LOVED IT!!!

I have always had mixed emotions about Ben. After tonight I LOVED his character! It was neat to see him become the better man in both the alternate reality and the actual. (we will see if it sticks. I can see him sacrificing himself somewhere along the line).

I did NOT like seeing Richard so upset!!! I have always felt "safe" when he was around and now he seems just as confused as the rest of them.

So far, I am TEAM JACOB. Jack, Sun, Miles, Ben, Richard, Hurley!

Am bummed that I will be missing next weeks episode due to a work trip. Will have to catch it next Friday!!! :(

Great to see they are keeping the Widmore story going... I was a little afraid they would drop it!

Ben has been my favorite character for a long time. It was great to see him develop so much this episode. He used to just be a great villain, but he has slowly ban becoming a sympathetic character. He really blossomed in that regard this week.

So alternate reality/timeline Ben was a member of Dharma (or at least his father was) and had been on the island.

I think this is a very very important point... I have yet to work out all the implications...

Submarine. Oh, wait... :lol

Apparently. :lol

Widdy is gonna bring the pain. And I agree this was a great Ben ep. Now he's got to redeem himself somehow. Killing Widmore sounds like a good start. :lol

And we are creeping closer to the Black Rock/Richard ep. Should be a big one.

I loved the choices that Ben made in this episode. I was expecting him to shoot Ilana in the back and run, and seeing him return to the beach and help Sun with the tarp was a high point in the growth of his character. (I was slightly creeped out by the Ben/Alex scenes in the alternate reality--it made me a little nervous as to where they were heading with that relationship.)

Randomly: I was extremely happy to see Widmore in that sub, and I hope that somehow Desmond is in the galley making a sandwich. (My wife thinks Widmore is coming to give MIB a ride, and I think he might be coming to protect the Island. We shall see...) I actually enjoyed the Nikki/Paolo reference. I have been slightly distressed about where they have been taking Richard's character--he always felt like such a cool, calm guy who knows everything and that has been changing. Roger Linus' Dharma references were intriguing. Now we know why Lapidus wasn't on 815, and why Richard doesn't age. The implications of Jacob's touch are very interesting for the other six. (Now it makes more sense why Jack was unable to kill himself back when he was in his funk.) I caught the fact that one of the candidates will be elected. Elected by who? They have been playing with the ideas of predestination/election vs. free will and I am quite interested in seeing where things end up. It was great seeing Team Jacob all together and united on the beach--this was a great episode that moved things forward another step closer to the finale.

Nah, they were just showing that in that reality he chose to save Alex rather than let her die. Another way for him to be redeemed.

Me too. It was a small reference, but it at least helped justify that episode a little. And the diamonds may come up again.

...are we to assume that Miles actually dug up there graves to get at those diamonds... seems like someone there would have objected to that. :dunno

That was important, it shows that the island didn't sink to the bottom of the ocean when jack blew up the nuke (or did it.....?); was it a alternate reality before that too? Since Ben was on the island and was shot BEFORE jack blew up the bomb, how can Ben NOT have been on the island....hurts my brain.

On a side note, I'm wondering where Jacob "touched" Richard? Was it a naughty place????

This last ep really highlighted why TV can be such a great storytelling medium. Few places outside of a novel can devote such time and attention to a second tier player or character actor like Michael Emerson. The leads like Luke and Leia are the anchors of the 'big story' and rightly get the lion's share of scenes, but I find it fascinating when a Peter Lore-esque side character gets the focus and can shine in his own story. Episodic TV has the luxury to do that in a way movies never can.

I think my brain will melt if the sub docks and out walks friendly, helpful Widmore from the alternate timeline.

I'm sure they have some sort of major reveal planned that will connect the two halves of the show this season. I am getting more and more into the flashes with each passing week, even without a clear idea of what's actually going on.

The mirror scene this week was Ben's reflection in the microwave. I'm having fun finding those.

I'm still not digging the alternate reality. It just feels to gimmicky, they are really going to have to have a good explanation behind it all. I don't think fate is going to cut it for me.

I agree that Ben's father's revelation that they were on the island at one time was very interesting and revealing. Unless of course its a red herring and Dharma was on a different island...

I liked the wink wink nudge nudge when Ben hooked up his dad's oxygen tank, like "Hey look, in this reality he's SAVING his dad with gas"

I don't know how they are going to merge them (though I have a guess) but I'm sure it wont' be that. ^^^

I hadn't noticed that. Is this a thing?

I'll have to look for it in future episodes.

.

Well, it can't be, because the alt timeline should still be in the past, if it takes place after the plane landed it seems like it would only be a few weeks after at most. . . or did we jump time and I just didn't notice??

I don't think the alt timeline and island timeline are happening at the same time.

Time. Timetimetime time. . . . .time.

. . wait a minute, do you think 24 and Lost are going to crossover?? Lost has too much time, and 24 is always running out of. . . TIME!!!!

Well, yes it seems that the flash sideways is 4 years in the past, but in theory this Widmore could be a flash sideways person, but that would imply that there are 2 of him in 2007 and probably 2 of everyone (that hasn't died yet, like Dogen)...

Really don't think that's were they're going. However I do have a theory that for the 2 realities to merge one of every character will have to die.

My other theory (actually it's not mine, but I like it) is that the flash sideways is like an epilogue to our characters lives. Once the events of the final episode are finished we will realize that this is what happened to them next. This would mean that the reset was not blowing up Jughead, but something that will happen in that last episode. And maybe "reset" is the wrong word. Perhaps the flash sideways was the reality that was always supposed to happen without the meddling of Jacob and Man in black. In other words the seasons we have watched up until now have been the deviation, and the flash sideways is the reality that was always meant to be, and finally will be after the events of the finale.

What do you think?

That second theory is a rewording of a listener theory I heard on the "Transmission Podcast". Has anyone checked it out yet? It is really really good.

I have come across several versions of this theory--that the "sideways flashes" are the epilogue.

I was toying with that very idea on 2/3/10:

They obviously have to tie the alt story into the one we've been following for five years--I'm just trying to figure out how that's going to happen... I'm hoping that the alt story actually takes place after the events we are currently watching unfold on the island, and the alt flashes are actually showing us the end of the series.... Death and sacrifice on the island in the finale will be rewarded with a happily ever after future in the restored alternate timeline (which you might even view as the original timeline before Jacob/MIB/Widmore/Richard started meddling with everyone's lives).
