Broke and happy
That's not too shabby.
A year to design that Godzilla, huh?
Wow.
Whether you like the design or not, it just does not seem like it should take that long at all. It's...basic. Once you know the general principles of how you want Godzilla to look (reptilian, dinosaur0ish, muscular, more "meaty", etc.) it just seems like a year is a stretch.
I don't know, to me, a year seems reasonable. For one, Legendary cares about doing this right and understands the dissappointment of the '98 film and wants to do right by fans. You also have Toho probably being more involved and particular about the design than they were in 98. We saw from the maqeuttes at SDCC that there were at least 2 statues sharing similarities to his final design with not all of them present, leads me to think there was a lot of back and forth tweaking and playing with even the smallest details. Look at the maquettes for the original Gojira, very subtle differences but they were enough that the filmmakers kepy making tweaks until they were happy.
I appreciate the level of effort that and the time spent on the story demonstrates. I can only imagine the art book will be loaded with a lot of imagery.
Right on. If you read that interview with Roland Emmerich in the new Empire Magazine, you know that he had Patrick Tatopolous create GINO in what amounts to about a couple of days' worth of work and give it to Toho for approval. And that's the design they kept and really didn't tweak much. Yeah, about a few days' worth of work. And look how that turned out. I'm glad Edwards and Co. took a year to get this thing pinned down. It shows dedication to try to get it right instead of just throwing something together half-assed and getting approved at the last minute for what amounted to a cash grab by Toho (the Emmerich interview kinda painted that picture of the whole GINO fiasco).
That actually backs up my point. Actually, Zilla is a nice design. It may not be nice for Godzilla, but as a monster design it's pretty neat. And it was a complete re-imagining of Godzilla. And P-Tat came up with that design so quickly. That's impressive. These guys have had a year to design a monster that they are pretty much just incorporating different elements of existing Godzilla designs.
Reading around the various Godzilla forums though, I get a strong sense that after Gino, people were going to be very picky about the design, hell, they're picky about Toho suits. All the interviews and such show, Legendary and Edwards really wanted to take the project on and felt a great pressure to deliver something that respects the fandom. Should it take a year, probably not, could it, sure, I'm sure they probably got close to the design pretty quick but a little voice kepy making them think, is it good enough. Again, Toho has to bless it too, and they might have been really picky and made the designers go back and forth alot. Hopefully the art book will give more insight.

That's not hard. People do complete re-designs from the ground up that look more complex and detailed than what they've done with Bear-Goji in a matter of a couple months and that's part time when they have free time between work and/or school. They smooshed his face in, gave him smaller jagged spines, and decided to give him more of a turtle-ish/gator-ish skin texture. I wish my job had those kind of deadlines.
Godzilla's a rather simple formula. There is a vast array of designs that they could have come up with that the general population would have accepted as "Godzilla". Emmerich/Devlin failed because they threw all that out and just named some other animal Godzilla. And now the fans are so scarred by that that as long as he has the normal physical traits (upright, spines, radioactive breath), it's more like "thank god they get it!".
With the two Empire cover out there both being my Desk tops at work I can say this.... I am falling in love with the Design!!!! So yes a year might be a while but it works. from the trailer I can tell that I love the spines on his back. From the Empire covers I can tell I love the design of the face and body. The second cover that came out was the real winner for me. This looks and feels like a realistic Godzilla... If they get his personality right in the film then this could be my fav. Godzilla design. I am really starting to fall for it that hard.
It is different enough that I had trouble excepting it at first. But the more I look at it the more I think it looks incredible.
As far a Gino goes... I Fing hate that design. For Godzilla or for any other creature. I think it's awful and it does not surprise me that it only took a few day. I remember an interview with Pat Tatodfjndjnfbv (whatever) and him saying one of his inspirations was Tigger from Winnie the Pooh... You can see it in Gino's Jaw... I was glad he admitted to that because I remember when I first saw it I thought of Tigger. It is IMO a boring design with nothing that makes it stand out. Not to seem like I am coming at anyone who liked the design for what it was. I just never liked it... Add to the fact it was supposed to be Godzilla and it stinks to high heaven.
I am in love with the new look. If this film kicks Butt and Godzilla looks as good as he does on that cover of Empire then I have a feeling this will become a lot of fans fav. design.
GINO had design elements from Winnie da Pooh? I never took that monster serious before and I definitely DON'T take it serious now! Way to go Emmerich!
Haha where did you get this from? If this is true than Emmerich trolled harder than I imagined.
Just curious MF, but what other Godzilla forums do you frequent?

The guy who designed it said he put Tigger into the creature because his daughter was into Winnie the Pooh at the time.
