Anything below # 1 is a complete failure.

Superheros have finally achieved greatness.

It is way overdue for the king of all monsters.

I fear for this franchise if it doesn't deliver the entire goods (critically and financially).

No pressure. :lol

You really can't beat Gojira ever, and for me Godzilla solo movies will always rank higher.

I tend to agree. It's great to have monster battles, but the films where Godzilla is the lone monster have always had the most heart.

And back to the designs...I don't think it's fair to use the flaws of the suit (not the design) and compare it to this new Godzilla (which has way more money into it than any Godzilla before). If you took '91's design or the one from Biollante and placed him in this film with modern SFX, CGI, Mo-Cap, and animatronics, I think everyone would be blown away. He'd look more like a living creature than the suit did. And he'd look very imposing on the screen. And that goes for many of the static (compared to this) fearsome suits of the earlier films. '54 would look even more creepy with those beady eyes. '64 might have been one of the looks that was perfected on screen so I don't know how much more we'd get out of him.

But how would this not look amazing with big-budget FX? (obviously the flabby-suit detractors won't be present)

HE looks majestic. Even in a world already full of giant beasts and other Godzillas, this Godzilla was acknowledged as particularly angry and powerful looking. When he showed up, for once, it was treated that is was he who was superior over King Ghidorah. Aside form him looking more "alive" and without the restrictions of being a man in a 140 pound suit (so he'd have, you know, wrists and a real physique), he'd be so imposing on screen. I would just want his spines to be bonier looking or sharper (and less puffy and start higher on his back) and I think he'd look perfect.

After going back and looking at the new TMNT pictures, I immediately realized that this Godzilla on the magazine cover looks part snapping turtle or something. The rounder chest and belly and short snout. If he wasn't over 360 feet tall, I'd say he can look like a mutated villain for the turtles to face off against. Like when Raphael's pet turtle Slash got mutated and attacked Leo, Donny, and Mikey--he kind of looked like this Godzilla.

Insteresting. Im guessing godzilla was smaller but gets mutated by radiation and grows his powers.

I hate to say this (as a Godzilla fan since the age of two).... But I have never been the biggest fan of the original 54 film... While it is the best made and most serious Godzilla film it also tend to be one of the most boring. It's just not a film I can return to time and again. Having said that... Film wise/story wise it's the best. It's just not my fav.

What makes Godzilla films so great is the absolute perfect design of Godzilla. There is something about his look that just captures the imagination of both the young and the old. The Large spines, the extra long tail, the stance that he has, the three (or four) toes, the four fingers etc.... Everything about him is lightning in a bottle. Lets face it... How much would anyone love the original 54 film had it not bee for that perfectly designed monster. What if it Gorosaurus that attacked Tokyo? Would the film still be help in such high regard??? Perhaps it would but it would not have spawned 29 films (Zilla don't count).

My fav. Godzilla films have always been the ones that focused more on the monsters. Godzilla vs Mother 64 is a perfect example. A perfect blend of F/X, monsters, story, and good acting.... Not to mention Godzilla most bada$$ look. I also am one of the few that does not hate Son of Godzilla. Even though its by far Godzilla's worst look I like that all the monsters are taken seriously (minus Son) but even then I love Godzilla's parenting style (I think we need more of that today).

But are any of these films as "good" as the original... No... I just ejoy them way more.

Personally if this new film turns out as good as the trailers then this will be hands down my fav. Godzilla film. And that is

I can't argue with that... Of course I have never liked Godzilla 84. If the Godzilla scenes were not sleep inducing I could probably enjoy it more but the Godzilla in that film is the slowest most boring Godzilla ever. No offense to Maulfan.... Since I now you love his look. That has never been a highlight for me either.

