It's not really divided opinion on here. It's been condemned as a disappointment by the majority on here.

There will never be another Jaws. Last film to become Jaws for me was Alien. As for JP who knows. Remember Jaws and JP were firsts really so it would be really difficult for a film to top or even be in the same league

Im guessing a 2016 release? Or 2017?

Depends, there's legal issues to deal with. There's still a pending lawsuit around this movie I believe, now Legendary has cut ties with WB and went over to Universal, so I don't know if the rights to Godzilla are in a clear ownership or if it's something that would have to be negotiated or what. I'm guessing 2017 probably most likely by the time you get a story developed and shoot and all.

The more and more we go on with the Internet/computer/instant gratification/adt generation the more hate films will get when they get "not enough" of action/creatures/effects. If this Godzilla flick was released 35 years ago more folks would go gaga over this film than today. I still wonder how many in this forum could survive watching films from the 40s and 50s (when a ton of acting was done) and see what ratings they would give

Have you seen this movie? There's plenty of action, it's just not with Godzilla. The main problem here is the main character is not very likable short of being Bryan Cranston's kid. He's very typical, a mediocre actor, and feels totally expendable even with a family. The movie frames the characters in a way that makes it impossible to have fun rooting for any of them. Jaws and JP are drawing comparisons because we have characters that make it out the other end that are just as lovable as the beasties. Grant, Malcom, Chief Brody, Hooper, these characters that are just as synonymous with the movie as the creature. Here the only human that attains that level of likability is killed off fairly quickly and we don't even get a creature we can root for until the last 15 mins. That leaves the entire middle act just a boring mess held together with a bunch of mediocre plot strings. Put a picture of Ian Malcom in his sunglasses or Chief Brody on the boat with the cig hanging out of his mouth and everyone will know who that is. Ford? He's a forgettable nobody.

Not really. its considered Average. I think its a good movie and the godzilla parts are the only thing that saves it.

Well this movie is a hit so im guessing they will settle this soon. And while they are at it get rights to the other monsters.

The problem wasn't the lack of godzilla but the fact that without him the film was extremely boring and the characters had no substance to engage the audience. The amount of times I was hoping practically the entire cast was going to get squashed was unreal.

I was looking forward to this movie with the idea that with real character development and great writing combined with Godzilla we could end up with something (obviously not as good) like Alien or Jaws which Gareth Edwards even compared this movie to in interviews, even some of the trailers gave this impression. Alien and Jaws had the ability to keep viewers engaged, tense and interested all the way through the movie and the monsters were an added bonus yet still shown and fleshed out much more than Godzilla was. Once Cranston kicks the bucket this movie gets more boring by the minute. To make matter worse after realising the characters were dull and nothing much was happening other that "Godzilla is on the move" or "Godzilla is expected to get here in 3 hours" the monsters barely had any screen time so you end up grasping for something to enjoy.

I felt as if I was watching someone else watch the action most of the time and every time something should have happened it didn't. There is a point in movies, particularly these types of movies, where the audience needs an outlet regardless of the genre and especially if the central characters suck. In this movie that never seemed to happen until the end and even that wasn't very satisfying.

"Oh look Godzilla is finally here, better shut the door and screw the audience over again!"

This is more of a personal nitpick also but a lot of the time I felt as if I was watching an army propaganda movie or a call of duty advert.

I agree. The design of Godzilla was awesome and I loved Cranston. In fact, I was really into the movie up until the point that he died because I cared about his character and what happened to him. When he died and his son was left to carry the rest of the movie, the character drama and my interest and investment in them went downhill. His son wasn't even that bad when he had Cranston to play off of, but he wasn't able to keep my interest when he was by himself. Killing Cranston was a big mistake in my opinion. The lack of Godzilla screen time isn't a problem in and of itself, if you're invested in the human characters, but I wasn't and it made the movie feel like it was dragging on. I wouldn't mind if they gave the sequel to somebody other than Edwards as well.

