All the people saying this film is a disappointment and the worst is out of there mind. This is the Godzilla we deserved in 98 and if you stick by that film and call it better than this. Something is wrong with you. So far nothing but positives on this film including from the critics. Seriously America got it right after the disaster in 98. Toho I bet is proud finally and if we truly get a sequel with more classic Godzilla monsters than **** yeah. The King of the Monsters is reborn and he will live on instead of being casted away in the shadows by everyone else. He's back and I'm happy to see this film doing well. We'll hopefully see Toho make new Godzilla films and see a sequel to this. I see no disappointment in this film. It has it's cons but not so much. Pros out weigh it. No film is perfect. All have it's flaws even the best. I'm a die hard Godzilla fan including my brother and we are satisfied with what we saw. Stop whining. I've seen to much nitpicking ******** lately in the movie threads. Nothing perfect out there but so far not trash.

Personally I liked the movie, but I don't think the director should follow the same formula for Godzilla 2 as planned. It definitely needs more Godzilla than part 1 to some degree.

I stated and Agree with you there but I understand why he did it. Definitely more Godzilla in the next.

Do people complain about the lack of T-rex in Jurassic Park? Or do the other dinosaur appearances balance it out enough? If so why, don't the Mutos create that balance for people as well? I realize that film isn't called "T-rex", so people may stroke this thought differently. I was just juggling this around in my brain today.

Every trailer and TV spot gives everyone the impression that Godzilla is the bad guy though. I went into the cinema thinking I was about to watch Godzilla destroy humanity.

I was going to make the same point to Josh... This movie opened Huge with most people thinking Godzilla was the bad guy.... Now to Josh's point... Perhaps it would have been a bigger opening if it was advertised as Godzilla being the good guy... I don't know... I just wish we got the film advertised.

I agree with you, and I also agree that Pacific Rim was the much better film. But I think now that godzilla has been established Edwards will go all Aliens on the sequel and give us badass action from the start of the first monster encounter. If this was the "Alien" of godzilla films, I want the next to be the "Aliens" of godzilla films, all out war, don't hold back. Especially when Godzilla is supposed to be the hero of the film, he needs more presence.

I would be up for am "ALIENS" of the Godzilla films.... PR is not better then Godzilla though ;)

Yeah, not looking forward to my PR second viewing. :lol

There were lots of shots of ATJ sleeping. :lol

As much as I am not a huge fan of PR.... It was better with my second viewing.

The movie did well to restore "respect" to the American film version of Godzilla.

Considering how it already has the largest box office opening of the summer and is probably on track to make a lot more, it's likely we will see a sequel. The movie did well in what it spiritually "set out" to do with Godzilla. And considering ALL the various interpretations of Godzilla we've seen in Japanese film (anti-hero, force of nature, villain, wraith monster of WW2 deceased Japanese pilots, etc.), there's plenty of room to turn Godzilla into a disaster beast like he should be. Just get rid of Johnson in the sequel, bring back Watanabe in a more "inclusive" role (as opposed to his wide-eyed scientist) and cast a STRONG main role actor. Considering the movie might get a bigger budget, obviously there will be many more monster scenes/battles.

Not if the same director comes back... He is talking about using the same restraint as the first film.

I agree

DREDD great movie. Bad box office

I think I would have enjoyed Judge Dredd more if I had not seen The Raid a month before... the were both similar but The Raid was far better so Dredd was a bit of a let down.

All for a sequel... The more Godzilla the better... I just hope Garth listens to the fans a bit.

As a huge Godzilla fan... I am also happy to see the film is doing well.... But there was much room for improvement. Yes this was light years better then the 98 version... But not as good as the Original and some of the other sequels IMO. It was really well made and shot but it missed a bit on the Godzilla character. I have said it before and I will again... This Godzilla had more in common with the 98 Godzilla (as far as Godzilla's personality goes) then the Japan Godzilla's. 2014 Godzilla was too much of an everyday animal... He lacked that bad assness and intelligence that the Toho G had.

This film had enough flaws that I would not call it nit picking... Like I said. Bring on the next film but make room for improvement.

Personally I liked the movie, but I don't think the director should follow the same formula for Godzilla 2 as planned. It definitely needs more Godzilla than part 1 to some degree.

The director keeps referring to Spielberg. Thing is Spielberg filled his movies like JAWS and CEOT3K and to a lesser extent JP.. with characters that we liked and enjoyed watching. He could follow that same formula but he better make the characters more interesting or he could find that method biting him in the ass in the next film... I don't think audiences will stand for it again.

