Re: Keaton Batman
Hey guys! Shawn here. First, I don't want to hear any crap about the screen name. My wife registered it
And now on to the point...
OK, guys here he is. This is newly upgraded '89 Keaton BATMAN currently shipping out. He looks the same, so what's the big deal? Why did we wait longer for this? Well, I'll start at the top....
The head/cowl is no longer resin. It's mask-grade Latex rubber, placed over an insert head cast in resin. No paint on the cowl to chip, no chance of a broken ear and no more punctured capes! The bat insignia is resin. I really wanted this to provide some neck articulation, but sadly it didn't happen. You can only go so thin with the cowl and still have it hold its shape, so the rubber is still too thick for the head turn. I guess it's a downside to this design, no matter what scale you're working in.
Second is the armor. This is now also cast in mask-grade Latex. It's much thinner than the urethane armor, and I have never gotten this much articulation from any film-style Batman figure. It's impressive. It also means a leaner, meaner-looking figure. He no longer has the overly broad chest or the thunder thighs I know a lot of you didn't like. He also lacks those harsh transitions between the armor and the suit due to the much thicker urethane I've always used.
And for the first time (with any of my figures, anyway) this guy has actual fully hollow boots. No more resin feet, no more chopping the feet off the figure to put them on. And as you can see, he retains full ankle articulation! You can't even get that with a "factory" vinyl boot. Thick enough to hold their shape, thin enough to flex.
The gloves are still basically the same, except for being cast in latex. I'm trying to get some wrist articulation in there but, again, it's a matter of getting the rubber thin enough but still having something that holds its shape.
The cape is still the same stuff, but has a slightly modified pattern that allows it to crease strategically in the front and hang far batter than it did before.
A Hell of a lot of work and experimenting with processes I had only dabbled in, but I think it's well worth it. I think I made about five sets of plaster molds before I got the hang of that. I had never made plaster absorption molds before, it's tricky! These started shipping, FINALLY, on Friday and should be reaching you shortly.
Some of you had asked if the upgrades were possible on previous figures without having to get a new figure. Unfortunately, no. This is a completely different figure now, from the ground up.
Be assured though that they are still the same high-quality figure you're used to seeing. There are NO fundamental changes to his appearance. All of the plaster molds for the latex were taken directly from the parts I've always used. And I took great care to be certain he still looked the same. The only visual difference is the slimmer look, which I think is something you all really wanted. Thanks to everyone for your continued support and patience, and allowing me the time it takes farting around with this stuff to provide the best figures I possibly can. Be sure and let me know what you think of these as they start to arrive, and Happy Holidays!
Cheers,
Shawn
