other movies I'm looking forward to this year.

Honestly, I have no doubt Affleck can do a good film. I just question WB giving him THIS film. Especially after his "meh" effort with Daredevil (I know he didn't direct it, but he didn't do it any favors). Why not give him Aquaman or Flash and see how he does with a 2nd tier character first and if he proves successful, hand him the keys to the kingdom?

I would be on board with that.

Definitely concerns I have as well. I like they're looking outside the box though.

What's your thoughts on Aquaman in JLA? I was thinking about him the other day and I'm still not certain I see him working based solely on having to bring in so many worlds together. Using the Avengers model you had Thor as your space element and the rest of the heros on earth. With JLA you'd have to bring in your space element, your earth element, and your underwater element. I can't see outside the box on this one though because I've never read much of anything involving Aquaman.

edit: Anyone can correct me here but by my count JLA would have the space element with Green Lantern and Martian Manhunter if they include him, Batman on earth, Superman on earth with ties to Metropolis, Wonder Woman on earth with ties to the Amazon, Flash on earth, Green Arrow on earth, and Aquaman underwater?

Well Affleck is Buddy-Buddy with Kevin Smith... Thats about the only thing he got for himself in this.

I look at Aquaman the same way I look at Thor. Initially I was skeptical about how Thor would work in "today's world" and walked out of that movie impressed by every aspect; most notably, the downplaying of them being "gods." Aquaman's much similar. He's extremely strong, extremely powerful to be able to overcome the ocean depths. The only "iffy" aspect will be his fish whispering. :lol But overall, his is, for the most part, a completely alien universe (though here and not in space). A film handled like Thor would work well, and Aquaman can complement the team similarly.

Luckily the majority of audiences are familiar with Atlantis, so it shouldn't be too hard connecting him to that.

Affect is a good director, but Im not sure he can handle the large scope of a film like this. He's only done small thrillers, and none of them that possess elements of the fantastical nor whimsical.

And I'd rather not have the chance of him playing a character in the film.

Gotta love knee jerk reactions. Ben Affleck is an interesting choice. He's yet to direct a bad film so he's got that going for him. The same can't be said for Favreau before he directed Iron Man and that turned out awesome.

I agree. I think Affleck would be an inspired choice, actually. Out of left field, yeah. But he's already proven to be a damn good filmmaker and, most importantly, he loves and gets the comic genre. I'd compare him to Whedon, except Affleck has more experience in directing films than Whedon did before Avengers. This could work.

I take it he doesn't stay underwater? That's my biggest hangup I guess. Having to cut to an underwater world every time he's on screen.

He is half human, half Atlantian. Think Blade. I think with him they'll use Geoff Johns' recent take on the character where people think he is a nobody, useless joke of a hero until he ____ed up everything. He'll be the comic relief at his expense especially since it seems like they'll go with Barry Allen and not Wally West so they lose the wisecracking there.

Umm...he doesn't like the comic genre.

No, I would not do another. I was cured of that. That experience was not that much fun. And it’s not something I’m particularly looking to go through again.

In general, going forward, for me it’s about ‘What movie am I interested in making? What movie do I really connect to?’ If the director isn’t secure enough about it, the movie won’t work. Directing a movie takes a year or two years. You’ve got to love it as much on day 500 as you do on day one other wise it’s not going to work. So, It just means there is a forced judiciousness for me. Even the kind of thing I’d do as an actor for 10 weeks? I could try a character? I can’t do that as a director. I have to be part of a story I want to tell.

He has no stop talked ____ about it since Daredevil. If he is hired its because he sees the paycheck and the kind of amazing devotion Whedon has gotten or Nolan and not because he loves the genre. If anything I'm sure he'd collaborate with Kevin Smith and even Smith has interesting slants on how these heroes should interact or be. Casting would be severely interesting though and I don't think Ben is the best for the job.

He was talking about portraying Daredevil in that god awful movie. But he's actually a longtime comic book fan. He's talked about keeping copies of Watchmen and TDKR on his nightstand.

I suspect he will turn down the JL directing gig. He seems into doing more artsy stuff, which is fine. But he IS a comic geek and this would be quite different than just starring in one of the c-level movies, so you never know.

The second quote was when he was in talks "reportedly" to direct Man of Steel before Snyder. For a long time comic book fan he certainly doesn't seem to have much love for the big screen genre. I don't think he would be the person for the job because I suspect that he'd just dial it in. With the cluster____ that WB has in trying to push this film out yesterday they need someone who not only loves the characters but also loves the genre of superhero films and would give it the respect it'd need to come off respectable.
