We tried everything. We could get English subtitles to come on, but it was still dubbed into English.... and I wasn't about to watch it with no sound whatsoever :lol

Gottcha, I don't think there was a menu option on the bluray. But I just kept hitting the audio button until I couldn't understand them. :lol

If you have an xbox and netflix you can watch it on LIVE for free with subtitles.

I always watch dubbed the first time through. Blasphemy, I know, but it's easier to see what's on the screen that way. After the first run, it's subs only, unless I'm inebriated :monkey3

I watched this the other day - enjoyed it, but didn't think that it was as amazing as everyone seems to be making out in the press...

Another good flick in the Six Shooter set is "Time Crimes", a french time travel movie. Think Primer without the migraine after you watch it.

Yeah, saw the trailer for that one and thought it looked pretty good. Will have to give it a try!

And as for XBox and Netflix and watching it free with subtitles... we use Blockbuster Online now (used to have Netflix, but BO is a much better deal - and you get to switch out in the store a few times a month if you just can't wait for delivery).

That one is currently sitting on my nightstand at home waiting to get watched. I've heard good things about it. Nice to hear another freak is endorsing it as worth a watch.

Very interesting movie. I liked it, but the most horrifying aspect:
was the "nude" scene of the 12 year old girl/boy. Thankfully, I read in an interview with the director that it was actually a doll used for filming AND it was supposed to show that the girl was actually a castrated boy...which they didnt really touch on in the movie but apparently is explained in the book.

Okay, I never understood that shot - now it makes a lot of sense (and makes the whole movie much creepier). It's too bad the filmmaker couldn't convey that information better.

And I wasn't as impressed as everyone with the film either - but I did see it with the supposedly really bad DVD subtitles.

However the end scene at the pool I thought was very creepy and cool.

This is still why I think it would have been a good idea to have included the scenes of Eli's back story reveal in the film. It would have added maybe 15 more minutes to the film. Eli's origins are shown to Oskar when they kiss, quick flashes would have worked just fine to get the point across. Instead non-readers are left with :confused:when they watch the movie.

Actually my wife figured it out when we saw it...
I think it's more interesting to leave things open to interpretation.
But she said, it's a boy not a girl, and that Hakan (Eli's guardian) wasn't her father at all, he was like Eli, but grew old...

Well, I'm sure there is the exception here and there of non-readers figuring out Eli but the overall sentiment I've heard are from those that had no idea. Plus, there's the story of what happened to Eli that is quite interesting but alas left out. A whole story about Hakam was left out as well (which I was let down about while watching the film).

Alex, you are definitely making me want to read this book!

I haven't had a chance to see this yet, but I have been keeping up with the subtitle debacle. I decided not to wait on Magnolia to release a better version of the movie. I ordered the Swedish release of the Blu-Ray/DVD from Megastore. It is supposed to be region free, and has the correct english subtitles. Plus it has the cool Swedish language cover title "Låt Den Rätte Komma In"

I think that Hakan has been her Renfield rather than her father is pretty obvious, but I don't see how you could get that Eli is a castrated boy from just seeing the movie. But I wasn't watching THAT closely.

It would take a lot of assuming but isn't terribly hard to figure out if you just listen to Eli constantly saying "I'm not a girl" and then seeing the clothes changing scene. They could have used more backstory, but I'm not 100% convinced that the director didn't intentionally take creative license with Hakan and Eli's characters.