The article on SHH said that even though Legendary is now with Universal that they will partner with WB to make the sequel.

I should correct myself a bit... Godzilla was a bad ass with the other monsters.... but still came across as a bit too animal like. I thought his interaction with the humans was a bit too 98ish though... Hell he even had a face to face with the main star lol :)

I am going to go see this again... Hoping that my enjoyment improves now that I know exactly what kind of Godzilla film I am going to see.

Well good. Go see it again and really make up your mind on it. To me it's not a disappointment or a huge let down. This movie is the introduction to the King. The next should be more Godzilla. :)

Everyone has different expectations and things they look for in a film. No-one in their right mind could say this is worse than the 98 film but that doesn't mean it's good. It's a lot of ideas not fully realised and mixed together in 3 sections (where the first half hour could be cut down to a few minutes and have the same effect), with not much of the titular character and fight scene cop outs by going to a news clip or just skipping ahead in time. And when we actually got to see some fighting it was in the dark under smokey conditions. It may be the best american Godzilla film but it's far from a masterpiece even if it's not trash. But they've introduced him now so maybe in the sequel they'll be braver and show us more of what we want to see.

I understand what your coming from and not calling this film a masterpiece. I know everyone has a opinion and different expectations of movies but this film is not really a huge disappointment or trash. It's far from it and America got something right to revive the franchise into more. As a Huge Godzilla fan I've been waiting for this movie o come out and I would hope it does well so we can get more films and we are. This movie opened new doors to the franchise and I think the next film is what you all want.

Something is wrong with YOU, actually.
Take Emmerich's movie and cut all the fun with most of the action then make it bigger, messier, dumber... VOILA! :lol

Nah your point doesn't come across me as anything to think about. What I think of the film is way different from you. There is nothing wrong with me. I enjoyed the film and it brings new things to come for the King. That's what I've been wanting for years. No big mess in my eyes. :lecture:dunno

Seriously why bring Cranston in for the trailers and making him out to be the main character when we are following kickass throughout the movie. The movie would of been so much better if they had Cranston and wantanabe as a team trying to destroy the monsters and cranstons sorta dies at the end sacrificing himself to kill one of the muto. Ah well.

I would have had Cranston survive and made the focus reuniting him with his son after realizing that's all he really has left after finding his answers and I think you could potentially have had a far more engaging movie. He doesn't need to destroy the monsters, it just would have been more compelling to see him overcome his own personal "monsters" and get back his family. Instead he pretty much just kills himself looking for answers and forces more weight onto his kid's shoulders. Plus if he'd survived , he'd have seen and learned a lot of others suffered loss the same as him as a result of the things.

Do people complain about the lack of T-rex in Jurassic Park? Or do the other dinosaur appearances balance it out enough? If so why, don't the Mutos create that balance for people as well? I realize that film isn't called "T-rex", so people may stroke this thought differently. I was just juggling this around in my brain today.

1. JP wasn't called "T-rex Saves the Day in the End of the Movie"

2. JP was about arrogant people playing God and being punished

3. This "Godzilla" was about never existed creatures from never existed time period suddenly appearing and killing each other while dumb ass people trying to destroy them self while trying to destroy something they can't destroy

Why did you edit out the part of my post where I said number 1? :lol And then give answers to questions I didn't really ask?

Hey for me this film represented a start of a new Godzilla and for what it was it was ok...The odds of a sequel maybe being better than this is a good possibility....dont ever mention Jaws or JP as a comparision to anything...nothing will compare just like the first three SW films to the rest...again the like 15 other high school kids that saw this with us loved it...Cranston was the best character to me...this film was also for me a re-testing of the Godzilla waters so to speak, so Im sure feedback of the film will get back and hopefully improve the next one. I still felt more for the G characters than PR. I've met some of these bomb guys in my life...they aint the sort that show emotion... and yeah I saw the film, you gave it a 6/10 so it was a close to pass score even with your complaints