Better characters in JP help even out the lack of Dino's... There was also a feeling of real threat in JP because we cared for those characters and they got much more up close and personal with the Dino's... So the payoff was better IMO..

Ok, just returned from my 4th and final viewing.

It always takes me 3 or 4 to make a final decision on a movie.

I went in with the mindset that I never watched the trailers for it.

I am going to give it a final positive review.

I just feel that the good outweighs the bad, that simple.

The 2 cuts that hurt it the most are the airport and San Fran day.

That being said, his introduction at the airport, with first the foot, then the tail, then the pan up to his head with the music swelling is the BEST Godzilla reveal-arrival out of of ANY of his movies.

Period.

I'm ending this on a positive note.

LOL!! 4x.... No wonder the film made as much as it did... Jye kept going back and taking people along for the ride :)

Someone here said bring back Jen Wannabe for the sequel... Man I hope not... He was the worst part of the film.... He was there to explain that Godzilla was the good guy and that was about it.... Don't know how he knew he was the good guy... Don't know how he knew much about anything other then for plot convenience. He really was annoying IMO. At least figure it out as the film unfolds... Don't have all the answers right off the bat....

Also... Shouldn't everyone have dropped a load in their pants when Godzilla first breathed his Radioactive fire??? Should have been some kind of better reaction then someone on the radio saying "did you see that?" Of course Ken Wannabe probably knew he was going to do it the whole time....

I guess its just a overall package type thing. We go see Jurassic park for the variety of dinosaurs presented, while Godzilla (especially since its a reboot showing him for the first time) is what everybody came to see over mutos.

Besides..........the T-Rex can't touch the innovative behavior of the Raptors

VERY underrated in favor of the "big bad" T-rexes

I was thinking some of it had to do with the conclusion of a scene instead of cutting away. For instance, the t-rex chasing the jeep ends with the t-rex giving up and walking away. Not just cutting to different characters and settings.

JAWS I understand what you're coming from. There can always be improvement but to me this Godzilla had a better personality and a bad ass side to him than the 98. In this movie they really go beyond and show that even him as a monster can have a animalistic side but also have his own personality. His bad ass side showed differently which I enjoyed too. It was a new take. I don't compare this film to the Toho Godzilla films because it's American made. I do say this go around they nailed a lot for the King and for a movie of him. It's finally a relief that we got him right in this one. This movie is way past anything the 98 did. This is a HUGE improvement. While adding its own touches I think they did very well. Just my opinion and I say the King of the Monster deserves it come back in glory.

I found it a bit strange how he seemed to kill people one minute through tidal waves, and seemingly did his best to avoid killing them the next. An example of this was the bridge scene. He even held on to the bridge support cables like he was trying to be delicate with it until they kept firing at him.

He couldn't get around the ships in the water. He has no control of his mass and strength.

I should correct myself a bit... Godzilla was a bad ass with the other monsters.... but still came across as a bit too animal like. I thought his interaction with the humans was a bit too 98ish though... Hell he even had a face to face with the main star lol :)

I am going to go see this again... Hoping that my enjoyment improves now that I know exactly what kind of Godzilla film I am going to see.

saw this a second time today, it's better on the second viewing but it still doesn't hold a candle to Pacific Rim. I damn nearly cried in that film when they emptied the clip on leatherback it brought me so much ****ing joy, easily one of the coolest things I've seen in a movie theater. Godzilla unfortunately doesn't have that moment in it's film. Even Otachi jumping on Gipsy and spreading it's wings and taken off into the air is better than any of the action pieces in godzilla. I still like godzilla, I don't love it, but Edwards needs to bring the heat up on the sequel. It almost felt like Edwards was embarrassed to show a straight on monster fight like the audience would never accept it where as Del Toro embraced it and that's what I didn't like the most about this Godzilla film.

Also when Edwards talks about jaws and alien there's one thing those films had that this didn't and that was an ensemble cast that was fun to watch. ATJ had no one to share the moments with once his dad was gone, it was just him which is why he felt boring because he had next to no one to really share the moments with that was with him the whole way.

I have to disagree with you bud. Godzilla coming from underneath the ground in Mothra vs. Godzilla '64 and him rising out of the volcano in Godzilla vs. Biollante I think are the best ones still.

Now, best kill-shot in a Godzilla movie ever probably goes to Godzilla 2014 for his fatality on mama Muto.

Nah, when Godzilla first charged up his beam, the tail-swipe that impaled Muto 1, and the brutal beheading of Muto 2 with that badass roar were better than anything I saw in Pacific Rim. PR had cool moments don't get me wrong, but it was more fun than epic to me.
