Also loved it. I know some wont like the Christian allegory, but I thought it was great!

Well, Isabella framed it as hell as per her beliefs but as Jacob pointed out, and the Egyptian imagery suggests, the darkness transcends one religion. Still, the Jacob/MiB set up does have a distinct Book of Job flavor, which is fine as that story has some nice convergence of heady philosophical & moral & dramatic ____.

The episode was excellent! :rock

I dug the campfire spook tale intro and how they folded in the Ilana backstory. Once the Richard tale kicked in it was brilliant and brought a cinematic production value you rarely see on tv shows. From the horse gallop intro to jail cell "you're ____ed" scene to the Black Rock it was wonderful stuff. They certainly delivered on the epic-ness in both content and style. :chew

Yeah, it really did play like a movie!

Have we ever had a flashback take up that long of a continuous chunk before?

Yeah, I don't think they are going down any one religious path but the conversation between Jacob and Richard (The "Book of Job" conversation) is pretty explicit Christian allegory, with the question of free will. And the question of why Jacob (God) doesn't get involved. He want's them to make the right choice on their own. Thought it was great when Richard said 'If you don't get involved, He (MiB) will.'

In Revelation it says that the Devil has been let loose upon the earth thus getting very much involved in world events. MiB is not afraid to get involved in island events, and (according to Jacob) he would love to be let loose upon the world.

Very interesting. I'm also glad to see they explained why they can't just let MiB leave the island.

So if the island is the cork that holds the darkness 'in the bottle', does that mean that the flash-sideways are in a world where MiB is loose, since the island has sunk (the cork is gone)?

And another idea I had:

Some weeks ago I read that soon we'd be given in a 4-letter word in the series that would explain what the island is and that word would be a good way to connect the island-story and the flash-sideways.
What if that word was 'cork'? Maybe that could mean that sometime in the coming episodes, MiB finds a way of the island (i.e. blowing the cork), making the island sink in the process. That event restarts the timeline to the point the losties never crashed etc. (what we saw in the first flash-sideways of this season) So that would mean the flash-sideways happen chronologically after the present island-episodes, and could be about the losties rediscovering who they are and finding a way to stop the MiB who is now of the island? Or is that too far fetched? :lol

Outstanding episode! One of the best of the entire series, and I've been a die-hard LOST fan since the pilot episode. So, then, are they saying that Jacob is God and the "Man In Black" is the devil aka Satan? Now that the "MIB" has taken the form of John Locke...he must be kept on the island.

The focus on Richard's story was awesome. I agree it was definitely a "movie quality" episode. :D

Jacob is definately not God because he can be/will be/has been replaced.

I see the MiB as infinite but Jacob is simply a pawn.

And it was interesting in last night's episode to see so much emotion from Jacob. He wasn't the nicest guy before Ricardo showed up.

EDIT: And if you didn't shed a tear at the reunion scene at the end then you aren't human.

Shropt, I was about to post the very same thing! I was absolutely amazed at the acting in last night's episode, and Nestor's performance made me truly believe his love for Isabella... and the "reunion" at the end... one of the most heart-felt moments in the entire series of LOST! Bravo!

I had to work last night, so didn't catch the episode. But just watched it now on abc.com and wow, what an episode! And to Shropt and Lonnie, I guess I am human! :lol:D
Richard reuniting with his wife at the end was just...so emotional I can't describe.

I agree that Jacob is not God.

As far as MiB being "infinite"-- Didn't he say that he was 'once a man'?

I most certainly did not because I really don't care about Richard. I mean I like his character and I really liked last nights episode but come on...besides this episode we really ever see Richard and could never connect with him like the other characters cause he is such a small time character. So the whole reunion piece I was like...this is nice and all but in the end who gives a ____. Just being honest.

But that's just it... his acting was so good last night, I finally felt something for his character and his relationship with his wife!

You are heartless man... heartless! :D

Haha apparently. I agree his acting definitely stood out last night but I just didn't care much. Now if he goes off trying to off MiB that will make it a little more interesting but I am taking that as right now he just going to join Jacob.

He was once a man, lost someone he loved, was betrayed and had a crazy mother who's craziness caused him... "growing pains", problems he's still working through that he says could have been avoided.

You are heartless man... heartless! :D

I know there are those who only care about the Big Story and find all the rest boring filler. That's ok too, and that story keeps everything moving along but that's not really what is central to the show. I feel you miss quite a lot if that is your only focus.

Which in the end is my problem with the show, which I know is just me personally so I don't dis on anyone for thinking otherwise. I am more about the island lore and overall story then the characters. Most of the characters I don't care about anymore or never did. To me it is all about Jacob and MiB and the island.

Well I wouldn't have put it quite like that... but no I didn't cry either.

To be honest I was kind of distracted by this thought in my head:

Seriously. Am I the only one that thought Hurley had turned into Oda Mae Brown? Although I loved Richard in this episode I just thought the Ghost scene was a bit smarmy.

Sorry. I'm glad it moved most of you though! :)

:rotfl:rotfl

I didn't think about that, nice one.
