But the writers addressed this in the opening dialogue of the episode. The island mother told the real mother, "for every question I answer you are just going to have more questions... so stop asking questions." This line made me smile... I felt that the writers were trying to say that some things we are just going to have to accept.

The fact that they have to write it to address that there will always be questions speaks to a larger problem. . . .why does EVERYTHING have to be explained?? What other show has such an entitlement issue that the audience needs to know what so and so was doing before we saw them doing such and such and why they were doing it??

Lots of good ideas in this thread, my thoughts are closest to Crawfords. Cuse and Lindelof gave an interview today https://www.hitfix.com/blogs/whats-alan-watching/posts/exclusive-interview-lost-producers-damon-lindelof-and-carlton-cuse-talk-across-the-sea. I got out of it that MIB is definitely smokey and the "Light" that was the bright part of humanity that was part of the island is now part of smokey/MiB and if he leaves the island then mankind will sink into evil and barbarism. But Jacob is culpable because he killed his brother and sent him into the light - thereby making the Light transportable.

They also said that they wanted to get all the mythology out of the way so the finale can concentrate on the characters. Aside from the learning about the 2 timelines and the ultimate fate of who replaces Jacob I think we've gotten all the answers we're going to get.

Overall I was originally disappointed with the episode. It seemed that a lot of that exposition could have come with our main characters and we don't need a full episode devoted to it. But after Lindacuse said that they just wanted to blow through the mythology, I guess it makes sense.

Sounds like the same thing that happened with BSG. They "accidentally" crafted this grand mythology, but all they really wanted to do was tell a story about the characters. Ron Moore drops a line about the missing cylon, Daniel, and then ignores it, because it's not important. Fans are outraged.

I don't think, at this point, the fans care about who ends up the next Jacob, they want to know what the island is, and what the smoke monster is, how Dharma got started, why there is this electromagnetism, why is Walt special, why is Desmond special?? What are we going to get in the next 2 and a half hours, fighting over who gets to stay on the island.

:slap

:huh It's the same mold as The Dark Tower or The Stand, a focus less on the plotty bits and genre entrapments and more about the personal journeys within that grander story.

^^^^^
These have been answered. (At least why Dharma got started. How doesn't matter)

...why there is this electromagnetism, why is Walt special, why is Desmond special??

^^^^^
I don't need why's for these. They just are.

I will say that there are things that I want answered. But as has been mentioned, I think a lot of those things have been, and we wont be able to figure them out until we re-watch.

Okay, I have a theory for how the series will end.

It's just a theory, but I'm gonna put it in spoiler tags, not because I think so highly of my theory that it has to be right, but because if it is right it will spoil a really amazing moment.

I think that In the finale episode The Locke from the sideways universe will have his consciousness shifted in to the body that MiB is using. He will take control of the body which is still holding the smoke monster/light of the island. He will go into the heart/eye of the island thus returning the light and in the process sacrificing himself. (Remember how Locke saw Smokey and he said he looked into the eye of the island and it was beautiful?). Jack will be left to be the new guardian of the island, much like Jacob's "mother" was. And he will not have to serve as a jailer. It would be nice if he could have some company, so I will throw in that I predict that Kate will stay with him... not sure how that would work though.

If you read it, let me know what you think. :)

This makes a lot of sense and would a poetic and appropriate ending. And as we've seen from BSG and it seems to be a LOSTatude that "everything is bound to repeat".

Last night was the "Lost Live" event with a live orchestral performance, cast appearances and a viewing of Tuesday's episode. I'm sad that I couldn't go, but they are selling the remaining prints and shirts unveiled last night right here:

Got this for my wife:

And if anybody was following the poster series last fall, there will be eight more coming to finish it off.

too bad the posters and t's all look 'meh' at best.

And Lost eclipsed BSG's first 2 good seasons long ago and I'm pretty sure their ending won't be the messy dreck poor BSG served up.
