After buying the MonsterArts Godzilla 1964 I wanted to go and rewatch that film. Can't get enough of it. Love the corporate greed vs spiritual nature theme going on in the film. And Godzilla is perfect. He's mean and threatening to everybody and just keeps advancing no matter what stands in his way. While the film has elements of black and white, good and evil, Godzilla is a constant reminder that he, much like mother nature, has no prejudices.

But I still hate that '64 goes out like a chump against literally two infant Mothras. GMK Godzilla would have ate them like my gecko eats his worms.

One thing that came out of the Encounter web campaign that I enjoyed was the timeline and showing Japanese culture as it relates to the films and you can pretty much tie some big issue to every major Godzilla film and the weaker entries come at points where they're making the movie to make movies but there's no grander message in the story. This is why I have high hopes for the new film, the director seems intent on making a social commentary with the film, and we're in a time again where man is dealing with concequences of serious crimes against nature.

Don't get me wrong, I love all Godzillla films, but where he was born to stand as a metaphor for something, I do feel like the best films carry on with strong symbolism about relevant social topics. Granted in many cases that symbolism passed right by me as an American viewer without reading up on things, but it doesn't change how I feel about the films and that's my point. I don't need a blatant social statement, but one having influence tends to lead to the better films, Hedorah being one of the weaker films with a statement behind it.

A. Writers right about now are scrambling how to include the Govt shutdown in this movie. :rotfl

B. The ***ishima nuclear meltdown in Japan, from natural disaster, definately opens up the door to create new metaphors for Godzilla.

C. You just dissed Hedorah. Biojex will has a sad. :rotfl

I love that facepalm. :rotfl

Maulfan better watch it before he gets Hedorah'd! :cuss

Died a little in the 90's? How so?

There were great films of him released in Japan which were popular but unfortunately NOT in the U.S.

There was...

Vs. Ghidorah (1991)
Vs. Mothra (1992)
Vs. Space Godzilla (1994)
Vs. Destroyah (1995)

And Bandai produced some very cool vinyl figures during that time too! :rock

Agreed. :goodpost:
