Re: Kong: Skull Island

The 80's were the king of sci-fi and action, the 90's claim to fame was dramas and crime movies. Best fantasy was in the 00's (LOTR, Pan's Labyrinth, the better HP films) and Pixar really hit it's stride. In the 10's (or whatever this decade is called) we've got overall the best superhero movies with unprecedented inter-connectivity.

Well Godfather still reigns supreme but the 90's gave us Heat and Basic Instinct. :lol

But T2, True Lies, ID4, JP1 and Starship Troopers carried the 90's into respectable scifi/action territory.

My favorite comedy movie of the 90's will always be Clerks.

Clerks helped me get thru my pharmacology classes. :lol

I know the Godfather 1 and 2 are considered better, but I prefer Goodfellas :chase

Actually, looking at the 90's year by year, there are so many great dramas :thud:

You forgot The Matrix!

Jurassic Park, T2 and The Matrix are great enough for me to put the 90s ahead of the 80s in terms of sci-fi/action.

No way :lol

90's wipes the floor with the 80's as far as drama and animation goes, but sci-fi? No way.

We can make a list and compare.

I'm with you that the 80s produced a lot more good Sci-fi/action flicks, but outside of maybe Predator, I wouldn't rank anything above or on par with T2, Jurassic Park and The Matrix. For me those movies still hold up well today, and there isn't any 90s cheesy charm to keep them viewable like most of the great 80s movies tend to have.

Re: Kong: Skull Island

Well just ESB/ROTJ alone win it for the 80's scifi.

Then when you add:

Aliens/Predator/BladeRunner/Raiders/WrathofKhan/TheFly/Robocop
EscapeFromNY/LastStarfighter/EnemyMine/ET/Starman/RoadWarrior
WeirdScience/TheHidden/Scanners/Terminator

and the 90's are crushed.

ESB, The Road Warrior, Aliens, Robocop, The Terminator, The Thing, Blade Runner, The Fly, Escape from New York, Back to the Future, Star Trek: The Wrath of Kahn, The Search for Spock, First Blood, Lethal Weapon, Die Hard, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Rocky 3, Rocky 4, 48 Hours, The Abyss, Alien Nation, Ghostbusters, Brazil, and The Dark Crystal.

You really don't think the 80's had better Sci-fi/action flicks? Come on.

When it comes to drama and animation, the 90's crush the 80's, but Sci-fi and action? Nah..

Re: Kong: Skull Island

I think p was just referring to scifi.

But my 80's sci-fi list still crushed his 90's sci-fi list. :lol

My list was the best and greatest.

Re: Kong: Skull Island

Oh, well...he said "/action" :lol

Still, the point was made.

*insert baby turtle photo*

Oh yeah he did say action.

This is most wrong pturtle has ever been in his history of wrongness.

The 70's had many great crime films yes but the 90's just own the 80's in that genre.

Goodfellas
Reservoir Dogs
True Romance
Pulp Fiction
Heat
Fargo
Casino
Millers Crossing
Se7en
The Usual Suspects
Bound
L. A. Confidential

The 80's have no answer to such a list. Same with dramas.

Re: Kong: Skull Island

I agree with you guys that the 80s produced a lot more great sci-fi/action action flicks than the 90s did, I wasn't arguing that, but I'm saying T2 and The Matrix wipe the floor with every movie you guys posted, they're the best sci-fi/action films overall in my opinion.

Edit: actually yea I'm wrong here :lol

Looking over Clown's list again, even though I think T2 and The Matrix are better than all those movies, that list is just too legendary.

I'm definitely wrong here.

I think the 2000's (2000-2009) and 2010's (2010-2017) have the best balance of great drama, animation, sci-fi, and action.

Just saw this post. Yes the 2000's and 2010's have better balance across those genres than any previous decades with the 00's having the edge on animation (three Miyazaki movies and arguably Pixar's best work) and the 10's having slightly better thrillers overall. If you include musicals and romantic comedies then 2000-2009 probably reigns supreme as having the best balance across all genres, only lacking in Westerns (Brokeback Mountain, lol.)

Yeah, another trend or noticeable fact about the 2000's and 2010's, is the resurgence of franchises. The 80's started numerous franchises, both in the action and science fiction genre. The 90's didn't give us many franchises, mainly because drama and crime don't lend themselves to sequels, but animation, superhero films, fantasy, Sci-Fi, and action do, so we're seeing a lot of sequels in the last 17 years. It doesn't look like it's going to change any time soon.

The 2000's and 10's have some good westerns too. Maybe more than the 90's. Not sure about the 80's. Obviously the 40's and 50's probably had the most. John Wayne alone probably had more westerns than the last 3 decades combined :lol
