Re: Legendary Pictures' GODZILLA - May 16, 2014
I feel like the only monster who gave Godzilla a true beating was the first Mechagodzilla. He really got his *** kicked to the point where he needed help and even that almost wasnt enough. It also shows that it takes alot to take godzilla down.
Yup, as much as they tried to make each villain a challenge, in the history of Godzilla, I consider Ghidorah and Mechagodzilla 1 his greatest foes.
Hopefully the new movie will be king of Godzilla movies.
While some may never want to rank it high in the franchise because it's not Toho and it's CGI instead of a suit, I honestly think for stortelling and everything that this will easily make my top 5 Godzilla films, I genuinely believe from storytelling to cinematography, this will be the best Godzilla since Gojira.
I really hope so, been a long time since a really great monster movie.
Any mention of additional monsters?
Yea they are called the Muto. Which people think is desastroya or smog monster. Apparently Muto can fly and has multiple forms. Also there is a battle damage godzilla figure so It looks like Muto will be a strong opponent. I really wonder how this movie will play out. Will godzilla be a hero in the end or a villain.
I find it very unlikely that they are bringing back any other Toho monsters in this one. I don't think they will even try to go that route for this film.
It's been confirmed that, at the very least in name, no creature beyond Godzilla will be a reference to a Toho kaiju. The Hedora rumors as far as I can tell only came from Godzillamovies.com which is a very unreliable site, and the Destroyah rumors are just based on there being multiple mutos, and there's no confirmation if it's one species that evolves in form or if it's multiple creatures, one multi-legged on land and one flying.
I guarantee if this film does huge numbers they will bring in Ghidorah. that's a given.
As much as fans would probably enjoy kaiju from the Godzilla franchise showing up in this series, I think some of them would be hard to pull off believably with the direction Legendary has gone in. Godzilla and the mutos are mutations brought about by mankind's manipulation of nature. Giant lizards and insect-like creatures make sense, but a winged, three headed creature might be stretching it, and if the design, to be believable, is too much of a departure from the past, fans won't accept it. I think the safest route would be to continue creating their own kaiju, though something like Megalon could be done as that monster is very insect-based. Even Gigan's design could be an interpretation of existing creatures.
Edwards has stated though, if given a chance to do a sequel, he'd love to tackle something as grand as Destroy All Monsters, which means we could see a large variety of creatures.
Wait, as my only knowledge of Godzilla is G98 I'm kinda lost here, will this new movie be Godzilla kicking buildings over and just outright annoying humanity or will it be Godzilla beating on some other monster and leaving collateral?
It's actually going to be a bit of both. To get an idea of this movie, you could watch Godzilla vs Mothra (1964) or any Heisei Godzilla movie from '89 to '95. Those are Godzilla vs films which feature a balance of Godzilla on his own destroying cities and fighting other monsters. I believe this is the route Legendary is taking. There will be other monsters Godzilla and humanity deals with, but at the same time, I think Godizlla will be the greatest threat to humanity among them and there will be moments of humans dealing with just him. I imagine the big scene in San Francisco from the trailer could strictly be the army vs Godzilla.
Speaking of San Fran, I was looking at a high res copy of the recent poster, and while it can easily be Photoshop flames added to an aerial shot of the city, I wonder if it's indicative of Godzilla's destructive path as it leads a trail.
