Finally saw this today. Liked it. Didn't love it. Similar to what many said, it needed more Godzilla and less humans. But man, when the big guy hit the screen, he was awesome. I definitely want the SSC maquette of this.

Decided to revisit Cloverfield.

While the monster vs humanity was effective and there is palpable dread, the monster is shown even less than Godzilla!

Much less!

I like his design... It was different. Very alien (not the movie) to the viewer and not like something we have see before. I said it earlier in this thread... the makers of this new Godzilla must have liked it because the MUTOs look to be second cousins :)

Once revealed, he was stinky. :lol

He's like Gal Gadot the of monsters. :lol

Man did the camera work in CF make me sick. :lol

I love his look Jye... So lay off!!! ;) ;)

About the Camera work... It's funny... In the theater it did not bother me at all but on home video I get a little sick.... Especially when they go in the building that is leaning.. Barf...

In Cloverfield they were hiding it because it's horrible and not in a good way... [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]

I will just point you to my answer to you about this film earlier in this thread :) ;) :)

Yup

Don't get me wrong, the movie still sold the giant monster nastiness very well.

I believed that he would destroy the world if not confronted.

He was also creepy in the sense that he dropped middle earth parasites that would cause you to explode like a puss filled pimple.

I can get why people don't like the design... He is very strange looking.. He is not my fav monster design... Not even close... But I love the tone of the film and feel it is one of the best Giant Monster films out there.

I love the little parasites also :)

But that was the point of Cloverfield?
It was about a mystery creature attack from the ground, Godzilla is about well, Godzilla?

I'm pretty sure the role of the first one was to set up the second.....which never happened

I saw it today, loved it. I completely disagree with this needing more Godzilla. I would rather come out of this film saying I wish there was a little more Godzilla than saying there was too much. Some of the best sci fi/monster movies show the actual beast not that much like Alien and Predator. I think that's the right thing to do with awesome monsters, keep us wanting more. If there wasn't human elements, it would just be a pure monster action film which is prolly what a lot do want, but I don't. I like Godzilla to be a little mysterious and I liked the build up to the end where we saw a lot of him.

I think most would agree with you.

Only problem was that when there were no monsters, the characters were meh.

For the Alien, Predator, Jaws and Close Encounter method to work, great characters are needed.

A forced husband-wife-little kid relationship just won't cut it when utilizing that formula.

So then all your left with is the military struggle, which was at least better then him trying to get back to his wife.

Look at Close Encounters, his obsession, their marriage struggle, then both their journeys was what carried the movie while the alien bits were scattered around until the grand finale.

Cloverfield monster did nothing for me... The deformed ballsack head, the dumb limbs, derpy mouth... Nothing like the MUTOs

That's cool.... Like I said it's not my fav movie monster but the film itself did what only the 1954 Godzilla film has done as far as Giant monster movies go. A serious look and tone at what might happen if a city was devastated by a giant monster and the fear, chaos, and aftermath it would cause.

I still think that the Muto stole the color and body structure of the Cloverfield monster and then gave it a Graboid head... And that is fine. I think the Mutos were a cool looking monsters. However I wished they saved them for the sequel and gave us the Godzilla film the trailers and mag covers promised us.

I think I am going to go see it again this coming Tuesday.... Like I said, I am really hoping I enjoy it more.

Had Cloverfield been filmed with traditional cinematography it would've been a much stronger and respected movie in the giant monster arena.

As it stands now it's a good monster movie held back by an unecessary gimick, even worse than 3D.

They still could've captured the same intensity.

I will somewhat agree with that. I think it started off fine until dad passed (could've been a stronger film if he was kept alive for the whole film), but I think the acting was very good. I really liked Olsen. It's defn not a perfect film, that aspect could be picked at, but overall, it was a great success to me. Can't wait for that SS maquette now.

I am not sure that is the case.... Yes the monster had a back story to the writers (it was a baby) but nothing in the film led us to believe that. The film was successful enough to do a sequel and there was talks of it but because they did not jump on it and do it right away makes me believe that was never the film makers intentions. I think they just set out to make the best film they could make with no thoughts of continuing the story.

I agree about Godzilla's screen time. I thought there was plenty of monster action.. However I tend to agree with the thought process of "Godzilla needed to lose a fight so that the final fight had more drama" Had the film been a little shorter or had better characters I think people would have never thought about Godzilla's screen time.

I think comparing Godzilla to these films is a little bit of an overreach. Only because this is Godzilla's umpteenth time on the screen. We know what he looks like. Hell even the trailers showed us what he looked like as well as Mags and car commercials. The Alien and Predator were kept in secret. They hid them away for suspense reasons (or in the case of Alien the director did not like that it looked like a man in a suit) Not so much a "tease" as they did in Godzilla. Now I am not saying the film needed more... But if other possible Godzilla parts were done well and not just "monster fights" then more Godzilla would have been just fine and not feel like overkill.

Having said that I thought Godzilla looked great when he was on screen as did the Mutos.... I just wish the human element was done better.

Again I think if the Human element was done really well there would be no complaints of "lack of screen time" by Godzilla. Like you said you never heard such complaints films like JAWS, Alien, Predator, and Jurassic Park. But those films had some pretty memorable characters... And lets face it those are all classics of the Genre and Godzilla 2014 is no JAWS, ALIEN, Predator or Jurassic Park.

But perhaps you liked it as much as those films and to that I say... Good for you... I am jealous.

Part of me wanted a Godzilla of the same height but 100% looking like the G2000 or GMK Godzilla. :lol

I wonder if it would be laughed at or taken seriously.

You know, an exact cgi replica of your favorite suit with the same height as G2014.

Jye is wise :lecture:lecture

I understand the hate of the Handheld gimmick... However at the time it was not that overused. I know there was the Blair Witch Project but there were not that many others if any that were released in theaters at the time. Personally I think it added to the film... It's a very basic story that I am not sure would have been done as well if filmed traditionally (not for it's budget) I don't if it could have kept the same intensity and there are some scenes in that film that are made better because of it.

I still like the Handheld gimmick better then 3D. :)