Until I see this new Godzilla in full force I am not going to rank him higher or lower then the original films. I personally am having trouble with the complete design but I understand that they were going for a more "realistic" approach. I am not sure you can do much better then what they did. It looks like it could be a living breathing creature. If you made a Godzilla based on the suits but just upped the smoothness of the motions and took away some of the "suit" look. I am not sure todays audiences would have taken to that... I am already afraid that this film might not be the huge success people are hoping it will be. I base that on theaters were the first trailer played and people laughed when the name Godzilla appeared. Make him look too much like the same ol Godzilla Suit and people would just laugh harder. (PS - I hate people) But I get what you are saying... I look at the new Godzilla and wonder if I feel Godzilla there.

Still, I think that the new design (on the two empire covers) looks better then what I could have hoped for. I think he still looks majestic and if they get his personality right then I will have no issue believing that this is a Godzilla that will be right at home next to all the others.

There's so much into Gojira that I personally don't get bored. I think the acting and music is top-notch. I love the whole Odo Island segments, the mythology and tales of the legend of Godzilla. The two city-smashing appearances are very dark, gritty, and dramatic. The aftermatch is done so well. And the ending is just all-around emotional. I even feel for the Big G when he gets caught in the Oxygen Destroyer. Having said all that, you have your opinion, just like all of us. Riddick hates all the Showa movies I think and I hate most of the non-Showa films :rotfl. You like Mothra vs. Godzilla, and I agree with you there. That may not be the best Godzilla movie, but that is surely one of the best giant monster movies of all-time--in my mind.

Part of me just wishes the reveal of the new Godzilla was better. The money shot (or lack thereof). It was underwhelming to me. You finally reveal his face and you do it where he really doesn't look as majestic or as all-powerful as he should. It's a glimpse of him with a door closing on his face. A slow surface from the water next to an aircraft carrier or something from a face-to-face level at a highpoint would have been way more epic and shown the scope of him. They could have done that better. Even if it should one of the guys halo jumping out the plane again but this guy unfortunately came through the clouds, through the thick smoke, and right in front of Godzilla's massive, pissed off looking face would have been a better sense of scale and god-like might.

The design is pretty cool. It's got elements I like. I don't think he looks as imposing or as amazing as other people here do. I think he looks more like a beaten down version of Toho's Godzilla, damaged or older (like near death). If he and Hesei Godzilla, or GMK Godzilla were the same size and fought this new Godzilla, I think Toho versions would look like the stronger contenders. But at the end of the day as far as this new film universe goes, those Godzillas don't exist and hopefully this one looks promising as the potential is and less goofy in some of the shots we've seen so far.

The story checks out so far. I am very excited.

Ya know... I try and put the whole IMO part in my comment more... My Comments about the original being boring are of course IMO.... I did not mean to make the comment of it being boring like I was stating fact... I just find it boring. But I also find it well made and fully understand why there are those who like it and love it. So I meant no disrespect to the fans of the original... I still like it... it's just not my fav..

Godzillaspawn.... Do you think you would still find the film as enjoyable as it is if it Godzilla did not look like he did?? Of course anyone could say that about any film (would ALIEN still be great without the Giger design?). I am not saying that the film would not still be good... I just think that the design of Godzilla is so damn perfect that it is what made the movie... It's probably a dumb question the more I think about it as it's not really a fair question as the film would not be Godzilla without him in it regardless of how good it is.

I just have always been amazed at how there are so many Godzilla fans out there and how we all love the monster for the same things.... A truly perfect design.

I am in no way offended. I don't think you have to worry about offending anyone here for not being a big of the original. You made your opinions on it crystal clear but respected the attitudes of every one who may think differently.

Its a hard question to answer. But I think even if he had a more boring design we'd all acknowledge that its a very well-made film. Like king kong. He's a plain gorilla. Just a big ape. But its a great film. But I do agree that the Godzilla design is what truly sustained a series because it sure as hell wasn't Godzilla Raids Again. He has that look that is just so intriguing to the eye. Toho accidentally stumbled on a winning formula to change his design from film to film. It made him way more marketable and interesting in each film so he didnt take a backseat to the new enemy.
