Horizon Zero Dawn is the best selling PS4 game ever. It sold over 20 million copies, edging out God of War and The Last of Us Part II as the best selling PS4 game. Forbidden West didn't perform as well, but franchise sales are over 30 million units and there's talk of TV show spin offs and additional games coming. There's already been a VR game and a Lego game as well.

Zero Dawn alone has outsold Rise and Shadow of the Tomb Raider combined, so yes, Horizon is absolutely as popular, if not more popular than Tomb Raider these days.
Not trying to say it isn’t a popular game. It very much is.

But I think the main reason why HZD sold so many copies is because I remember the price going from $60 to $20 after only a year since release. And it was completely free for all Playstation users a few years ago for a few months. I recall because that’s how I got the game. Another factor is that it was one of the first PS4 exclusive to have a PC port and I think that generated new hype around it. Because of the great graphics I think a portion of players played this game to test out their machines capabilities, because it was cheap or free. And it was a pretty good overall game.

So despite being a good game, with great graphics. The franchise doesn’t nearly have the strongest fanbase that other games have that have sold less. And the die hard fans are the people who are gonna buy merch like statues and figures at the end of the day. I know its not exactly an accurate metric but if we look at reddit community numbers, Horizon has only 60k members on their reddit. While the last of us has 2 million and god of war has 1 million. Now those franchises have existed for well over a decade so maybe not a fair comparison, okay let’s compare to a failed playstation exclusive, days gone that was released around the same time. Even the game Sony considers a fail has 114k members.

Personally, I found Horizon boring. The acting in the cutscenes was very stoic. Especially in those dialogue option scenes where characters just stand still with their mouth just opening and closing. Really took me out of it. The world mostly being filled with the same few enemies. I played around 20h before giving it a rest.

I really wanted to like it, because the game is by a Dutch developer. And I am Dutch. We really don’t have a gaming industry here, like at all. So this game being as massive as it is is really something unique for our country. Aloys face is also based on a Dutch model. And she’s voiced by Ashley Burch of course who I’m a huge fan of because of her work in several other games. But despite all this, I could personally not get into it.

The open world was so boring, its packed with enemies so you can't walk two feet without getting roped into a fight when you're just trying to get around. And if you do get into a fight with enemies, about ten more enemies of different kinds immediately spawn, so every fight escalates into 15 v 1 and takes so much longer

Agreed, imo horizon isn’t that popular and I haven’t seen it connect with people. The amount of horizon games isn’t due to popularity, PlayStation is pushing Horizon hard because it’s one of its few current IPs that they can market to younger audiences that’s why the Lego game is a thing.

Also doesn't help that the sequel released a week before elden ring and the later just took the hype away for all of 2022

You don't hear many people talk about how much they love Horizon, despite the sales. In contrast you always hear people talk about how much they love God of War, the Last of Us, Uncharted, and other PlayStation IPs.
Don’t forget bloodborne!

But exactly. I don’t know anyone in my circle that likes horizon and would be excited for a sequel. It’s not a bad game but definitely the weakest of the PlayStation IP’s so the fact they are really pushing it is a little baffling.

Elden Ring is massive but I don’t see it doing too much damage to horizon I just think the hype wasn’t there to begin with.

Thats a bad sign. No talk means no merch sales.

This hobby is such a cesspool of negativity.

No one said Horizon isn’t without its problems. Zero Dawn has a brilliant story, incredible lore and breathtaking environments. But it’s absolutely plagued by some janky animations and lackluster open world.

You know what else has a woefully boring open world? With literally nothing of interest in between POIs? Ghost of Tsushima, and people talk about how that’s one of the greatest games of the generation - because of the brilliant story, interesting lore breathtaking environments. Same reasons people like Horizon.

That fixed all the issues in Zero Dawn when they released Forbidden West and the story took a hit as a result, it happens. It’s not a perfect franchise and no one ever pretended it was - that doesn’t change that it’s popular.

A guy with industry insights comes here and drops some knowledge and a reveal about a character a bunch of people want and you guys just want to hijack all that to complain. And then you all wonder why companies don’t interact with the community anymore.

Good lord.

