Re: Legendary Pictures' GODZILLA - May 16, 2014
Your skepticism is very warranted. But everything we've seen so far has done nothing but excite me. The picture they've been painting, through interviews, little bits of info, teaser trailers, and concept art, have me really believing they have the right idea and concept for Godzilla. Obviously we have little to go on, but what little we HAVE seen has been spot on to what they should be doing. Even the human cast to me says, they're very aware of what makes a good film.
I'm keeping my excitement at an even simmer....but it's very close to boiling over. I think once I see an official teaser trailer in HD or what have you...that'll be it for me...![LOL :lol :lol](/styles/default/xenforo/smilies/old/lol.gif)
I refuse to get ahead of myself in glorifying this film too early on. I don't know how anybody can feel confident in saying this film is going to be great or amazing or revolutionary or bring back the giant monster genre at the moment. I'm happy people are excited for this film, but when the dust settles and the teaser is as old to us as the people who saw it back in 2012, what will we really take from it? Let's be honest here. The teasers so far just hit the easy things. We're Godzilla fans--we SHOULD see that and get excited. That means nothing.
Yes, the squished trains with the bodies littered everywhere looked fantastic. The devastation was very eerie. The hole in the building...,well, that was a bit Zilla-ish. The bug looked...weird (but big for sure).
But with what little of that may even be on screen, this movie can still fail to stand out in many ways. Good actors can't help poor writing. Considering how long it's been that even Toho put forth a very good Godzilla film, I'm still skeptical to get my expectations all high and prematurely expect greatness. This franchise has taught me this lesson before.
In fact. this genre has taught me this before. Jackson's Kong had the right mood and kept to the original rather faithfully. Yet, it's not a film I've wanted to watch again since it has come out in theaters. Also, Godzilla being portrayed as a "force of nature" is such a generalized statement that it can be good or bad. Godzilla has been depicted like that in countless films, very few of them being real quality movies in my opinion. In a film as dark and gritty that Legendary is promising us, I personally think Godzilla should lean towards the meaner, more evil side--the deliberatelly destructive beast born from mankind's cruelist hour.
I'm keeping myself from getting too excited and being let down. So much can still be neglected or miss the mark. I'm sure it will be the most visually impressive film, but I do believe there is a reason why it's been so long since there has been a truly great Godzilla film.