So Horizon sold so well because…lots of people bought it. Glad we figured that out.
Not denying it sold well, just questioning its popularity and how many of those sales was at full price.

Despite selling well, days gone is not getting a sequel because most of those sales was on a deep discount or free on ps plus.

Sales numbers aren’t everything

Horizon hate is one of the most forced things ever.

It's probably the most unique new IP PlayStation has had in a long time, with beautifully rendered open worlds in the Decima engine and really cool looking character and enemy designs. I also really love the combat and exploration, especially in Forbidden West. Most of the complaints people have about the games can be applied to pretty much every other game people like to praise, as @RandomHero pointed out. Ghost of Tsushima, Witcher 3, Days Gone, they all suffer from the same issues Horizon has. Hell, the Spider-Man games probably have the most boring open worlds out of any PlayStation open world game, with the same repeated free-roam events and lifeless NPCs at every corner, yet people enjoy those games for the same people enjoy Horizon, fun exploration and combat, cool designs and engaging characters and stories.

Whether or not your friends talk about Horizon, like or dislike it, has no bearing on how well a 1/6 scale Aloy figure will sell, in the same vein, sales and player count or the number of people active in fan communities isn't indicative of the success of a 1/6 scale figure either. Wasn't Palworld the game with the highest player count on Steam, ever? You know how much people I've seen asking for figures from that in collector communities? Zero. But I have seen numerous requests for an Aloy figure across several 1/6 scale collector hubs over the years.

Let's use Elden Ring as an example too, since it was already mentioned here. It's probably the most praised game ever, with a huge player count and active online communities. It has a new stand-alone coming out next year that is coming hot on the heels of the DLC that was nominated for GOTY this year. Guess how well all of the 1/6 scale figures from that game have sold? Not well, at all. Every brand that has attempted to make 1/6 scale figures from that game knows that, VTS didn't even announce the Blaidd figure because they knew from researching the market and collector feedback that it wouldn't sell.

The numerous requests for an Aloy figure over the years are what ultimately pushed LIM and Master Team to make her, not game sales or what people who don't collect figures think of Aloy or the games. I believe that whenever she's announced, she'll look so incredibly cool that even people who don't care much about the games might find it hard to resist.

Sales numbers aren’t everything
Who the actual **** cares how the sales were made? Do companies not factor in Black Friday sales to their bottom line because everything sold that weekend wasn't at full price? Do they discredit whatever other sales were held during the year, because things weren't sold at full price? That's a completely nonsensical statement.

And Days Gone is the worst example you could have used in comparison to Horizon. Another game with an absolutely empty open world and lack of engaging content outside of the main story. You do the same things over and over until you lose interest in doing it. And unlike Horizon, there's absolutely zero incentive to explore anything because there's no lore or backstory, whereas the majority of the intrigue in Horizon is slowly unraveling what happened to the world and hearing all the stories of the people who fought to the very end in the apocalypse.

Horizon moved units, a ton of people play the game, there's always a few Aloy cosplayers at NYCC every year since Zero Dawn came out, there's been content outside of the two games and more content on the way. Is Horizon as popular as Red Dead or The Last of Us or Uncharted or the Jedi series? Of course not. Is it popular? Absolutely, and questioning that is just plain silly.

It's so incredibly amusing how everyone wants open world games now, but then everyone complains that the world is boring. I don't know when exactly it became a problem - obviously Ocarina of Time was the first "true" open world game - there's literally nothing to do in between POIs except randomly get attacked. Maybe it was too new a concept and no one cared. But I remember back in 2007 when the original Assassin's Creed came out, people were marveling at the vastness of the open world, how much there was to explore and climb and see. Now, people look back and complain about the game hasn't aged well, it's boring and repetitive - when at the time AC performed well enough to make the launch of Assassin's Creed 2 one of the most hyped of all time - complete with a half hour TV special on the Spike TV channel (RIP) called Lineage.

I think Rockstar kind of ruined open worlds - everyone is so used to doing whatever the hell they want, however the hell they want in GTA and Red Dead that they expect that to be the standard now. But there's only one Rockstar, they're the pinnacle of studios for a reason. Everything else, like you said, is the same limited engagement and lifeless NPCs - and for good reason. Look how long the development cycle is for games these days. If every studio put the effort in that Rockstar does, you'd go ten years between releases. Who wants that? We're not here forever. And we only have less free time as we go deeper into adult life.

I remember a time where a Nathan Drake figure from Lim was written off as not feasible. I don't hang out on other 1/6 boards but I remember the more Nate got talked about here, the more traction it seemed to gain. Then all of a sudden, it got the green light. And we saw prototypes and sculpts and it went up for pre-order. And it sold well enough that suddenly we were talking about whether or not a Sully figure was a realistic expectation. Just like Arthur sold well enough that John is looming and Dutch is in development. And that's because people spoke up about wanting Dutch.

At the end of the day, there's been enough people that want Aloy that it's worthwhile to for you guys to explore making her. She's a compelling protagonist from a memorable game, in a cool looking outfit with a cool weapon and the ability to make cool accessories. What's not to like? But of course, you guys are the experts and you're checked in enough to see what it is that's being requested, much more so than the lemmings who just complain online about things.

The sales was mentioned on here as an indicator of its success and not original brought up by me. I just highlighted how sales figures alone doesn’t give the full picture of its popularity.

Coincidentally I agree with you about days gones open world, and I did not speak to the quality of horizon… so yes Days Gone is the perfect example to indicate how high sales doesn’t always mean a successful or popular game, Days gone underperformed because most sales came on discount or ps plus.

Are there horizon fans sure, as an outsider looking in, is it popular?? Personally I don’t see the hype or excitement. Very rarely do I come across anyone gently excited about horizon.

I’m glad you enjoyed Horizon and hope you get your Aloy figure.

I thought a discussion forum was for discussion? Why is everything seen as negativity nowadays. I havent seen one negative word said here. Just people who play ps exclusives sharing their opinions.

I wasn't even asking for an Aloy figure. I've been out here asking for a Chloe Frazier figure for YEARS lol. I'll buy Aloy I enjoyed the character very much, but she's behind Chloe, Elena Fisher, Sadie Adler, Ellie and even Dina from TLOU, and Merrin from the Jedi games in terms of my female video game character wishlist.

Sales absolutely doesn't give the full picture - I agree with you. Look at Avatar. #1 movie box office of all time, billions of dollars in tickets sold worldwide. Have you ever talked to anyone in real life about that movie? Or heard anyone talk about it? Gone to a convention and seen a single cosplayer? Seen anything but the bare minimum of merch? The answer is no, you haven't.

Meanwhile, you've got something like Starship Troopers which barely broke even at the box office but has become a cult classic. There's a new game that just came out, those actors are doing every convention known to man right now, even VTS made a few 1/6 figures. Just the first thing that came to me for an example.

Regardless of how it sold, it's still the best selling game of the last PlayStation generation. Just like how Avengers Endgame and Avatar re-released their way into being the #1 movie of all time, they can still claim they were number one at the box office. Re-release or not, they got there. Horizon sold a ton of copies and even if it was on sale or PC or whatever, the game was a huge success.

I don’t think Elden Ring is a fair comparison.

A named well established main character like Aloy will get tons more requests and perform better than “default marketing armour guy” or random “NPC’s”

Elden Ring having Fully customisable characters, different starting classes, freedom with weapons builds and lots of armour sets to choose from and mix and match makes everyone’s desired Elden Ring figures vary drastically.

Bloodborne is my favourite IP, I’d lose my mind for Lady Maria, but the “default” hunter guy is an easy pass.

Guy from Lim: “hey I know a lot of people wanted Aloy so I can reveal we’re working on Aloy since we’re talking about female bodies for figure.”

People here in response: boring open world! No talk about the franchise! No merch! Too many enemies! Animations took me out of it!

Yup, that’s a perfectly reasonable way to respond to breaking news in what was an insightful conversation. In an Uncharted thread.

You must be fun at parties.

We have discussions like this in the Resident Evil thread every. Single. Day. For years on end. And nobody ever takes it personally. It’s almost like we discuss things here we can’t discuss with people in real life because they don’t share the interest.
